December 11, 2024 brought two different first-person experiences to Fortnite: Ballistic entered Early Access as a playable 5v5 mode, and Epic’s First Person Camera device entered Beta for creator-made islands. It was not a universal first-person toggle for Battle Royale. Which route you use depends on whether you want to play Ballistic or find a Creative island built with the camera device.
What arrived on December 11, 2024?
The date covered both a player-facing mode and a creator tool. Epic first announced its First Person Camera Mode device for Creative and UEFN on October 1, 2024, as an experimental feature. On November 12, Epic said the device would enter Beta on December 11, allowing creators to submit islands for content review through the Creator Portal. Epic’s December 10 ecosystem note confirmed that publishing with the device would unlock the following day. Separately, Epic announced Ballistic on December 7 for an Early Access launch on December 11.

These were related but separate releases: Ballistic was a ready-to-play mode, while the camera device let creators build their own first-person islands. Epic Support describes first-person access through Ballistic or Creative modes that use the First Person Camera device—not through a general Battle Royale setting. Epic Support: How do I play in first-person game mode in Fortnite?
Choose between Ballistic and creator-made islands
| Route | What you do | Experience |
|---|---|---|
| Ballistic | Play an Epic-made mode | At launch, a no-build, round-based competitive 5v5 mode |
| Creative or UEFN island with the First Person Camera device | Find and play an island created by someone else | Creator-designed gameplay using a first-person camera |
Ballistic: a competitive mode to play
Ballistic divides players into attackers and defenders. Attackers try to plant a Rift Point Device at one of two sites; defenders try to stop them. Epic’s launch announcement described Skyline 10 as the initial map, alongside a starting selection of weapons and a limited number of items. Those details describe the Early Access launch, not a guarantee about the mode’s current map or item lineup. Epic said more maps, weapons, and features were planned for later updates. To adjust first-person reticle feedback in Ballistic, open the mode’s Settings, select the Game UI tab, and turn on “Show Spread (First Person)” and/or “Show Recoil (First Person).” These options display feedback; they are not a setting for enabling first-person play across Fortnite. Creative and UEFN: creator-designed islands
The First Person Camera device gives island creators a way to make experiences rendered from the player character’s viewpoint. During its December 2024 Beta, creators could submit islands using the device through the Creator Portal for content review. Epic required those islands to follow Fortnite Island Creator rules and Fortnite’s age rating. The device was announced as experimental, and Epic warned that experimental assets were not guaranteed to remain backward-compatible and that APIs could change or be removed. Was first-person added to Battle Royale?
The December 11 announcements do not establish a general first-person option for Battle Royale. Epic Support points players to Ballistic or Creative modes using the camera device. In practice, look for Ballistic if you want Epic’s competitive first-person mode, or choose a Creative island that uses the device for another kind of experience. A first-person camera in one island does not mean every Fortnite mode uses that perspective.
What limitations did Epic document for the creator camera?
Epic’s October 2024 experimental announcement described limitations at that stage, and said that some would continue into Beta. They should be read as dated notes from the experimental and Beta period—not as confirmation that every issue remains in 2026.

- Choose Ballistic for a packaged, competitive 5v5 experience with attacker and defender rounds.
- Choose a Creative island if you want a creator-designed experience that uses the First Person Camera device; the gameplay depends on the island.
- If you build islands, the device is the relevant tool, subject to Epic’s publishing review and creator rules.
Epic has not identified special hardware as a requirement for either route in the cited announcements or support guidance.
