Fortnite Has Used Unreal Engine 5 for Years—What Players Can Expect

Fortnite’s UE5 transition is years old, but its visual features and performance trade-offs still depend on platform, mode, settings and hardware.

Fortnite did not just move to Unreal Engine 5. Epic’s major public milestone for Battle Royale was Chapter 4, powered by Unreal Engine 5.1, on December 4, 2022. What players see from UE5 still depends on the mode, platform, graphics settings and hardware: the upgrade brought richer geometry, lighting, shadows and image reconstruction, not a universal performance boost or identical features everywhere.

That distinction matters because Fortnite is a live service, not a single graphics switch. Epic has continued adding technology to different parts of the game, but its public materials do not establish one UE5 revision shared by every Fortnite experience today.

When did Fortnite move to Unreal Engine 5?

Epic’s Chapter 4 announcement on December 4, 2022 described Fortnite Battle Royale as powered by Unreal Engine 5.1 and introduced Nanite, Lumen, Virtual Shadow Maps and Temporal Super Resolution. Epic had begun introducing UE5 technology earlier, but the Chapter 4 launch was the clear public-facing milestone. Calling the transition new in 2026 is misleading. Epic’s Chapter 4 announcement

Nor does “Fortnite uses UE5” mean every subsystem, mode or platform runs the same features. Epic can integrate technology incrementally, and the engine version number alone does not tell you which rendering features are enabled in a particular experience.

What changed visually?

Nanite: more detailed geometry

Nanite virtualized geometry lets supported environments display highly detailed models, including architectural surfaces such as bricks, stones, planks and trim, as well as natural objects. The practical aim is denser geometric detail and fewer obvious level-of-detail transitions in some situations. It does not make every object infinitely detailed, upgrade every texture or guarantee higher frame rates. Its impact depends on the asset, distance, platform and rendering mode. Epic’s explanation of Fortnite’s UE5.1 features

Lumen: lighting and reflections that respond to the scene

Lumen is Epic’s dynamic global illumination and reflection system. Light can bounce through a space, so interiors, shaded areas and reflective surfaces can respond more naturally to the environment and changing light sources. Lumen is not a promise of full hardware ray tracing everywhere: its implementation can use software or hardware ray-tracing techniques, and the available path varies by platform and settings. Epic’s Lumen technical details

Virtual Shadow Maps: finer shadow detail

Virtual Shadow Maps can produce more detailed shadows across complex environments and characters. Epic has pointed to small details such as leaves, bricks, hats and outfit accessories as examples of what can cast visible shadows. The trade-off is rendering cost: high-quality shadows may take GPU resources that a player would rather spend on a steadier frame rate.

Temporal Super Resolution: reconstructing the image

Temporal Super Resolution (TSR) uses information across frames to reconstruct a higher-quality output from a lower internal resolution. It can improve edge clarity and image stability while reducing the amount of work needed to render every output pixel natively. The result depends on motion, internal resolution and quality settings; temporal reconstruction can also look soft or produce ghosting or shimmer in some scenes.

Which platforms get the features?

“UE5 Fortnite” does not mean identical graphics on every device. Epic’s support guidance describes the following differences for ray tracing and Lumen-related options. Epic’s Fortnite ray-tracing support page

Platform What to know
PlayStation 5 Lumen-based global illumination and reflections are available automatically, according to Epic. The 120 FPS mode limits access to the UE5 visual features listed in Epic’s original announcement.
Xbox Series X Lumen-based global illumination and reflections are available automatically, according to Epic. The 120 FPS mode limits access to the UE5 visual features listed in Epic’s original announcement.
Xbox Series S Lumen global illumination is supported, but ray-traced reflections are not. It should not be assumed to match Series X feature-for-feature.
Windows PC Options vary with GPU, CPU, drivers, operating system, DirectX 12, resolution and selected rendering settings. Hardware ray tracing requires an NVIDIA RTX 2060 or better and is unavailable in Performance Mode, according to Epic.
Cloud gaming Epic listed GeForce NOW as an option for players unable to upgrade older Windows PCs. Regional availability, latency and service limits vary; check the provider’s current terms before relying on it.

On PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, Epic’s original announcement says 120 FPS Mode must be off to use Nanite, Lumen, Virtual Shadow Maps and TSR. That is a direct choice between a high-refresh-rate mode and the listed visual features, rather than a setting that delivers both at once. Epic’s Chapter 4 feature and platform notes

Does UE5 make Fortnite faster or slower?

Neither outcome is universal. UE5 expands Fortnite’s visual capabilities, but the cost depends on which features are enabled and what hardware is doing the work. Nanite makes detailed geometry practical; TSR can help balance image quality and rendering load. Lumen, detailed shadows and especially hardware ray tracing can add substantial GPU work. Epic warns that ray tracing significantly reduces frame rates and recommends leaving it off for competitive play.

  • Average frame rate is not the whole story: sudden dips and inconsistent frame times can feel worse than a lower but steady rate.
  • Input latency matters to competitive players, who may prefer responsiveness over more elaborate lighting.
  • Visibility is personal and setting-dependent. Richer shadows and effects are not automatically an advantage in a match.

Do not treat a UE5 label as a promise of faster performance, worse performance or a fix for stuttering. Results depend on the machine, scene, settings and mode.

Which settings make sense for your goal?

For competitive play

  • Choose a rendering mode and graphics settings that deliver stable frame times on your system; Performance Mode may be preferable despite its simpler visuals.
  • Leave hardware ray tracing off. Epic says it is not available in Performance Mode and warns of a significant frame-rate cost.
  • Use a resolution and TSR setting that keeps opponents clear without undermining your target frame rate.
  • Judge changes in actual matches, not only in the lobby, and avoid chasing the highest possible FPS if it produces instability.

For richer visuals on PC

Players with suitable hardware can try DirectX 12, Nanite, Lumen, Virtual Shadow Maps and TSR settings, then add hardware ray tracing if supported. Epic’s documented route to the ray-tracing option is:

  1. Open Settings, then Video.
  2. Set the rendering mode to DirectX 12.
  3. Enable Nanite virtualized geometry.
  4. Set Global Illumination or Reflections to Lumen High or Lumen Epic.
  5. Enable Hardware Ray Tracing, if the option is supported on the system.
  6. Restart the game if prompted or required.

Epic’s documented PC requirement for hardware ray tracing is an NVIDIA RTX 2060 or better, DirectX 12 and compatible settings; it is not available in Performance Mode. Menus can change across game versions, platforms and localizations, so a missing option may reflect the mode or device rather than a fault. Hardware ray tracing can significantly lower frame rates. For console players choosing between visuals and refresh rate

On PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, decide whether the 120 FPS mode or the listed UE5 visual features matter more to you. These settings are not all available together under Epic’s original platform guidance. Series S also lacks ray-traced reflections, unlike the feature set described for Series X.

Are Creative, UEFN and Save the World the same?

No. Epic’s Chapter 4 announcement initially limited Nanite, Lumen and Virtual Shadow Maps to Battle Royale rather than creator-made islands and Save the World, while TSR was available more broadly. That early distinction has since changed in part: on May 2, 2025, Epic announced that Fortnite Creative was receiving the Chapter 5 Time of Day Manager with Lumen and Nanite lighting, bringing its lighting workflow closer to UEFN’s. Feature support remains dependent on the specific tool, published island, platform and version. A creator should check whether a feature is supported in the UEFN editor, a live island or the player-facing mode in question; the initial Battle Royale rollout should not be mistaken for permanent parity or permanent exclusion. The available sources do not establish that Save the World shares Battle Royale’s UE5 feature set.

What does UE5 mean for Fortnite creators?

For creators, the engine work is broader than visual polish. UEFN and Verse let developers build and script experiences; lighting workflows, physics and simulation, and more detailed environments affect what islands can do. Epic’s v36.00 announcement described Scene Graph Beta as a foundational layer whose scene elements can be accessed through Verse and modified at runtime. These are creator-facing tools, not changes every Battle Royale player will necessarily notice. Epic’s v36.00 announcement

What PC hardware did Epic originally specify?

Epic’s December 2022 Chapter 4 announcement gave these Nanite specifications. They are historical guidance from the UE5.1 rollout, not a complete or verified statement of every Fortnite PC requirement in 2026.

Category Epic’s original Chapter 4 guidance
Nanite minimum NVIDIA Maxwell-generation or newer, or AMD GCN-generation or newer; current drivers; Windows 10 version 1909.1350 or newer with DirectX 12 Agility SDK, or Windows 11.
Nanite recommended NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 or newer, or AMD Radeon RX 5700 or newer; current Windows and drivers; DirectX 12.

Meeting a GPU specification alone does not guarantee a particular frame rate. CPU limits, VRAM, resolution, cooling, background tasks and the target refresh rate all affect actual performance. Do not use the historical RTX 2080 recommendation as a current universal buying rule.

How to troubleshoot a missing feature or poor result

  • A graphics option is unavailable: Check rendering mode, platform, Performance Mode and console 120 FPS mode, then verify that the setting applies to the mode you are playing.
  • Frame rate falls after enabling Lumen or ray tracing: Turn off hardware ray tracing first, then lower Lumen quality or shadows and compare under similar match conditions.
  • The image looks blurry: Adjust TSR quality or output resolution; reconstruction quality depends on the internal resolution and setting.
  • Shimmering or ghosting appears: Try another TSR quality level and compare the scene; temporal reconstruction can show artifacts in some motion conditions.
  • Stuttering follows a DirectX 12 change: Shader compilation or asset preparation can cause temporary hitching in some games and configurations. Allow caches to build before judging, and consider driver or rendering-mode changes if it persists; this is not a guarantee that every Fortnite system behaves the same way.

Is Fortnite on UE5.6, UE5.7 or another current version?

Epic’s public Fortnite news index shows ongoing Battle Royale and UEFN development, but the available official material does not establish one current UE5.x version for all Fortnite experiences. Do not infer Fortnite’s production branch from the newest public Unreal Engine release: a live game can use a customized branch, selectively integrate features or backport changes.
