Yes. Meta Quest 3 gained support for using apps while lying down in the v64 software rollout, which began the week of April 8, 2024. The feature lets you recenter the view for a reclined position; it is intended mainly for video, browsing and stationary experiences, not as a way to make every VR game work horizontally.
When Quest 3 got lying-down support
Quest 3 received the feature in v64. The earlier v63 rollout brought lying-down support to Quest 2 and Quest Pro, but not initially to Quest 3—a distinction that caused some early coverage to blur the timeline. Meta’s v64 release notes describe the feature as suited to casual experiences such as media playback and stationary immersive gaming. The v63 listing documents the earlier Quest 2 and Quest Pro rollout.
It is a software feature, not a special bed mode, new sensor or promise of sleep-friendly ergonomics. Availability can still vary as software and features roll out, and Meta may move the setting in later Horizon OS versions.
How to turn on “Use Apps While Lying Down”
- Put on the headset and open Quick Settings or the full Settings panel.
- Open Experimental and enable Use Apps While Lying Down. If the labels differ, search Settings for “lying down”; the location can change between Horizon OS versions.
- Recline or lie down in the position you plan to use.
- Hold the Meta/Menu button on the right controller to recenter the virtual view for your new posture. Use the headset’s equivalent recenter control if you are not using a controller.
- Open a media app, browser or stationary experience.
The original v64 instructions specify the setting and controller recenter action in Meta’s release notes. You may need to turn your body toward the direction you want to face before recentering.

What works well—and what may not
Good fits for a reclined posture
- Watching flat-screen or immersive video on a virtual screen.
- Browsing the web, reading, or using social and productivity apps that stay in front of you.
- Stationary games and experiences that do not depend on standing height or room-scale movement.
Why some games remain awkward
The system setting changes how the headset handles orientation and lets you reset the view around a reclined posture. It cannot redesign an app. A game may expect you to stand, reach toward floor-level objects, crouch, turn in a room, or hold controllers in a forward-facing play space. Menus can end up behind you, and some interactions may be difficult or unavailable when horizontal. Choose the app’s seated or stationary mode if it offers one; lying-down support is not a guarantee that every title will work.
Different meanings of “lying down”
- Reclined: On a bed, sofa or similar surface; this is the posture the feature is intended to accommodate.
- Seated: Conventional chair-based VR, which remains distinct from lying-down use.
- Room-scale: Moving around a defined physical play area; it is not appropriate while lying down.
- Prone: Face-down use is not assured to work well and can be uncomfortable or unsafe.
- Sleep use: This is not a sleep product or a certification for wearing the headset while asleep.
Other features in Quest 3’s v64 update
Improved passthrough
Meta also listed Quest 3 passthrough improvements in v64. Passthrough uses the headset cameras to show the physical surroundings, including for mixed reality and checking the room. It remains a camera view, not a replacement for unobstructed eyesight: detail, color and exposure can differ from reality, and motion artifacts or distortion may occur.

External microphone support
The v64 notes list external microphone support as a Quest 3-only addition in that update. It can be useful for recording, streaming, calls or multiplayer chat, but support for a particular microphone depends on the device, connector or adapter, app and software behavior. The update does not mean every USB or wireless microphone will work automatically.
Continuing a cast after removing the headset
Road to VR’s v64 coverage reported that casting could continue when a user removed the headset, making it easier to step away briefly without ending the session. This detail comes from specialist reporting rather than the cited Meta release notes.

Troubleshooting lying-down mode
The setting is missing
- Check Settings > System > Software Update for an available update.
- Restart the headset, then search Settings for “lying down” in case Meta has moved the toggle.
- Check the installed Horizon OS version and allow time for a staged feature rollout to reach your headset.
- If it is still absent on an updated Quest 3, contact Meta Quest support. Joining the Public Test Channel is not necessary just to obtain a feature released publicly.
The view is tilted or facing the wrong way
- Return upright briefly and face the direction you want the virtual view to face.
- Lie down in your intended position and hold the Meta/Menu button to recenter.
- If the view remains wrong, reset Guardian or room setup and try recentering again.
Tracking is unreliable
Try moderate, even lighting; keep the headset cameras unobstructed and away from bedding, walls or a headboard that blocks their view. Dark rooms, featureless surroundings, hands or controllers outside the cameras’ useful field of view, and rapid movement can all make tracking harder.
An app still behaves as if you are standing
The app may rely on standing height, floor-level interactions or a fixed interface that the system setting cannot change. Use its seated or stationary option, if available, or switch to an experience designed for use without room-scale movement.

Comfort and safety in bed
Reclining changes where the Quest 3 presses against your face and whether its strap slips or a pillow pushes on the headset. The headset’s front weight can also contribute to facial pressure or neck fatigue. A different strap may help with fit, but adds cost and weight; a rigid rear support or battery may press against a pillow. There is no basis here to promise that a particular setup will be comfortable for long sessions.
- Keep controllers and charging cables clear of your face and body.
- Do not let bedding block ventilation or cover the headset cameras.
- Avoid room-scale and active applications while lying down, and do not treat passthrough as perfect normal vision.
- Take breaks and stop if you experience nausea, eye strain, headache, neck pain or pressure discomfort.
- Do not assume it is safe to fall asleep wearing the headset: discomfort, battery depletion, heat and missed surroundings are practical risks.
Is Quest 3 worth buying just for lying-down use?
Usually, this feature alone is a weak reason to buy or upgrade. It is most relevant if you want a virtual screen for films, browsing or stationary games and find reclining useful. It matters less if your main activities are fitness, room-scale games or standing interactions. Someone who primarily wants ordinary 2D video may be better served by a tablet, laptop or television.

Quest 2 and Quest Pro received lying-down support in the v63-era rollout, so upgrading solely for this feature may not make sense if you already own one. Quest 3 and Quest 3S are both part of the current Quest family, but they do not have identical optics or ergonomics. Meta positions the Quest 3S as a lower-cost model; it does not use Quest 3’s pancake-lens optical system. Quest 3 may suit readers who prioritize visual clarity for virtual screens, while a 3S may suit those prioritizing a lower-cost entry. Check the live regional store price before buying; historical launch prices are not current prices.
If fit is the obstacle, identify whether the issue is strap pressure, facial-interface contact or balance before choosing an accessory. Meta’s accessory hub lists options, but a rear support or battery can be uncomfortable against a pillow. No specific accessory is guaranteed to improve reclined comfort.
