Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIf Fortnite’s FPS counter drops or the game stutters, first check that your PC meets Epic’s current requirements, verify the game files, then change one graphics or system setting at a time and compare the result in the same repeatable situation. These steps are for Windows PC; console and mobile players should use troubleshooting for their platform. No setting is a guaranteed fix because results depend on the hardware.
First, check whether it is an FPS problem
Turn on Fortnite’s Show FPS display and watch it in a repeatable situation, such as the same area of a match. Epic’s April 2026 competitive-settings guide recommends using the counter while comparing settings. Note whether the frame rate stays low, falls in visually busy scenes, briefly hitches, or worsens after extended play. Change one thing at a time so you can tell whether it helped.
FPS drops and stutters are rendering problems on your device. If the FPS counter stays steady but you rubber-band or actions register late, that points instead to network latency or packet loss. Epic treats latency as a separate troubleshooting issue; router changes are not an FPS fix.
Check requirements and verify Fortnite’s files
Compare your PC with Epic’s current Fortnite PC system requirements before trying optimizations. Epic cautions that steps below the requirements will not improve the experience. Requirements can change, so use the current support page rather than older hardware lists.
#1 Best Overall
- Powered by Radeon RX 9070 XT
- WINDFORCE Cooling System
- Hawk Fan
- Server-grade Thermal Conductive Gel
- RGB Lighting
- Open the Epic Games Launcher and select Library.
- Find Fortnite, open its management menu, and choose Verify.
- Let verification finish; Epic says it can take a few minutes depending on the game’s size.
Verification checks the installation for damaged or missing files. It does not increase the PC’s rendering capacity.
Compare Fortnite’s graphics settings
Lower settings can reduce the graphics workload, but they trade visual quality for performance and may not help every PC. Epic’s support guidance describes Performance – Lower Graphical Fidelity as an option for lower-end hardware or low scalability settings. To try it, open Fortnite’s video settings, change Rendering Mode to Performance – Lower Graphical Fidelity, apply the change, and restart the game as prompted.
Epic’s 2026 guide also recommends comparing Performance Mode, low textures and meshes, and V-Sync off. Keep your monitor’s native resolution as a starting point; if FPS remains below your goal, try lowering 3D resolution in 10% increments. If your frame limit causes screen tearing, Epic suggests matching it to the display’s refresh rate. These are options to test, not universal best settings. Compare FPS and image clarity in the same game situation.
Make sure Fortnite uses the dedicated GPU
Laptops and some multi-GPU PCs may run Fortnite on integrated graphics instead of the high-performance graphics card. Epic’s GPU selection instructions cover choosing Fortnite in NVIDIA Control Panel or AMD graphics settings. The exact controls depend on your hardware and graphics software. After changing the selection, relaunch the game and compare the FPS counter.

Reduce competing background load and check drivers
Close programs you do not need while playing, especially those competing for CPU or GPU resources. Epic recommends keeping graphics drivers current; get them from your GPU manufacturer and check the release notes for your specific model rather than assuming one driver version is best for every PC.
Epic’s low-FPS support page also lists Windows power mode and NVIDIA Control Panel checks. Treat those as optional follow-ups: available settings vary by PC and software version, so use Epic’s instructions rather than applying settings that may not exist on your system.
Check cooling if performance worsens during play
If Fortnite runs acceptably at first but becomes less stable after extended play, inspect airflow. Epic identifies overheating as a possible cause, not a certainty.
- Make sure the PC’s vents are not blocked.
- Check for dust around vents and fans; clean only as directed by the device maker.
- Use the computer in a well-ventilated space.
Cleaning equipment such as an electronics compressed-air duster is relevant only when dust or blocked airflow is present, and should be used according to the product and device instructions. It is not an FPS booster by itself.

Consider hardware only after troubleshooting
Epic says an SSD or 6 GB of RAM or more can help older systems fit Fortnite in memory and reduce hitches and stutters. That is conditional guidance for older PCs, not a promise to fix sustained low FPS or a requirement for every player. Check your system against the current requirements before deciding whether an upgrade makes sense.
A 120 Hz, 144 Hz, or faster monitor can display higher frame rates when the PC already produces them, but it does not increase rendering capacity or repair FPS drops. Consider one only if your PC can sustain frame rates that make the refresh rate useful.
If FPS still drops, record the pattern
The cause cannot be identified from the symptom alone. If the checks above do not help, note your CPU, GPU and RAM; Fortnite’s rendering mode; graphics-driver version; whether the counter falls or only network behavior changes; temperatures if available; and when the problem began. Include whether it happens in a particular area or after extended play when contacting Epic Games Player Support. Epic cautions that its recommended steps may improve performance only slightly—or make no difference—depending on the hardware.
