Fortnite has genuinely returned to Apple’s App Store. Epic announced the worldwide return on May 19, 2026, and the game is now listed for compatible iPhone and iPad models in the United States and other supported markets. Australia is the major exception: Epic says the App Store version has not returned there because its dispute with Apple over payment terms remains unresolved.
This is not merely a future announcement, and it is not the end of the Epic-versus-Apple fight. It is a region-dependent return to iOS distribution while Epic continues challenging Apple’s fees, payment rules, and restrictions on alternative app stores.

What Epic announced
On May 19, 2026, Epic said Fortnite was returning to Apple’s App Store “around the world.” Epic also said it would continue opposing Apple’s App Store fees, alternative-store restrictions, and payment rules. The company framed the return as part of an ongoing legal and regulatory campaign—not as a settlement that ended its dispute with Apple.

According to Epic, Fortnite has not returned to the Australian App Store because the companies remain divided over the payment terms that would apply to the iOS version.

Is Fortnite downloadable on iPhone and iPad now?
Yes—in the United States, Fortnite has a live App Store listing for both iPhone and iPad. The listing identifies Epic Games Inc. as the developer, marks the game as free with in-app purchases, and lists an app size of approximately 1.8 GB. It also carries a 13+ age rating and current 2026 release notes, indicating that this is an actively maintained version rather than an abandoned legacy build.
In the United States, Fortnite is no longer limited to cloud gaming, alternative marketplaces, or unofficial installation workarounds. Players can use the normal App Store process on a compatible device.

Where Fortnite is available on iOS
Epic’s current announcement and support information describe several official distribution routes. Availability can vary by country, so a Fortnite listing—or its absence—from one country’s App Store does not establish the status everywhere.

How to install Fortnite from the App Store
- Open the Apple App Store on your iPhone or iPad.
- Search for Fortnite, or open the official listing directly.
- Confirm that the developer is Epic Games Inc.
- Tap Get and authenticate with Apple’s normal download process.
- Open the game, then sign in to an Epic Games account or create one when prompted.
- Allow the initial game data download and any subsequent updates to finish.
Use the official App Store listing rather than an IPA file, unofficial sideloading service, or third-party download page. Epic says unsupported third-party installation methods are used at the player’s own risk.
Installing through the Epic Games Store
In the European Union, Japan, and Brazil, Epic also lists the Epic Games Store as an official iOS distribution route. The installation requirements for the store app are separate from the requirements shown on the App Store listing:

Compatibility is only a baseline. It does not mean that every supported device will deliver the same frame rate, resolution, graphics settings, thermal behavior, or battery life. Older supported iPhones and iPads may run hotter, consume more battery, or use reduced visual settings. Devices below the listed generations should be treated as unsupported unless Epic’s current listing says otherwise.

Why Fortnite disappeared from iOS
Fortnite was removed from Apple’s App Store on August 13, 2020, after Epic introduced a direct-payment option inside the game that bypassed Apple’s in-app payment system. Apple responded by removing the app, and Epic sued Apple, arguing that Apple’s control over iOS distribution and payments was anticompetitive.
The dispute later involved court orders and continuing arguments over external payment links, App Store rules, commissions, and alternative app marketplaces. The 2026 return therefore was not a routine reapproval of an ordinary app. It followed years of litigation, regulatory scrutiny, and pressure over how Apple operates its mobile platform.
Epic has said Apple told the U.S. Supreme Court that regulators were examining what commission Apple could charge in major markets outside the United States. Epic argued that Apple would face greater disclosure about its App Store costs and that regulators would not continue accepting what Epic characterizes as excessive fees. Those are Epic’s arguments, not neutral findings that Apple’s fees are unlawful in every country.

Why Australia is still different
Australia is not a permanent worldwide ban, but it is the clearest exception to Epic’s “around the world” announcement. Epic says it won its Australian case against Apple and that the court found many of Apple’s developer terms unlawful. Epic also says it cannot return to the Australian App Store under the payment arrangement it currently regards as unlawful.
Epic says it is seeking further court action unless Apple agrees to lawful interim payment terms. This is Epic’s account of the unresolved position; it should not be read as proof that Fortnite is permanently blocked in Australia.
App Store or Epic Games Store?
| App Store | Epic Games Store |
|---|---|
| Familiar Apple installation and update process | Useful in regions where Epic’s alternative store is officially available |
| Available on iPhone and iPad in supported App Store markets | Requires additional marketplace installation steps |
| No alternative marketplace setup is required | Has separate stated requirements: iOS 17.6+ for iPhone and iPadOS 18+ for iPad |
| Uses the normal Apple storefront | Availability depends on region and local platform rules |
Neither route should be confused with unofficial sideloading. Epic’s support guidance warns that third-party installation methods are not officially supported and are used at the player’s own risk.
Common problems and what they mean
- Fortnite does not appear in search: Check the Apple account’s country or region and open the official listing directly. Storefront availability is location-dependent.
- Your device is too old: Compare it with the App Store’s current compatibility list. Older iPhones and iPads may not be supported.
- There is not enough storage: The listed app size is about 1.8 GB, and the game may need additional space for downloaded content, updates, and temporary installation files.
- The game will not update: If it was installed through an unofficial method, Epic may not support the installation or its update process. Use an official route where available.
- You are in Australia: The missing App Store listing is consistent with Epic’s stated May 2026 position.
- You expect identical performance across devices: Minimum compatibility does not guarantee identical frame rates, graphics quality, heat levels, or battery life.
What the return means
For players, the practical result is straightforward: Fortnite is once again a normal App Store download in the United States and many other markets. For Apple and Epic, however, the return is another stage in a broader platform dispute.
Epic’s announcement does not say that Apple accepted all of Epic’s demands, that Apple’s fees are unlawful everywhere, or that the lawsuit is over. The separate App Store and alternative-store routes also show why “Fortnite is back on iOS” is incomplete without a country and distribution method.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Fortnite has returned to iPhone and iPad through Apple’s App Store in the United States and most supported markets. Australia remains excluded according to Epic, alternative stores are region-limited, and Epic’s legal and regulatory fight with Apple is still ongoing.
