When Fortnite will not open on a Windows PC, start by confirming the PC meets Fortnite’s minimum requirements, then verify the game files in Epic Games Launcher. If Fortnite shows as running without a window, repair Easy Anti-Cheat and only then review a carefully scoped Windows Security exclusion. Update graphics drivers, correct the Windows clock, and check available disk space before considering a reinstall.
Use the fix that matches what you see
Fortnite launch failures have several distinct symptoms. Choosing the matching branch avoids changing security settings or reinstalling files unnecessarily.

| The launcher refuses to start the game or reports damaged data | Confirm minimum requirements, then verify Fortnite files | Verification repairs differences without deleting saved data |
| Epic Games Launcher says Fortnite is running, but no game window appears | Verify files, repair Easy Anti-Cheat, then review a Fortnite-folder exclusion in Windows Security | This follows Epic’s documented path for the “running but not opening” symptom |
| An error specifically mentions Easy Anti-Cheat or its service | Repair the Easy Anti-Cheat service; reinstall it if the service cannot start | The anti-cheat service must initialize before Fortnite can open |
| The game worked until a driver, Windows, or game update | Update the graphics driver and recheck the system clock and free disk space | Driver and system-state inconsistencies can prevent launch integrity checks |
| You are on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, or another non-Windows platform | Use that platform’s Fortnite and system troubleshooting process | The Epic Games Launcher and Windows Security steps below apply to Windows PC |
Before changing anything, write down the exact error text, whether the launcher stays open, your platform, and what changed immediately before the failure. Those details determine whether the problem is game data, anti-cheat, security software, or a broader Windows condition.
1. Confirm the PC meets Fortnite’s requirements
Epic’s general PC troubleshooting guidance puts the requirements check first. Compare your Windows PC with the current minimum requirements listed by Epic for your edition of Fortnite. Check the operating-system version, processor, memory, graphics hardware and available storage rather than assuming that a PC that runs other games is sufficient.

Check the practical conditions
- Use the same Windows PC and graphics hardware on which you intend to play; a requirement check for a different machine does not establish compatibility.
- Make sure the drive containing Fortnite has usable free space. Epic identifies low disk space as a possible cause of corrupted-data and launch problems.
- If the machine only recently fell below the requirements—for example, after a graphics-driver or Windows change—treat that as a compatibility issue before attempting repeated launches.
If the PC does meet the requirements, continue with file verification. If it does not, repairs cannot make unsupported hardware meet a game requirement; the practical answer is to use a supported system or hardware configuration.
2. Verify Fortnite’s files in Epic Games Launcher
Verification is the lowest-risk repair for a damaged or incomplete installation. Epic says the process checks Fortnite’s files, repairs differences and does not affect saved data.
- Open Epic Games Launcher and select Library.
- Find Fortnite and open its three-dot menu.
- Choose Manage, then select Verify.
- Let the check finish. Do not close the launcher or interrupt the process while it is comparing and repairing files.
- When verification completes, select Launch and test Fortnite once.
If verification reports a problem
Allow the repair to complete, then launch again. A second failed launch is useful information: note whether the message changed, whether the launcher still says “running,” and whether an Easy Anti-Cheat error appeared. Do not jump straight to a full reinstall while verification is still able to repair the installation.

3. Repair Easy Anti-Cheat
Easy Anti-Cheat is the next target when the error names the service or when Epic Games Launcher changes Fortnite’s status to “running” but never displays a game window.
Open the Fortnite anti-cheat folder
- Close Fortnite and exit Epic Games Launcher so that no launch process is still active.
- Open Fortnite’s installation folder in File Explorer.
- Navigate to
FortniteGame/Binaries/Win64/EasyAntiCheat. The exact parent drive and folder depend on where you installed the game. - Locate the Easy Anti-Cheat setup application in that folder. Right-click it and choose the option to run it with administrator permissions if Windows presents that choice.
- Select Fortnite in the setup tool and choose the repair option. Let the service repair finish, then restart Epic Games Launcher and try Fortnite.
When the service cannot start
Epic also recommends reinstalling Easy Anti-Cheat when its service cannot start. Use the reinstall option supplied by the setup application or Epic’s Fortnite support instructions, then restart Windows before testing the game. Reinstalling the anti-cheat service is a narrower intervention than reinstalling all Fortnite files.
If the Easy Anti-Cheat folder is missing
Return to Epic Games Launcher and run Manage > Verify again. A missing or incomplete anti-cheat component can be restored by file repair. If verification cannot restore it and the service still cannot be installed, record the exact message before escalating to Epic Player Support.

- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.

4. Review Windows Security exclusions carefully
For the specific case in which Epic says Fortnite is running but no window opens, Epic instructs users to add the Fortnite folder through Windows Security’s exclusion controls. An exclusion changes how Microsoft Defender scans that location, so use the narrowest folder selection possible and do not disable real-time protection globally.

- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Under Virus & threat protection settings, choose Manage settings.
- Scroll to Exclusions and select Add or remove exclusions.
- Choose Add an exclusion, select Folder, and browse to the Fortnite installation folder.
- Try launching Fortnite once. If the exclusion does not change the symptom, remove it rather than accumulating broader exclusions.
Do not add an entire drive, the Windows folder, or unrelated download locations to solve a Fortnite launch problem. If you use another security product, check its quarantine and blocked-application history using that product’s own controls; avoid turning off protection system-wide as a first response.
5. Update graphics drivers and correct system conditions
Epic’s PC troubleshooting guidance points to current video drivers. Its corrupted-data guidance also identifies inconsistent device date and time and low disk space as possible causes. These checks are quick and can explain why a previously working installation stops launching.

Update the graphics driver
- Identify whether your PC uses integrated or discrete graphics and which manufacturer supplies the driver.
- Install the current driver offered through Windows Update or the graphics manufacturer’s official support channel for your exact model and Windows version.
- Restart Windows after the installation, even if the installer does not require an immediate restart.
- Launch Fortnite from Epic Games Launcher and note whether the error changes.
A driver intended for a different graphics model or Windows edition can create new problems. If a failure began immediately after a driver update, use the manufacturer’s supported rollback option or restore the prior known-working driver, then test again.
Synchronize date and time
- Open Windows Settings and go to the date-and-time controls.
- Enable automatic time and automatic time-zone settings where available.
- Use the system’s synchronization control, then restart Epic Games Launcher.
An incorrect clock can interfere with services and integrity checks. Check the clock again after a reboot if the problem returns.

Make room on the installation drive
Check the drive that contains Fortnite, not only the drive containing Windows. Low free space can prevent updates or repairs from completing cleanly. Remove or move files by your normal Windows storage method, then run file verification again so the launcher can complete any pending repair.

6. Keep TPM and Secure Boot in context
Epic’s dated announcement says that Windows PC players entering tournaments such as FNCS events with an Account Level requirement of 350 or higher must enable TPM and Secure Boot. That statement is tournament-eligibility context; it is not evidence that every Fortnite player must enable those features to launch the game.
Do not change firmware security settings solely because Fortnite will not open unless an Epic message or a tournament rule specifically requires them. If you do need them for an eligible event, follow your motherboard or PC manufacturer’s instructions, confirm that your Windows installation supports the change, and keep recovery information available before altering firmware settings.
7. Reinstall only after targeted repairs fail
A complete Fortnite reinstall takes longer and consumes more bandwidth than verification or anti-cheat repair, so reserve it for an installation that remains damaged after those steps. First record the error and confirm that the launcher has finished every pending verification. Then uninstall Fortnite through Epic Games Launcher, restart Windows, install it again to a drive with sufficient free space, and run one clean launch before adding optional exclusions or other changes.
If the reinstall itself fails, capture the installer message, available disk space, Windows version, graphics-driver version and whether Easy Anti-Cheat can be installed. Those details are more useful to support than a general statement that “Fortnite does not work.”
Fortnite still will not launch: what to collect for support
When the documented repair sequence does not resolve the problem, contact Epic Player Support with a concise diagnostic record:
- The exact error code or full wording, including any Easy Anti-Cheat message.
- Whether Epic Games Launcher shows Fortnite as running, closes, freezes or returns immediately to the Library.
- Your Windows edition and version, graphics hardware and current graphics-driver version.
- Whether the requirements check passed, verification repaired files, and anti-cheat repair or reinstall completed.
- Available free space on the Fortnite drive, the status of automatic date and time, and whether the issue began after an update.
- Your platform and account context if the failure occurs only during a particular tournament or event.
This record lets support distinguish a damaged game installation from a service-start failure, a security block, a driver condition or an eligibility requirement.
Quick Recap
If the manual Windows checks do not identify the cause, Outbyte PC Repair is an optional shortcut that can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, adjust settings that affect CPU, RAM and disk load, clean temporary and cache files, check Windows settings and missing updates, and provide an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7, offers a free trial by category for at least two days, and then requires a paid subscription. It complements an antivirus rather than replacing one; results vary and no tool repairs every crash.
