The five groups below follow the contemporary breakdown of the update; each groups several related changes, rather than counting only five individual patch-note items. This is a historical look at the 2018 mode, not a claim that it is playable today.
What was Playground LTM?
Epic described Playground as “a low-pressure environment where friends can let their creativity run wild.” The original Limited Time Mode put players on the Battle Royale map for a one-hour session, with altered storm, respawn, resource, and loot rules. Epic’s v4.5 patch notes document those original settings; the v5.10 patch notes announce the mode’s return and detail its v2 changes.

1. More loot and faster access to supplies
Epic increased the amount and availability of equipment so players could spend less time searching and more time building or fighting. The v2 settings included 100 Supply Drops, while the map continued to have 100 Llamas. Chests spawned three weapons along with more ammunition and consumables; floor loot spawned three items; and ammo cans held ten times the normal amount of ammunition.
Healing and weapon resources were adjusted too: Chug Jug and Slurp Juice spawn chances rose, bandage spawns fell, and Chug Jugs could appear as floor loot. Rocket ammunition capacity increased to 60, with higher rocket-ammo drop rates. Launch and bounce pads became more likely to spawn. Grey vending machines were removed, while higher-tier vending machines became more likely.

2. Players could choose teams during a match
Players could switch teams in-game, making it possible to team up for cooperative building or split into opposing teams to practice fights. Aim assist worked when a gamepad user fought players on an opposing team. Voice chat, however, remained enabled across all teams in this version. Epic mentioned more voice-chat customization only as a future possibility, not as a feature included in v2.
3. One player leaving no longer ended the session
In the earlier version, a player leaving could bring the session to an end. V2 changed that behavior: a match would not end simply because one player left the server. Friends could keep using the session even if someone dropped out.

4. Respawns and glider deployment got faster
The respawn timer dropped from 10 seconds to 3 seconds, reducing the wait before returning to play. Epic also lowered the height at which the glider was forced to deploy. Players could skydive for longer and reach the ground sooner after respawning.
5. Golf carts and other practice-friendly details
Golf carts, called All Terrain Karts in Fortnite, were added with a 100% spawn rate in Playground. That made them a reliable part of the mode’s sandbox. Other practice-oriented adjustments—including aim-assist behavior and healing-item spawn changes—fit into the update’s broader focus on experimentation and fighting with friends; they are included in the relevant sections above rather than treated as separate headline changes.

How v2 differed from the original Playground
The original mode already offered a private-feeling sandbox on the Battle Royale map, but its specific rules shaped how players used it. Epic’s v4.5 notes set a one-hour session, friendly fire, and respawns except when the storm downed a player. The storm did not begin closing until 55 minutes into the session, then took five minutes to close. Gathering yielded ten times the normal resources, and chests and ammo boxes spawned every time.
V2 built on that foundation rather than replacing Playground’s purpose: it made supplies more plentiful, added more ways to arrange practice, and reduced interruptions from leaving or waiting to respawn. SlashGear’s July 24, 2018 article, “Fortnite Playground LTM v2 Detailed: Here Are The 5 Major Changes”, provides the contemporary five-group framing; Epic’s patch notes are the source for the mode’s documented mechanics.
