Fortnite Refunds: Who Got Paid, How Much, and What Happens Next

The FTC’s Fortnite refund program did not guarantee $100 per player. Claims are closed, and another payment round is expected in 2026 after review.

The headline is misleading: Epic Games did not promise every Fortnite player $100. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) administers refunds funded by Epic’s settlement, and approved amounts vary. The FTC sent 969,173 payments totaling more than $126 million in June 2025. New claims are closed, but the agency says it expects another round in 2026 after reviewing and validating claims.

Why is the FTC sending Fortnite refunds?

The refund program is part of a consumer settlement over Epic’s Fortnite billing practices. The FTC alleged that Epic charged players for unwanted purchases, allowed children to incur unauthorized charges without parental permission, and blocked some players from accessing purchased content after they disputed charges. The FTC administers the consumer refund program; it is not a direct payment offer from Epic to every player.

The consumer refund settlement is separate from the children’s privacy settlement. The FTC’s March 2023 announcement says the final order required Epic to pay $245 million for consumer refunds and prohibited charging consumers through dark patterns or without affirmative consent. It separately describes a $275 million penalty connected to children’s privacy allegations. Epic also described the separate settlement amounts in its December 2022 statement.

How many Fortnite players were paid, and when?

In a June 25, 2025 announcement, the FTC said it was sending 969,173 checks and PayPal payments, scheduled for June 25 and 26, to U.S. players with valid claims submitted by February 14, 2025. Those payments totaled more than $126 million.

Fortnite eGift Card
  • Redeemable on accounts in the United States and in U.S. Dollars.
  • Gift card must be redeemed at EpicGames.com/redeem. This gift card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly on a console device (PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, etc.)
  • If you play Fortnite experiences on a console device, you need to link your Epic Games account to your console account(s) so items purchased at Fortnite.com/item-shop appear across all of your linked accounts
  • Requires internet connection, valid Epic account and prior acceptance of the terms
  • Redemption: Online

That was the second payment round. The FTC reported that the December 2024 round comprised 629,344 payments totaling more than $72 million. By June 2025, it said cumulative refunds related to Epic’s billing practices had reached nearly $200 million. These figures describe completed or announced payment rounds, not a guaranteed amount for an individual claimant. See the FTC’s June 25, 2025 release for the round details.

How much will my refund be?

There is no flat $100 award. The FTC says an approved claim’s amount depends on multiple factors, including how many people file claims. The agency has not published a guaranteed individual amount for the next payment round, so the June 2025 total cannot be used to predict what a particular claimant will receive.

Who was eligible to apply for a refund?

The FTC’s program accepted claims from people who met at least one of these criteria:

  • They were charged in-game currency for items they did not want between January 2017 and September 2022.
  • A child made credit-card charges without a parent’s knowledge between January 2017 and November 2018.
  • Their account was locked between January 2017 and September 2022 after they complained to their credit-card company about wrongful charges.

The person filing had to be at least 18. A parent or guardian had to submit the form for a younger player. Meeting an application criterion did not guarantee approval or a particular refund amount.

Fortnite Physical Gift Card
  • An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
  • If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
  • The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
  • Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.
  • Redemption: Online

Can I still file a Fortnite refund claim?

No. The FTC says the claim deadline was July 9, 2025, and the program is closed to new claims. If you filed after February 14, 2025, the agency says you do not need to take further action while it reviews your claim. It expects additional payments in 2026 after all claims have been reviewed and validated, but has not announced a date, number of payments, or total for that round. Check the FTC’s Fortnite Refunds page for current status.

When will I get my refund?

The FTC expects another payment round in 2026 after claim review and validation. It has not provided a specific payment date. If you filed a claim, follow the official program page for updates rather than relying on messages that claim to know your payment date or amount.

What if I received a check or PayPal payment?

The FTC says checks must be cashed within 90 days, and PayPal payments must be accepted within 30 days. If you have a question about a payment or claim, the FTC program page lists the refund administrator’s contact number: 1-833-915-0880.

How can I avoid Fortnite refund scams?

Use the FTC’s official Fortnite refund page to verify program information. The FTC says it will never demand money, make threats, tell you to transfer money, or promise you a prize. A request for a fee to file a claim or release a refund is a scam. Do not follow unsolicited refund links or share account or payment credentials with an unverified sender. The FTC also explains the warning signs in its consumer alert.
