Fortnite uses different naming rules depending on your platform. PlayStation normally shows your PlayStation Online ID, and Xbox normally shows your Xbox gamertag. On PC, Nintendo Switch, and mobile, Fortnite normally shows your Epic Games display name. Seeing the Epic name on Switch, PC, or mobile is therefore expected.
Which name should Fortnite display?
| Platform | Name Fortnite normally uses |
|---|---|
| PlayStation | PlayStation Online ID |
| Xbox | Xbox gamertag |
| Nintendo Switch | Epic Games display name |
| PC or Mac | Epic Games display name |
| Mobile | Epic Games display name |
These platform differences come from Epic’s account-name guidance. Nintendo Switch is the commonly missed exception: Fortnite does not normally use the Nintendo account name above the player.

Check where the name appears
First, identify the exact location. The name above your character in Fortnite is more useful for diagnosis than a name shown on the Epic Games website, launcher, friends list, or social overlay. Those areas can display Epic account information or linked-platform details.

If you are checking a menu rather than the in-game player label, an apparent mismatch may be normal.

Verify the linked account safely
If you are on PlayStation or Xbox and the displayed identity seems wrong, verify the account before changing or unlinking anything:
- Sign out of the Epic Games website.
- Select Sign in, then choose the icon for PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo.
- Sign in with the platform account that you use for Fortnite.
- Open Account and select Linked Accounts.
- Confirm the connected platform account and its display name.
Use Epic’s linked-account instructions if the account button is missing or the wrong Epic account opens. Signing in with the platform icon is important: visiting Epic while already signed into a different Epic account can make you inspect the wrong account.
How to change the name Fortnite shows
PlayStation
To change the name used on PlayStation, change your PlayStation Online ID through PlayStation. Changing your Epic Games display name will not change your PSN identity.
Rank #2
- Works with Nintendo Switch 2. C button not available
- Bonus Fortnite virtual item included (Googly Glider)
- Wireless controller with Bluetooth 5.0 technology
- Rechargeable lithium-ion battery: Up to 30 hours per charge*
- Two mappable Advanced Gaming Buttons
Xbox
To change the name used on Xbox, change your Xbox gamertag through Xbox or Microsoft. Changing the Epic display name will not change the gamertag.
PC, Nintendo Switch, or mobile
Change the Epic Games display name:
- Open your Epic Games Account settings.
- Find the Display name field.
- Enter the new name and select Continue.
Epic requires a verified email address, and its current guidance says the display name can be changed only once every two weeks. A lock icon may indicate that the cooldown is active. Players who began on console without completing account registration may first see a Finish Setting Up Your Account process. Menu wording can change as Epic updates its website; see the current Epic display-name instructions.
What happens to Fortnite progress?
Changing a console display name does not delete Fortnite progress, purchases, or content. Epic says that this data is saved to the linked Epic Games account.

Do not confuse a name change with unlinking an account. Unlinking can cause loss of access to skins, progress, and other information associated with the linked account or console. Epic also says that removing a platform-link restriction requires verification and that, after completing the process, another restriction removal may not be possible for 365 days.
Do not unlink just to fix a name
Unlinking is not a routine display-name fix. Do not create another Epic account or disconnect the current platform account until you have identified which account contains your Fortnite data. An automatically created or incomplete Epic account may have been made when Fortnite was first launched on a console; Epic warns that unlinking it can affect access to that console’s game data. Read Epic’s connected-account warnings before taking that step.
If PlayStation or Xbox still shows the wrong name
- Confirm that you are looking at the name above the character, not an Epic or social menu.
- Check which PlayStation or Xbox account is active on the console.
- Use the platform sign-in method on Epic’s website and inspect Account → Linked Accounts.
- Fully close and reopen Fortnite after confirming the account.
- Contact Epic Support if the platform identity remains inconsistent.
Epic’s documentation establishes the normal platform behavior but does not provide one universal fix for every unexpected PlayStation or Xbox display. An Epic name on those platforms is a reason to verify the account, not automatic proof that the account was hacked. On a child or Cabined Account, some account-management and display-name options may also be restricted.
