Lenovo lists the second-generation Legion Go—officially called the Legion Go Gen 2—with SteamOS as an operating-system option. The catch is its reported $1,199 starting price, which puts it firmly in premium-handheld territory and well above Steam Deck positioning.
Lenovo announced the device at CES 2026, with availability expected in June 2026. However, regional configurations, live stock and current retail pricing should be checked on Lenovo’s product page before buying.

What Lenovo actually announced
The product is not an unofficial Windows handheld with SteamOS installed by enthusiasts. Lenovo’s official Legion Go Gen 2 listing presents SteamOS and Windows 11 as configuration options.

- Cutting-Edge Performance: AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme with 8 cores, 16 threads, Radeon Graphics, and 16GB LPDDR5x-7500 for seamless multitasking and gaming
- High-Resolution Display: 8.8" WQXGA (2560x1600) IPS touchscreen, 500 nits brightness, 144Hz refresh rate, 97% DCI-P3 color accuracy, with Corning Gorilla Glass 5
- Ample Storage & Expansion: 512GB SSD plus M.2 PCIe 4.0 x4 slot for 1TB and microSD card reader for extra storage and future upgrades
- Enhanced Connectivity & Cooling: AMD Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, Legion Coldfront cooling, and two USB4 40Gbps ports for fast data transfer and power delivery
The naming is slightly confusing. Lenovo’s US retail page uses Legion Go Gen 2, while launch coverage called it the Legion Go powered by SteamOS (8.8”, 2). “Legion Go 2 SteamOS” is understandable shorthand, but it should not be confused with the smaller Legion Go S.
Android Authority reported the CES 2026 announcement on January 6, including an expected June 2026 release and a $1,199 starting price. Since the available Lenovo listing does not provide a definitive current US stock signal, that date should be treated as the announced availability target—not proof that every region is currently shipping the same model.

Why the SteamOS Legion Go 2 costs so much
The price is easier to understand when the device is viewed as a premium hardware platform rather than a cheaper Steam Deck alternative. Lenovo lists an unusually large OLED screen, a high-end Ryzen processor option, substantial memory and storage, detachable controllers and a large battery.
Key hardware
- Display: 8.8-inch OLED touchscreen, 1920×1200 resolution, 16:10 aspect ratio and 144Hz refresh rate.
- Display features: HDR/True Black support, up to 500 nits and 100% DCI-P3 coverage according to Lenovo.
- Processor: AMD Ryzen Z2-series options, up to the Ryzen Z2 Extreme.
- Graphics: The Z2 Extreme configuration is described by Lenovo as an 8-core/16-thread Zen 5 chip with Radeon 890M graphics based on RDNA 3.5.
- Memory: Up to 32GB of LPDDR5X.
- Storage: Up to a 2TB PCIe SSD, plus microSD expansion.
- Battery: 74Wh.
- Connectivity: Two USB-C ports with up to 40Gbps data transfer, DisplayPort 2.0 and USB Power Delivery 3.0, along with Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3.
- Controls: Detachable Legion TrueStrike controllers, with Hall-effect sticks reported in launch coverage.
- Included charger: Lenovo lists a 65W USB-C charger in the box.
These are maximum or platform-level specifications, not a guarantee that every SteamOS unit includes the Ryzen Z2 Extreme, 32GB of memory and 2TB of storage. Lenovo’s separate model listings show that configurations vary. For example, its US listings include both a 16GB/1TB configuration and a 32GB/2TB Z2 Extreme configuration.
That distinction matters: do not assume the reported $1,199 starting price applies to the top specification.

Large, fast and heavy
The 8.8-inch panel is one of the Legion Go Gen 2’s clearest differentiators. A 144Hz OLED display offers a more ambitious target than the conventional 60Hz or 90Hz screens found on many handhelds, while the 16:10 resolution provides extra vertical space for both games and desktop use.

The trade-off is portability. Lenovo lists a starting weight of approximately 0.92kg (2.03lb). The tablet portion measures 206mm × 136.7mm × 22.95mm, while the complete device with controllers measures 295.6mm × 136.7mm × 42.25mm.
In other words, this is a large handheld. The 74Wh battery is a substantial specification, but it is not a guarantee of long runtime. Brightness, refresh rate, game workload, APU power mode and thermal conditions will all affect endurance.
What SteamOS changes
SteamOS is not automatically a performance upgrade. Its primary benefit is the experience it provides around the hardware:
- Controller-first navigation.
- Direct access to a Steam library.
- Quick suspend and resume.
- Cloud-save integration.
- Less Windows desktop friction.
- A more console-like interface for users who primarily play Steam games.
For a handheld, those conveniences can matter as much as raw specifications. A SteamOS device is designed to feel closer to a console when launching games, changing settings and returning to a suspended session.
But SteamOS is not identical to Windows. It relies on Linux compatibility layers and game-specific support, so compatibility can vary with anti-cheat systems, third-party launchers, codecs, middleware, multiplayer authentication and Windows-only mod tools. Non-Steam games may also require additional setup.

- MAX COOLING, MANUAL CONTROL – The Legion Coldfront thermal system is built to handle serious heat. Increased radiators and fan blade’s surface area improves the airflow without increasing the noise. Upgraded dual heat pipes distribute heat more efficiently to keep your rig powerful and precise.
- UNLOCK MULTIPLE WAYS TO PLAY – Experience total freedom with the Legion Truestrike controllers. In FPS mode, the right controller can be detached, docked and operated as a mouse, giving you the edge in every firefight.

Lenovo says Legion Space is available only on Windows models. That means the SteamOS version may not offer the same Lenovo-specific software for performance profiles, firmware controls, remapping or device settings. SteamOS-native alternatives may provide some of those functions, but the available product information does not establish that every Legion Space feature has an equivalent replacement.
SteamOS versus Windows
| SteamOS Legion Go Gen 2 | Windows Legion Go Gen 2 |
|---|---|
| Console-like, controller-first interface | Full Windows desktop |
| Best suited to Steam-first libraries | Broader support for PC launchers and Game Pass |
| Less handheld configuration friction | More software, driver and utility flexibility |
| Legion Space listed as unavailable | Legion Space available |
| Potentially narrower anti-cheat and launcher compatibility | Broadest Windows game compatibility |
| Reported $1,199 starting price | Reported $1,049 launch price |
The reported $150 difference creates a difficult value question. Buyers are paying more for the SteamOS experience even though Windows offers broader compatibility. That premium may be worthwhile for someone who dislikes Windows on a handheld, but it is harder to justify for Game Pass subscribers or players who regularly use non-Steam launchers.
Both figures come from Android Authority’s launch coverage and should be treated as announced or launch-price comparisons, not universal current shelf prices. Taxes, regional pricing, configuration and discounts can change the final cost.
How it compares with the Steam Deck
The Legion Go 2 SteamOS is not an obvious Steam Deck replacement for every buyer. It is a premium alternative aimed at people who want more ambitious hardware.
Where the Legion Go 2 has the advantage
- Much larger 8.8-inch OLED display.
- 144Hz refresh rate.
- Higher-end Ryzen Z2 Extreme option.
- Up to 32GB of memory and 2TB of SSD storage.
- Detachable controllers.
- Larger 74Wh battery.
- More PC-like hardware flexibility.
Where the Steam Deck remains compelling
- Valve-designed hardware and software integration.
- A mature, familiar SteamOS experience.
- Strong community support and established troubleshooting knowledge.
- Lower-cost positioning than the reported Legion Go 2 starting price.
- Better value for buyers who mainly want straightforward Steam gaming rather than maximum specifications.
The correct choice depends on priorities. A Steam Deck buyer is usually paying for value and integration. A Legion Go 2 SteamOS buyer is paying for a larger premium display, a higher performance ceiling and more expansive hardware options. No current Steam Deck price is stated here because it should be checked directly on Valve’s store at the time of purchase.
Who should consider the SteamOS Legion Go 2?
This handheld makes the most sense for:
- Steam-first players who dislike navigating Windows on a small screen.
- Buyers who specifically want a large, high-refresh OLED display.
- Enthusiasts willing to pay for a Ryzen Z2 Extreme option, extra memory or large SSD capacity.
- Users interested in detachable controllers and console-style docking.
- People who want a handheld gaming PC but expect to launch most games through Steam.
Who should avoid it?
Consider a Windows model or a cheaper handheld instead if you:

Availability checklist
Before placing an order, confirm all of the following on the regional listing:
- That the operating system is SteamOS rather than Windows 11.
- The exact Ryzen processor, especially whether it is a Z2 or Z2 Extreme model.
- The installed memory and SSD capacity.
- Current stock and estimated shipping date.
- Warranty coverage for your region.
- Included accessories, including the charger and controller base.
- Whether the listing is for the Legion Go Gen 2 or the different Legion Go S.
Lenovo warns that specifications may vary by region and model. A US, UK, European or Asian listing may therefore differ in processor, memory, storage, warranty and availability.
The bottom line on the price
The SteamOS Legion Go 2 is real, but it is not positioned as a budget Steam Deck alternative. The reported $1,199 starting price buys a premium platform built around a large 8.8-inch OLED display, a 144Hz refresh rate, a 74Wh battery, detachable controllers and potentially much more memory and storage than a conventional Steam handheld.
What it does not buy is universal PC compatibility. SteamOS may make the device more pleasant to use, but buyers give up some Windows flexibility, including native access to Game Pass and the Windows-only Legion Space software.
For Steam-first enthusiasts who want premium hardware, that trade-off may be exactly the point. For everyone else, the Windows Legion Go Gen 2, a Steam Deck or the smaller SteamOS Legion Go S may offer a more convincing balance of compatibility, price and convenience.
