Fortnite Battle Royale Sprites are collectible battlefield helpers. Equip one to gain its own Sprite Power, then carry it to an Extraction Site (or use an eligible extraction Gizmo) to bank it in your Collection. If you are eliminated first, the unbanked Sprite remains on the island for another player. Once extracted, you can summon that Sprite in later matches and spend Sprite Dust on progression and upgrades.

Sprites, their powers, and the tools used with them are seasonal systems. The roster described in Epic’s v41.00, v41.20, and v41.30 material is not a permanent list, and current support says Sprites are unavailable in competitive modes.

What a Sprite is in Fortnite

Epic describes Sprites as “little helpers on the battlefield” that you can find and equip during a match to receive a special Sprite Power ability. In practical terms, a Sprite is both a temporary gameplay effect and a collectible. You get the power while the Sprite is equipped, but you only keep the Sprite for future matches after a successful extraction.

The mechanic creates a risk-and-reward loop:

  • Find: locate a Sprite during a Battle Royale match.
  • Choose: equip it when its effect suits your plan, or carry it while deciding when to commit.
  • Extract: reach an Extraction Site or use a documented extraction Gizmo.
  • Defend: survive the extraction process while other players can contest it.
  • Bank: interact with the arriving crate to add carried Sprites to your Collection.
  • Progress: earn Sprite Dust and level Sprites through exploration, eliminations, and extraction.

The exact powers, devices, eligible modes, and expiration rules can change with a season. Treat the following ability list as a v41-era reference rather than a timeless catalog.

What each Sprite Power does

Choose by the effect you need, not by a universal ranking. A mobility power can be more valuable during a rotation, while information or sustain may matter more when you are holding a building or preparing for a fight.

Sprite Power described in Epic’s v41.00 notes Best understood as
Earth Provides a chance of extra rare chest items. Loot improvement when you are still searching for gear.
Fire Creates a burst after you have dealt sufficient damage. Damage-triggered combat pressure.
Water Replenishes shields while you are in water, for you and nearby squad members. Squad sustain in or around water.
Duck Replenishes shields while you are emoting or jamming. A risky, activity-based shield refill.
Ghost Grants a short cloak after you reload. Brief concealment during a weapon cycle.
Demon Siphons health and shields when you get an elimination. Elimination sustain for aggressive players.
King Increases pickaxe damage. Faster harvesting or stronger pickaxe attacks.
Dream Grants a random item at each level and legendary loot at maximum level. Long-term progression and high-roll loot.
Punk Described by Epic as “Possibly nothing… or infinitely something.” An intentionally uncertain effect; do not assume a fixed benefit.
Zero Point Spawns a Shield Bubble Jr. when you use a healing item on yourself. Defensive cover tied to self-healing.

These effects have conditions. Water needs water, Duck needs emoting or jamming, Ghost needs a reload, Demon needs an elimination, and Zero Point requires a healing item used on yourself. Read the current in-game description before selecting a Sprite, because a later patch can alter a trigger or reward.

Additional v41-era Sprite types

Later v41 notes describe additional versions and effects:

Sprite Effect described in later v41 notes What to watch for
Air Improves sprinting and jumping and prevents fall damage. Useful for rotations and vertical movement; confirm the current movement bonuses in-game.
Batman Enables a midair Bat Cape glide and improves rare Sprite finds in chests. Combines traversal with better Sprite discovery.
Seven Reveals enemy footsteps. Information can help you avoid ambushes or start a fight on your terms.
Lootin’ Llama Can upgrade a weapon when you open ammo boxes. Its value depends on finding ammo boxes and having a weapon worth upgrading.
Peeky Peely Marks nearby rare variants or enemies carrying them, while also revealing your location. Provides information with an explicit exposure trade-off.

Epic’s updates do not establish this as an exhaustive, permanent roster. A Sprite can be vaulted, redesigned, renamed, or joined by another type. The current match inventory and the latest official update notes are the authority for the season you are playing.

How to use a Sprite during a match

1. Find one while exploring

Search the island normally, opening chests and exploring locations where the current season places Sprite encounters. Sprite discovery also contributes to leveling through exploration. Because no official source establishes a universal spawn rate, do not plan around a guaranteed number of Sprites per match.

2. Read the power and its condition

Before equipping, check what the effect does and what activates it. A shield effect that needs water is not equivalent to a cloak that follows a reload. Consider your loadout, the storm route, squad composition, and whether you can realistically meet the trigger.

3. Equip or carry it deliberately

Equipping activates the Sprite’s power for your character. You may carry a found Sprite while deciding when to equip it, but carrying it creates an extraction objective: you must survive long enough to bank it. Do not treat an unextracted find as permanent inventory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Keep the risk in mind

Elimination before banking leaves a found Sprite on the battlefield. Another player can then claim it. If the power is helping you survive, use it immediately; if the power is situational, weigh the benefit of waiting against the chance that a fight or storm rotation ends your run.

How to extract and bank a Sprite

Epic’s baseline v41.00 procedure is to carry the Sprite to an Extraction Site, activate the site, defend the pickup while a timer runs, and then interact with the arriving crate. The crate is the point at which the game banks carried Sprites into your Collection.

  1. Locate an Extraction Site. Use the map and the site marker available in the current match. Confirm that the Sprite is still in your inventory before committing to the trip.
  2. Reach the site. Plan for storm movement and enemy rotations. Arriving with healing, mobility, and ammunition gives you a better chance of completing the defense.
  3. Activate the site panel. Interact with the Extraction Site’s panel to start the extraction sequence.
  4. Defend during the timer. The process announces your objective and can attract opponents. Build cover, watch likely approaches, and coordinate squad roles rather than standing on the panel.
  5. Wait for the extraction crate. The crate becomes available after the timer completes. The objective is not finished merely because the panel was activated.
  6. Interact with the crate. Bank the carried and equipped Sprites when the crate arrives. Successful extraction adds them to your Collection and awards Sprite Dust.

GamesRadar’s procedural guide also describes activating the site panel, waiting through the timer, and interacting with the crate to bank carried and equipped Sprites. Epic’s instructions are the primary rule reference; the exact prompts and timing can change with the live season.

Defending an Extraction Site

  • Scout before activation: identify nearby cover, exits, and high ground.
  • Start when your squad is ready: activating alone can expose you without enough resources to hold the area.
  • Assign angles: one player can watch the approach while another protects the crate area and a third manages healing or builds.
  • Do not overextend: chasing an attacker away from the site can leave the objective undefended.
  • Plan the departure: once the crate is looted, rotate immediately if the storm or additional opponents make the area unsafe.

Using extraction Gizmos

Epic also describes a Portable Extractor that can extract an equipped Sprite from anywhere on the island. This changes the normal site-based route, but it does not remove the survival risk: you still need to use the tool before being eliminated and follow the current interaction prompt.

v41.20 and v41.30 notes add information about other Gizmos, including the Sprite Locator and Lucky Locator. Their functions and availability are seasonal. Check the current Gizmo Wheel and the current update notes before relying on a specific tool in a live match.

Gizmo rules and expiry

  • Epic’s v41 notes place Gizmos in unranked Battle Royale and Zero Build.
  • Gizmos cannot be traded or dropped when you are eliminated.
  • Gizmos expire at the end of the season.
  • The in-game timer shows the exact current expiration date.

Because an expiration date is displayed in-game, use that timer rather than an old guide’s calendar date. A tool that existed in one v41 update may be unavailable, renamed, or rebalanced in the next season.

How the Collection, levels, Dust, and Mastery work

Banked Sprites return in later matches

Extraction adds a Sprite to your Collection. That is what lets you summon an already extracted Sprite before a future match, rather than searching for the same Sprite again every time. The collection is therefore the persistent part of the system; a Sprite you merely found during the current match is not yet secured.

How Sprites level up

Epic says Sprite leveling comes from three activities:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Exploration: finding Sprites and opening chests.
  • Eliminations: earning eliminations while progressing the Sprite system.
  • Extraction: successfully banking Sprites.

Epic recommends pursuing a max-level Sprite over multiple matches. The official material does not establish a universal number of matches or a fixed cost that applies across seasons, so do not assume a guaranteed schedule.

What Sprite Dust is for

Successful extraction awards Sprite Dust. Epic describes Dust as the resource used to summon an already extracted Sprite before a match and to upgrade its powers and loot. The amount required can depend on the live progression system; check the current collection screen for the displayed cost.

Mastery and progression rewards

Extracting a max-level Sprite grants Mastery and progression rewards. Mastery is an additional reason to keep extracting a Sprite after you already understand its basic power. It also favors repeated, successful runs over grabbing a Sprite and taking unnecessary fights before reaching an extraction point.

Choosing the right Sprite for your plan

No Sprite is automatically best in every match. Compare three things: the gameplay effect, the condition that triggers it, and the risk of losing the unbanked Sprite.

Your priority Sprite effects to consider Decision question
Better loot Earth, Dream, Batman, Lootin’ Llama Will you open enough chests or ammo boxes for the benefit to matter before the next fight?
Movement and rotation Air, Batman Will improved traversal help you reach safety or take advantageous ground?
Defensive sustain Water, Duck, Zero Point Can you meet the effect’s condition without exposing yourself?
Combat pressure Fire, Demon, King Does your loadout reliably create the damage, elimination, or harvesting opportunities required?
Information Seven, Peeky Peely Can you exploit the information quickly, and can you tolerate the exposure that Peeky Peely creates?
Concealment Ghost Can you time a reload so the short cloak helps you disengage or reposition?

For a squad, avoid giving every player a power with the same condition. A Water user benefits from water access, while a Ghost user needs reload timing; combining complementary effects can cover more situations than stacking one narrow benefit.

Modes, seasons, and terminology you should not mix up

Competitive mode restriction

Epic’s current Fortnite Battle Royale support page says Sprites are not available in competitive modes. If you cannot find a Sprite or Sprite-related objective in Ranked or another competitive playlist, the absence may be an intentional mode rule rather than a bug.

Unranked Battle Royale and Zero Build

Epic’s v41.20 notes state that Gizmos are available only in unranked Battle Royale and Zero Build. That statement concerns the tools, while the support page separately addresses competitive availability. Playlist rules can be revised, so verify the mode description and the live UI after an update.

Seasonal expiration

Gizmos expire at season end, and the in-game timer provides the exact date. Expiry applies to the tool system described in the v41 notes; it should not be read as a promise that every banked Sprite disappears. Check the current collection and Gizmo screens for the season’s specific behavior.

Battle Royale Sprites versus the Creative Earth Sprite device

Fortnite Creative has an Earth Sprite device, which is a creator-configured interaction and not the Battle Royale Earth Sprite power. A Creative island creator can place the device and configure it to exchange weapons or other gear for loot. Settings can include team or class access and trade limits.

The Creative device does not use the Battle Royale find-equip-extract-collection loop. It does not make a Creative island a source of persistent Battle Royale Sprite powers, and a Battle Royale Earth Sprite does not automatically provide the Creative device’s trade behavior.

Common problems and practical fixes

“I found a Sprite but cannot bring it back to the lobby.”

Finding it is only the first step. Carry it to an Extraction Site, activate the panel, survive the timer, and interact with the crate. If you were eliminated before the crate interaction, the Sprite was left on the island and was not added to your Collection.

“The extraction site is active, but no crate is available.”

Wait for the timer to finish and watch the objective indicator. Activation starts the sequence; it does not instantly bank the Sprite. If the match has moved into a new phase, follow the current on-screen prompt rather than an older video’s timing.

“My Sprite power does not seem to work.”

  • Confirm that the Sprite is equipped, not merely carried.
  • Check the trigger: reload, water, emoting, self-healing, damage, or an elimination may be required.
  • Read the current ability text because a seasonal update may have changed the effect.
  • Remember that some effects are conditional or uncertain; Punk is explicitly not described as a guaranteed fixed benefit.

“I cannot find a Gizmo in my inventory.”

Check the playlist first. v41 notes restrict Gizmos to unranked Battle Royale and Zero Build, and an item may have expired with the season. The Gizmo Wheel and its expiration timer are more reliable than a screenshot from an earlier update.

“Can I drop or trade a Gizmo?”

Epic’s v41 notes say Gizmos cannot be traded or dropped when you are eliminated. Their availability is tied to the seasonal system, so plan to use a relevant tool during the current season rather than treating it as permanent tradable loot.

A safe, repeatable extraction routine

  1. Search until you find a Sprite whose effect matches your loadout or rotation plan.
  2. Equip it only after checking its activation condition.
  3. Open nearby chests and pursue eliminations when doing so does not jeopardize the extraction run, since both activities contribute to progression.
  4. Mark an Extraction Site and rotate with enough time to activate it before the storm closes.
  5. Scout the site, start the panel with your squad ready, and defend the timer from cover.
  6. Interact with the crate as soon as it becomes available.
  7. Confirm the Sprite appears in your Collection and note the Sprite Dust awarded.
  8. Use the collection screen before a later match to summon or upgrade the extracted Sprite if the current system allows it.

This routine separates temporary match power from permanent collection progress: equip for the immediate benefit, extract for future access, and spend Dust only after deciding which Sprite supports your preferred playstyle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I keep a Sprite if I am eliminated after finding it?

No. An unbanked Sprite remains on the battlefield when its carrier is eliminated. It becomes part of your Collection only after you complete an extraction and interact with the crate, or use an eligible extraction Gizmo successfully.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are Sprites available in Ranked or other competitive playlists?

Epic’s current support guidance says Sprites are unavailable in competitive modes. The exact availability of related Gizmos is also playlist- and season-dependent.

Is Fortnite’s Creative Earth Sprite the same as the Battle Royale Sprite?

No. The Creative Earth Sprite is a creator-placed device that exchanges configured gear for loot. Battle Royale Sprites are collectible helpers with powers, extraction, Dust, and Collection progression.

The Bottom Line

Use a Sprite for its immediate conditional power, but treat extraction as the real objective: only a banked Sprite joins your Collection for future matches. Check the current mode, Gizmo Wheel, ability text, and expiration timer because Epic changes this system between seasons.
