Fortnite’s October 1, 2026 update was v42.30. Epic’s release notes focus mainly on UEFN creator tools, while its separate Fortnitemares announcement outlines seasonal content for Battle Royale, Horde Rush, and Reload. Epic scheduled downtime for the update from 08:00 UTC; its status history records maintenance completed at 10:31 UTC.
What changed in Fortnite v42.30?
Epic’s Fortnite Ecosystem Updates and Release Notes, published October 1, describes v42.30 as adding a conversations template for LLM-powered characters, non-weapon carryable items, in-editor Content Pre-Checks, and Creator Portal performance benchmarks. It also lists the Witch Broom and Slap Candy Corn as new content.

New tools and analytics for creators
- Conversations template: A playable introduction to Epic’s conversations feature, intended for building characters with distinct personalities and voices that can talk, react, respond to player actions, and influence gameplay. The example has players negotiate with NPC buyers in a used-car sales scenario.
- Carryable items that are not weapons: The new held-item template uses a torch as its default mesh and icon. Creators can adapt it for objects such as lanterns, tools, or banners.
- Creator Portal benchmarks: Island performance can be compared with percentile goals for islands in the same genre. Metrics include click-through rate, five-minute bounce rate, average session length, and day-one and day-seven retention. Epic’s notes name the metrics but give no benchmark results or specific percentile values.
- Content Pre-Checks: These in-editor checks flag potential content violations earlier in development. Epic says they are informational: they do not stop creators from building or publishing and do not replace the moderation review performed at publish.
Other ecosystem content and technical changes
The release notes also list the Chapter 6 Season 4 Witch Broom, Slap Candy Corn, Exotic Easy Ride Pumpkin Launcher, and Lavish Lair set. Slap Candy Corn applies the Slap effect when consumed. These are Fortnite and creator-ecosystem content changes, not physical products.
For creators, the notes additionally mention Verse paths appearing in more editor locations for new projects, possible code updates related to ability templates and Verse APIs, and a transition involving the Experimental Verse skeletal-animation system toward a replacement API. Epic also says UEFN source assets can be uploaded to Fab, with publishing set to open October 15, according to the October 1 release notes.

What Fortnitemares content did Epic announce for players?
Epic’s separate Fortnitemares announcement covers seasonal content across Battle Royale, Horde Rush, and Reload. It names Freaky Fields and Nightmare Neighborhood, Freddy Krueger’s Nightmare weapon, the Bonerattler SMG, and returning weapons including the Wood Stake Shotgun and Pumpkin Launcher.
The announcement also describes cursed cartridge Overrides that can grant effects such as invisibility while sprinting, extra damage at low health, or disguising a squad as Halloween props. It mentions animatronic bosses from Five Nights at Freddy’s. These are event highlights, not a complete competitive balance or loot-pool changelog.

Horde Rush, Reload, and collaborations
Epic said Horde Rush was returning and that an updated Nitemare Island would arrive in Reload on October 8 alongside the Stranger Things and Squid Grounds maps. Its October 1 article listed licensed character outfits and accessories planned through October and said Five Nights at Freddy’s outfits were already in the Shop at the time of that announcement. Shop availability can change, so that announcement does not confirm what is currently available.
When was Fortnite down for the October 1 update?
Epic’s status history lists v42.30 downtime as scheduled for October 1 at 08:00 UTC, with matchmaking disabled 30 minutes beforehand. The history records maintenance as completed at 10:31 UTC. That is the recorded maintenance window, not a guarantee of current service status.

What happened to Rocket Racing creator islands on October 1?
Separately from v42.30, Epic had announced in its September 17 v42.20 release notes that Rocket Racing would leave Fortnite on October 1. On that date, UEFN islands made with Rocket Racing templates became unpublished and unplayable, and creators could no longer publish updates to those islands. Epic said the Vehicle Locker was unaffected and described migrated developer tools for creating racing games without the template.
