If Fortnite voice chat is not working, first check Epic’s server status, make sure you and your friends are in the same voice channel, and confirm chat is allowed for your account. Then check console party-chat settings, microphone permissions, and network restrictions. The right fix depends on your platform and account.
1. Check whether Fortnite voice chat is having a service issue
Before changing device or router settings, check Epic’s Fortnite voice-chat troubleshooting page for known issues and the Epic Games Server Status page for outages. If Epic reports an issue affecting voice chat, it may resolve when the service issue is fixed.

2. Confirm the voice channel and audio controls
Fortnite has two voice-chat channels. Party chat connects members of your party across Fortnite and supported Epic apps. Game chat connects players in the same island instance when the island creator supports it. Open the Social menu or profile controls and select the channel used by the people you want to talk to. Players on different platforms may need to use the appropriate shared channel.

- Raise voice-chat volume. Epic recommends at least 50% for audibility.
- If you recently switched devices, check where your voice session is active. Opening Fortnite on another device can prompt voice to move there; Party Voice can also continue in the background on mobile.

3. Check whether your account is allowed to chat
A headset or microphone setting cannot override an account-level restriction. A cabined account cannot use voice or text chat until the required parent or guardian consent process is completed. In Fortnite’s parental controls, chat must be set to an allowed option rather than Nobody.
Epic’s troubleshooting guidance describes age-based options: under 10, Friends Only; ages 10–12, Friends Only or Friends and Teammates; and age 13 or older, Friends Only, Friends and Teammates, or Everyone, subject to parental permission. Epic’s current communications guide says chat defaults to Off for users who indicate they are under 18, settings can be changed unless parental controls restrict them, and children under 10 have a Friends Only maximum. Check the current Epic account and parental-control settings for the player; do not try to bypass family restrictions.

4. Fix console voice-chat conflicts
Xbox
Xbox Party Chat can take priority over Fortnite voice chat. Epic says you must leave Xbox Party Chat to use Fortnite chat, even if nobody else is in the party. To switch, open Parties & chats, select the party, press the View button, and choose Switch to game chat. For cross-platform chat, also review Xbox privacy and online safety controls for cross-network play and voice/text communication.

Check that Mute Game Voice Chat is disabled under Sound, then restart Fortnite. Epic notes that voice chat may be temporarily interrupted while Fortnite loads and return after loading finishes. PlayStation Party Chat also prevents Fortnite voice chat from working; leave the console party to use Fortnite chat.

Nintendo Switch
Epic documents a specific issue case: a 3.5 mm headset may cause voice-chat trouble while the Switch is docked. Its suggested alternatives are a USB receiver, a USB headset, or a USB-to-3.5 mm adapter. These are troubleshooting options, not guaranteed fixes.
5. Check microphone and audio settings on PC or Mac
Windows PC
- In Fortnite, verify the voice-chat setting and whether Push-to-Talk is enabled. If it is, use the assigned key while speaking.
- In Windows sound settings, select the headset or speakers you are using as the default playback device and the correct microphone as the recording device.
- Allow Fortnite to access the microphone in Windows privacy settings, and install available Windows updates.
- If chat options are restricted by parental controls, changing ordinary audio settings will not remove that restriction.
Mac
Allow Fortnite to use the microphone in macOS privacy settings. If permission is denied, Fortnite cannot capture your voice through the microphone.

6. Check network restrictions if settings look right
If the channel, account, device, and microphone settings are correct but voice still will not connect, Epic’s troubleshooting guidance points to network configuration. It identifies XMPP and lists ports 5222 and 433 as required for its voice-chat connection. Check whether your firewall or network blocks them. Epic also suggests checking router SIP-ALG, DNS, and network configuration; on Xbox, it additionally lists UPnP and NAT checks.

Epic also warns that VoIP may be restricted by an ISP or in a region. Verify whether a restriction applies to your connection before treating the headset or Fortnite installation as faulty.
