Epic Games has reportedly delayed an unannounced game being developed as part of its Disney collaboration and asked developers to use more AI tools. Bloomberg reported the change on October 12, 2026, citing people familiar with the project; it is not an official announcement from Epic or Disney. No revised release date or definitive reason for the delay has been established.
What was delayed—and what was announced in 2024
The report concerns a specific, unnamed game within the Disney–Epic relationship, not the entire Fortnite collaboration. That distinction matters because the original announcement did not set a release date for one named game. In February 2024, Epic described a broader plan for an “all-new open, persistent and social universe” connected to Fortnite, featuring characters and stories from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, Avatar and other franchises. Epic said the environment would be powered by Unreal Engine. Disney also announced a $1.5 billion investment to acquire an equity stake in Epic alongside the multiyear project.

“Disney metaverse” is often used as shorthand for that broad concept. It should not be mistaken for the title of the game in Bloomberg’s report, or evidence that the whole proposed universe has been delayed. The available information does not identify the game or explain how it fits into the larger plan.

What Bloomberg reported about the delay and AI
Bloomberg’s October 12 report, as relayed by Yahoo Finance, said Epic delayed an upcoming game in its Disney collaboration and told developers to use more AI tools. The report attributed its information to people familiar with the project and included a statement from Epic communications director Jake Jones: “We’re embracing AI-accelerated development, led by Epic developers who are the visionaries and creative drivers for everything we do.”

- Darkfire Bundle: Including 3 outfits (with LEGO Styles) and back blings; Dark Power Chord, Dark Six String, Molten Omen, Molten Battle Shroud, Shadow Ark, Shadow Ark Wings, plus 3 wraps, 3 dual-wielding pickaxes, and an emote!
- Deep Freeze Bundle: Cool off with the Deep Freeze set and 1,000 V-Bucks. Includes the frostbite outfit (with LEGO Style), freezing point back bling, chill-axe pickaxe, and cold front glider.
- The Fortnite – Darkfire & Ice Bundle includes 10+ cosmetics and 1,000 V-Bucks!
That statement signals Epic’s general support for AI-assisted development, but it does not establish which tools are being used on this game, what work they perform, or whether AI caused the delay. The reporting describes a production direction, not a confirmed explanation for the schedule change. Epic has not publicly identified the game or announced a replacement date in the information available here.
Is the Disney Fortnite project canceled?
The report describes a delay, not a cancellation. The sources do not establish that the delayed game has been canceled, but they also do not provide a confirmed launch date or a detailed schedule for the broader universe. It would be inaccurate to treat the reported delay as proof that every part of Disney’s Fortnite plans has stopped.

Disney continued to announce Fortnite creator activity in 2026. In June, it said The Simpsons would join Fortnite’s IP Partner Program and that an official UEFN-ready toolkit was planned for later in the year. Disney also reported that nearly 8 million players entered community-built Star Wars islands during their first 72 hours after the toolkit launch. It reported 6.53 million plays for Galactic Siege and 3.37 million for Escape Vader in their first six days. These are figures reported by Disney, not independent measurements. Creator-program activity shows ongoing work in Fortnite, but it does not confirm the delayed game’s schedule.

In an official employee memo on March 24, 2026, Epic said its announced layoffs were not related to AI: “Since it’s a thing now, I should note that the layoffs aren’t related to AI.” The memo discussed reduced Fortnite engagement beginning in 2025, spending exceeding revenue, and broader industry challenges. Epic also named Fortnite experiences and developer tools as priorities. That statement applies to the March layoffs; it neither confirms nor explains the October report about the Disney game.

Epic has separately described an experimental AI feature for Fortnite creators called Conversations. In April 2026, the company said islands using Conversations could not yet be published. Epic said Google Gemini 3.1 Flash-Lite processed audio inputs and generated text, while ElevenLabs converted responses to speech. This is evidence of an AI experiment for creator-made characters, not evidence that the delayed Disney game uses those services or the same approach.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What remains unknown
- The game’s name, gameplay, platforms, and original or revised release window.
- The specific reason for the reported delay.
- Which AI tools, if any, are being used on the game and how they affect its production.
- Whether or how the game’s schedule affects other parts of the Disney–Epic universe.
Because the underlying Bloomberg page was not directly accessible and the project-specific details have not been confirmed in an official Epic announcement, the delay and AI direction should remain attributed to Bloomberg’s reporting rather than presented as settled company disclosures.
