Yes—but in a different role from Fortnite’s headline competitive modes. Save the World remains an official, supported cooperative PvE campaign. Epic made it free to play on April 16, 2026, and its current Fortnite listing includes recent update notes. Its main story is complete, however, and Epic said in 2020 that it would slow the pace of new content. That history helps explain why some players call it forgotten, even though the mode is still active.
What is Fortnite: Save the World?
Save the World is a cooperative PvE action-building campaign. Players fight monster hordes, explore destructible environments, gather materials to craft weapons, and build forts and trap tunnels to defend objectives. Heroes provide the progression system, with four classes: Soldiers, Ninjas, Outlanders, and Constructors. Epic says you can play alone or with up to three friends.
That makes Save the World a distinct part of Fortnite’s lineup: a campaign focused on teamwork, preparation, and defending against enemies controlled by the game, rather than competing against other players to survive a match. This is a description of what the mode offers, not a claim that Epic has formally defined its place in the franchise that way. Epic’s Save the World listing describes the mode and its current access information.
Is Save the World still active?
Yes. Epic’s current listing includes update notes for v42.30, v42.20, and v42.10. The notes cover a returning questline and Hero, returning seasonal content, a Ventures season, Dungeons reopening, a mission rework, and fixes. That is evidence of ongoing maintenance and seasonal activity as of the listing’s October 2026 snapshot.

It does not establish how large the audience is, whether updates arrive as often as they do for Battle Royale, or what Epic plans to add in the long term. A live activity counter on the listing can fluctuate, so it should not be treated as a durable measure of the mode’s popularity. Epic’s update notes demonstrate that Save the World is not discontinued; they do not guarantee future expansion.
Why do players call it Fortnite’s forgotten mode?
The reputation has a clear historical basis. In a June 30, 2020 development update, Epic said Save the World’s main story was complete and that the pace of new content would slow. The plan described recurring seasonal structures for Ventures and existing events, with new quests and Heroes arriving more slowly.

- Battle against over 50 players simultaneously in a massive multiplayer playground—over 20 players on Xbox One.
- Compete in an all-out mass start race—collide, grind, and fight your way to the finish
- Customize your character to show off your style to your friends or show up the competition.
- Bike, ski, snowboard, or wingsuit through a seamless open world in Career mode or multiplayer events.
- Go wild on the heights of iconic US national parks like Yosemite, Zion, and Bryce Canyon.
That 2020 update also said Save the World would remain a premium experience rather than become free to play. That part of the plan is no longer current: Epic later announced a free-to-play transition, effective April 16, 2026. The completed story and slower content pace help explain the neglected reputation, but they do not mean the mode has since been discontinued.
Is Save the World free to play, and who gets V-Bucks?
Save the World became free to play on April 16, 2026, according to Epic’s March 11, 2026 announcement. The current Fortnite listing describes it as free to play.

- Ghost Recon just got an all-new jungle warfare experience. In Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Island Thunder, you lead an elite team of U.S. Army Green Berets in a mission to stop a drug-funded warlord from sabotaging Cuba's free elections. Island Thunder takes you deep into the heart of Cuba with eight missions, plus five desert missions you can download via Xbox Live. Compete in 12 expansive maps against your friends on split-screen multiplayer, system link, and enhanced Xbox Live play.
Founder V-Bucks earnings are a legacy benefit, not a general reward for every player who joins after the free-to-play change. Epic said Founders would continue earning V-Bucks through Daily Quests, Mission Alerts, Storm Shield Defense Missions, and existing Challenges. Do not assume that a new player receives those Founder rewards.
Where can you play Save the World?
Epic’s current listing names PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch 2, and certain cloud services. It says the mode is unavailable on smartphones and tablets, including through cloud gaming, and on the original Nintendo Switch. Platform support can change; check the live listing for the current availability details before installing or subscribing to a cloud service.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does Save the World still have a place in Fortnite?
It does if Fortnite is understood as more than a competitive battle royale. Save the World offers a different loop: build defenses, craft gear, develop Heroes, and work with a team against PvE enemies. Its completed main story and slower content cadence make it a different kind of ongoing experience from a mode whose appeal is driven by frequent competitive or social changes. Epic’s current update feed shows continued seasonal and maintenance activity, but it is not evidence of equal investment across Fortnite’s modes.
For players who want cooperative objective defense and long-term collection and progression, that distinct offering still has value. Players looking mainly for a fresh, continuously expanding campaign should factor in Epic’s 2020 statement that the main story was complete; the recent updates show seasonal material and fixes, not a promise of a new story or a long-term roadmap.
