The best Fortress Saga team for a beginner is usually the strongest combination you can build from heroes you already own—not a fixed five-hero list. Start with a reliable damage dealer, then add survival or healing and, where possible, control or buffs. Your target activity matters too: stage-clearing, boss fights, and PvP can reward different heroes.
How to choose the best heroes for beginners and free-to-play teams
Use these checks in order before spending scarce upgrade materials or summons:
- Start with your roster. A highly ranked hero you do not own cannot help your team now. Pocket Gamer’s version 2.1.02 guide notes that beginners may not have access to every top pick and may need to upgrade lower-rarity heroes. Its advice is to invest in useful heroes you have, rather than treating the tier list as a required roster. Pocket Gamer’s hero tier list was updated September 16, 2026.
- Cover complementary roles. Look for damage alongside healing, shields, durability, control, or buffs. A team of individually strong damage dealers can be less useful if it cannot stay alive or manage enemy groups.
- Match the activity. Ask whether you are building for PvE stages, PvE bosses, or PvP. Kamigame’s Japanese ranking, updated October 6, 2026, separates those modes and grades heroes differently; one overall ranking can hide those differences. Kamigame’s mode-specific rankings are useful as a separate reference, not as a direct conversion to Pocket Gamer’s broad tiers.
- Consider realistic investment. Favor heroes you can improve with the resources and duplicates you can reasonably obtain. A community beginner-draw suggestion, for example, considers both missing heroes and whether a duplicate would bring a hero to two stars, but that is one player’s approach rather than a universal rule.
- Check the guide’s date and context. Pocket Gamer says its global-facing list adapts information from the more mature Japanese server. Rankings can shift with patches and may differ across regions or ranking methods, so treat a tier as a starting point, not a guarantee.
Strong heroes to build around if you have them
Pocket Gamer places Violet, Styria, and Malleus in S+ in its September 16, 2026 version 2.1.02 list. Their described strengths cover different jobs, which makes them useful examples for thinking about team balance. That does not establish that the three together are a tested or universally best team.
| Hero | Described role | Why a beginner might consider them |
|---|---|---|
| Violet | Summon-based damage | Her Shadow Soldiers fight alongside the team, and stats granted by allies can also benefit the summons. This makes team buffs relevant to her damage setup. |
| Styria | Support and survivability | She heals and shields, and her passive increases team HP. She can help a developing roster stay alive. |
| Malleus | Area damage, grouping, and Machina buffs | His skill targets dense enemy clusters and pulls enemies together. He can also buff allies with the Machina trait. |
Use the role descriptions to decide what your roster lacks. If you already have damage covered but struggle to survive, Styria’s support may fill a more urgent gap than another attacker. If grouped enemies are slowing stage progress, Malleus’s area damage and grouping may be more relevant. Violet’s summons can benefit from stats supplied by teammates, so consider what support and buffs you can pair with her.

A free-to-play example—and what not to assume
A May 11, 2026 Korean community post recommends Lan Hua and Tien for a beginner selection draw. The poster praises Lan Hua for stage clearing but says she needs a tank’s protection because she is deployed as a damage dealer. Tien is described as providing onboard buffs while approaching a damage dealer’s output. The post also says neither depends heavily on a unique weapon, although a weapon still helps.
This is a single community recommendation that the author labels personal opinion—not an official beginner route or a current global consensus. It can still suggest useful questions: does the attacker have protection, and does the other hero contribute something beyond raw damage? The same post suggests choosing a missing hero from its top two tiers or a duplicate that would reach two stars, and warns that gems become scarce after beginner missions. Treat those points as that poster’s advice, not a promise about every account or version.

Why you should not follow one tier list blindly
Tier labels are only comparable when their date, roster, region, and mode align. Pocket Gamer’s list is version 2.1.02 and says it adapts Japanese-server information for global players. Kamigame’s newer October 6, 2026 page separates stage PvE, boss PvE, and PvP; its ratings should not be flattened into a single mode-free order. For example, it identifies Lumiere as a pickup-banner hero and gives separate grades by mode.
Lists can also differ over time and method. MobileMatters’ August 2026 ranking names Winter, Ruingaladh, Ravia, and Elizabeth as S-tier, illustrating why an older list or a list with a different scope may not match a current mode-specific recommendation. Use rankings to identify candidates, then decide based on your own roster and the activity you are trying to clear.
Should a beginner reroll?
Pocket Gamer advises that rerolling is not worth the lost progress because the best heroes are not initially accessible. That is the guide’s recommendation, not a game rule. For most beginners, the practical alternative is to build useful heroes already obtained and reassess as the roster grows, rather than restarting solely to chase a tier-list name.
