What hero roles mean in Fortress Saga
Fortress Saga is an idle RPG built around a moving fortress, summonable heroes, and ongoing auto and AFK progression. CookApps describes broad team functions that include defenders, dealers, tanks, and support, but does not provide a full official role glossary. Treat those labels as useful shorthand, not necessarily as exclusive categories: a hero’s skills may contribute in more than one way.
For team building, look at the concrete effect a hero brings to a fight. A damage dealer may also disrupt enemies; a support hero may improve durability through healing, shields, or passive bonuses. The skill description and actual battle contribution are more informative than a role label on its own.
What to look for in a hero’s skills
These examples come from Pocket Gamer’s hero guide, which was updated for version 2.1.02 on September 16, 2026. They illustrate battle functions, not a complete official role map or proof that a particular stat is always best.

- Zelos: deals damage while applying fear-based crowd control, can stun bosses, and has sustain—showing that damage and control can coexist in one kit.
- Bernhard: deals area damage, reduces enemy defense, and taunts—combining group offense, an enemy debuff, and threat redirection.
These skill descriptions suggest practical comparison questions: Does the hero hit groups or a single target? Do they keep the team alive? Can they interrupt, frighten, stun, or taunt enemies? Do they provide a passive benefit to allies? Compare alternatives by the jobs their skills perform rather than assuming that every hero fits one narrow role.
How to interpret and upgrade hero stats
The official Google Play listing confirms that players can enhance heroes’ combat attributes and upgrade weapons. It does not identify a complete set of stats or explain their formulas, scaling, or upgrade priorities. That means there is no supported universal rule here such as “always build this stat on every dealer” or “this stat is best for every tank.”

Use the current in-game hero screen and skill descriptions to connect an attribute to the hero you are building. Check what the attribute changes, whether the hero’s skills benefit from it, and whether improving it supports the job you want that hero to do. If the game does not explain a stat clearly, avoid treating a community label or an older tier-list recommendation as a verified formula.

When choosing between heroes, compare the contribution each one adds to the lineup:

- Offense: whether the hero is better suited to damage against groups or a single target.
- Survivability: whether they provide healing, shields, protection, or another way to keep allies fighting.
- Control and disruption: whether their skills stun, frighten, taunt, or otherwise affect enemy actions.
- Team-wide value: whether passive buffs or debuffs improve the rest of the lineup, not just the hero’s own damage.
These are practical comparison axes inferred from the cited skill examples, not an official, exhaustive classification system. A hero’s value can also depend on the fight and the other heroes available, so a tier-list placement should not replace checking the skills for your situation.
How current are role and tier-list claims?
As of October 7, 2026, Google Play’s CookApps listing reports version 2.1.15, updated September 29, 2026. Pocket Gamer’s guide is useful for its skill examples, but its stated version is 2.1.02 and its September 16 update predates the current store listing version. Its rankings are editorial judgments, not official placements or a fully current ranking for version 2.1.15.

A community wiki search excerpt groups some frontline heroes as Dealer, Bruiser, or Tank and suggests that most frontline or melee heroes cannot target Aero units. The pages could not be verified directly, so treat those claims as leads to check in the current game rather than established rules.

CookApps’ Google Play listing for Fortress Saga describes summoning, collecting, and combining heroes, enhancing combat attributes, upgrading weapons, and building team synergies. It supports the broad roles and upgrade activities described above, but does not provide the detailed numerical stat formulas or role-by-role priorities needed to prescribe an optimal build.
