What the first gameplay trailer showed
Playground Games presented the first gameplay reveal during Xbox Developer_Direct on January 22, 2026. The footage introduced Japan as the setting and featured two vehicles: the 2025 GR GT Prototype and the 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser. These are details confirmed by the publisher, rather than conclusions from independent gameplay testing. Playground Games’ reveal set out the initial showcase.
Design Director Torben Ellert described the setting’s appeal to Xbox Wire: “Japan is such an exciting, interesting, intriguing location that many people have wanted from [the Horizon] franchise for a long time, that we’ve wanted to do for a long time,”
How Japan shapes the game world
The official feature overview spans Tokyo streets and mountain roads. Named city landmarks include Shibuya Crossing, Ginko Avenue and Tokyo Tower. The roads also draw on Tokyo’s C1 loop and mountain passes including Mt. Haruna and Bandai Azuma. The Forza feature overview describes these locations and the wider setting.

Seasons return with changes to scenery, crops, foliage, weather and soundscapes. The feature overview describes more pronounced seasonal variation than in Mexico, while alpine snow remains present throughout the year.

More awareness from the driver’s seat
Car Proximity Radar is an optional aid that indicates nearby vehicles and blind spots. It is intended to be useful in cockpit, hood or bumper camera views. AutoDrive and customizable High Contrast mode are also among the accessibility additions named in the reveal, alongside features carried forward from earlier games.

Customization and presentation
Other announced details include updated car and environment audio, the ability to paint liveries on windows, different front and rear rims, cosmetic tire wear, and steering animations with up to 540 degrees of rotation. These are publisher-described features, not a guarantee that every vehicle or situation uses each option in the same way.
Activities and custom events
Xbox Wire’s preview describes time-limited Aftermarket Cars sold at cheaper-than-normal prices, collectibles placed around Japan, and a Journal for collecting photographs of landmarks and hotspots. These give players activities beyond driving races and exploring the map.

Release status, platforms and access
Forza Horizon 6 launched on May 19, 2026, for Xbox Series X|S and PC. Playground Games says it is playable on PC through the Xbox app and Steam, and through Xbox Cloud Gaming on supported devices. The Standard Edition is included with an active Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass membership, according to the launch announcement. Membership and cloud availability depend on the applicable service and supported device.

Playground Games reports “over 550 cars”; this is the publisher’s figure. Xbox lists Playground Games as developer, Xbox Game Studios as publisher, and the genre as open-world racing.
The official Forza page describes the PS5 version as coming later in 2026. That is a release window, not a confirmed launch date, and may change. For digital purchases on Xbox or Microsoft Store for Windows PC, Xbox Play Anywhere applies; Steam purchases are excluded. The feature overview says cross-play and cross-save span Xbox Series X|S, Xbox PC, PS5 and Steam. Check the current platform and service details before buying if either affects your decision.

Which version or access route makes sense?
The practical choice depends on your platform, whether you already have an eligible Game Pass membership, and whether you want Play Anywhere or cross-save. The launch announcement confirms the Standard Edition’s Game Pass inclusion; the available material here does not establish current edition-by-edition contents or current subscription terms.
