These are different kinds of racing games rather than interchangeable circuit racers. GT7 is the practical purchase for a PS5 owner today. FH6 is the future choice for someone who specifically wants a Japan-set open world and accepts that its PS5 performance and hands-on feel cannot yet be judged.

Availability and release timing
Gran Turismo 7 is playable on PS5 now
Gran Turismo 7 already has a PS5 edition, so there is no release-date risk in choosing it. You can buy the game and start its track-focused content immediately. The official product page currently identifies the product iteration as SPEC III, which began with an update on December 4, 2025. Updates can change the live feature set, so check the current in-game version and product details when you purchase.

Forza Horizon 6 arrives later
Playground Games announced on October 8, 2026 that the PS5 launch for Forza Horizon 6 Standard and Deluxe Editions is scheduled for January 26, 2027. Premium Edition early access begins five days earlier, on January 21, 2027. The PlayStation Store lists the same January 26 release date.
A PS5 disc is planned through supporting retailers, and PS5 players can preorder. A preorder is a commitment to a future launch, not access to a playable PS5 version today. If you need a game for this week, FH6 cannot fill that role.

How the two games are structured
Forza Horizon 6: an open-world driving adventure
Forza Horizon 6 is announced as an open-world game set in Japan. Its loop combines driving around the world, exploration, festival events, car meets, multiplayer activities and creative tools. The PlayStation listing also highlights custom event creation in Japan, allowing players to build activities rather than only selecting fixed races.
The festival framework matters because progression is tied to moving through a broad setting and its activities, not simply selecting a sequence of closed circuits. You can treat the world as a place to explore between events, meet other players, and create or discover custom challenges. That makes FH6 a stronger match for players who want a driving playground and a sense of place.

Gran Turismo 7: organized racing on tracks
Gran Turismo 7 is built around circuit and track-route racing. Its official product information reports more than 90 track routes, dynamic weather and a collection of more than 400 cars. Sport Mode provides Daily Races and an annual Online Championship for players who want structured competition.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
GT7’s appeal is therefore concentrated in the race itself: choosing a car, learning a route, improving against opponents and participating in organized online events. It does not offer the same open-world exploration structure announced for FH6. If driving from one activity to another across a fictionalized Japan is the main attraction, GT7 is solving a different problem.
Why “which is more realistic?” is the wrong first question
The available product information establishes each game’s format, activities and features, but it does not provide a controlled PS5 comparison of handling, physics, graphics or driving realism. Choose based first on structure: open-world exploration versus track racing. A claim that one will definitely feel better on a particular controller or wheel would go beyond the established information, especially before FH6’s PS5 release.
Progression, activities and what you actually do
What FH6 emphasizes
- Festival progression: activities are organized around a festival setting rather than only a menu of races.
- Exploration: the Japanese open world is a destination to drive through, not merely a backdrop for a single lap.
- Car meets and multiplayer activities: social driving is part of the announced feature set.
- Creative tools: custom event creation lets players make activities in the world.
- Cross-platform progression: announced cross-save is intended to connect supported versions across platforms.
This combination suits a player who enjoys changing pace: a race, an exploratory drive, a player-created event or a social meet can all be part of the same session. The exact balance of activities, progression speed and PS5 implementation should be judged after launch rather than assumed from the announcement.
What GT7 emphasizes
- Track routes: the official page reports more than 90 routes, with dynamic weather listed as part of the PS5 product.
- Car collection: the product page reports more than 400 cars.
- Sport Mode: Daily Races and an annual Online Championship provide recurring organized competition.
- AI competition: PS5 includes Gran Turismo Sophy, an AI racing agent created through collaboration between Polyphony Digital, Sony AI and Sony Interactive Entertainment.
- PS VR2: the PS5 version supports Sony’s PS VR2 headset.
GT7 is the better fit when your idea of progression is improving on tracks, expanding a garage and entering repeatable competitive events. Its strengths are concentrated in the racing framework rather than free-roaming discovery.

| Game | Published content figure | What the figure describes | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Forza Horizon 6 | More than 550 real-world cars | Cars listed for the PS5 product | Figure comes from the 2026 PlayStation Store listing and uses “more than,” not an exact total. |
| Gran Turismo 7 | Over 400 cars | Cars listed on the official product page | Figure uses “over,” not an exact total. |
| Gran Turismo 7 | Over 90 track routes | Track routes with dynamic weather listed on the product page | It is a route count, not a direct equivalent to FH6’s open-world map or event count. |
FH6 has the larger published car figure, but that does not establish that it has better content for every player. The two pages count different things in games with different purposes: FH6 pairs a large garage with an open world and custom events, while GT7 pairs its garage with named track routes and organized racing. A player who wants one more car may value the FH6 figure; a player who wants circuits and route variety may find GT7’s track count more relevant.
Neither product page supplies an exact final total in the figures above. “More than 550” and “over 400” should not be rewritten as fixed numbers, and they should not be treated as a laboratory measure of quality.
Online multiplayer, PlayStation Plus and cross-platform play
Forza Horizon 6 on PS5
The PlayStation Store listing says console online multiplayer requires a separately sold PlayStation Plus subscription. Playground Games also advertises cross-play and cross-save across Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, PlayStation 5 and Steam. That makes FH6 the clearer choice for a household or friend group spread across those platforms, assuming the announced feature works as described at launch.
Gran Turismo 7 on PS5
Gran Turismo’s online manual states that PlayStation Plus is required for Sport Mode and Lobby. Those are the cited online features, so budget for the subscription if competitive Daily Races, the Online Championship or lobby sessions are central to your plan.

Both games therefore have an ongoing online-cost consideration on PS5. FH6’s announced cross-platform features are a meaningful differentiator, while GT7’s online identity is tied to its own Sport Mode and Lobby ecosystem.
PS VR2 and artificial intelligence
GT7 has the confirmed headset advantage
Gran Turismo 7 supports PS VR2 on PS5. If you already own the headset or specifically want a racing game designed to use it, that confirmed feature can settle the decision without comparing car totals.
GT7’s PS5 page also identifies Gran Turismo Sophy, described as a next-generation racing AI agent developed by Polyphony Digital, Sony AI and Sony Interactive Entertainment. The feature gives GT7 a named AI element in its PS5 product specification, although the cited material does not provide a direct benchmark comparing Sophy with FH6 opponents.

FH6 PS5 VR status is not established
The cited official FH6 PS5 announcements do not announce VR support. That means you should not buy FH6 expecting a confirmed PS VR2 mode. It also does not prove that VR support can never be added; it only means the feature is not established in the launch information available here.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat is still unknown about Forza Horizon 6 on PS5
Because the PS5 edition has not released, several practical questions remain unanswered by the confirmed announcements:
- PS5 frame-rate targets and resolution modes.
- Loading behavior and visual performance in the open world.
- The final feel of controller handling and driving assists on PS5.
- Wheel and pedal compatibility for particular models.
- How the launch build compares technically with the Xbox and PC versions.
- Review consensus and long-term online stability.
Playground Games says Panic Button is developing the PS5 version in collaboration with Playground Games and Turn 10 Studios. That identifies the development partnership, not a performance guarantee. Do not use an Xbox or PC video, a preorder page or a feature list as proof of PS5 frame rate, resolution or control quality.
If those technical details determine your purchase, the sensible approach is to wait for the PS5 release and confirmed specifications. If the open-world concept itself is the deciding factor and you are comfortable buying before launch, treat the purchase as a future release commitment rather than a known hands-on product.

Choose Gran Turismo 7 now if you need a game immediately
GT7 is the only option in this comparison that is already available on PS5. It gives you immediate access to track racing, its reported car collection, more than 90 track routes, Sport Mode and PS VR2 support. This is the straightforward answer for a player buying a game for the current weekend, a new PS5 owner building a racing library, or anyone unwilling to wait until January 2027.
Choose GT7 if organized competition is the attraction
Sport Mode’s Daily Races and annual Online Championship are explicit parts of GT7’s product description. Add the PS Plus requirement for Sport Mode and Lobby to your decision. The game is aimed at players who want recurring, structured online racing rather than an open-world festival as the center of the experience.
Best Value
- Classic Experience Built for a Modern Era: With all core gameplay modes present, plus two brand new modes and enhanced visuals, Street Fighter 6 redefines the classic fighting game genre.
- Distinct Fighting Styles to Master: 18 diverse characters including legendary World Warriors and exciting brand new characters add their own flair to the game at launch, with more to be added post-launch.
- Brand New Game Modes: The Street Fighter franchise continues to hone its skills and redefine the fighting genre with the introduction of three new foundational modes – Fighting Ground, World Tour and Battle Hub.
- In-Game Commentating: Street Fighter’s first-ever Real-Time Commentary Feature, supported with subtitles in 13 languages, incorporates the voices of popular Fighting Game Community (FGC) commentators like Vicious and Aru directly into the game to narrate what is happening on-screen just like a real tournament.
- Two New Control Schemes: Classic Controls returns alongside two brand new options: Modern Controls allow you to perform special attacks with simple button combinations and are designed for players who want to fight without memorizing and practicing special move button combinations first. Dynamic Controls only require a press of the Auto-Attack button to perform attacks and is a great control type to use when you have friends and family over for a quick, casual game.
Wait for FH6 if Japan and exploration matter more than immediate access
FH6 is the appropriate wait when your priority is driving through an open-world Japan, moving through festival activities, attending car meets, creating events and exploring between races. Its January 26, 2027 PS5 date, or January 21 Premium early access, is the price of getting that format on Sony’s console.
Wait for FH6 if your group uses several platforms
The announced cross-play and cross-save support across Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, PS5 and Steam can make FH6 more convenient for a mixed-platform group. Confirm the final account and progression rules before relying on the feature for a shared purchase, but it is a clear stated advantage over the information available for GT7.
Choose GT7 if you own PS VR2
GT7 has confirmed PS VR2 support. FH6’s cited PS5 announcements do not establish a VR mode, so GT7 is the safer choice for a headset owner who wants a documented feature rather than a possibility.
Do not choose based on unverified PS5 performance claims
If your decision depends on resolution, frame rate, wheel support or the precise feel of FH6’s controls, there is not enough released PS5 evidence to make that comparison responsibly. Either buy GT7, whose PS5 feature set is established, or wait until FH6 launches and those questions can be answered from the released version.
Buying guidance and accessories
Buying GT7
Gran Turismo 7 PS5 is a currently available game purchase. Confirm whether you are buying the PS5 edition and check your region’s current listing for price and edition details. The official page’s more-than-400-car and more-than-90-route figures describe the product, not a promise that every future update will leave those totals unchanged.
Buying FH6
A PS5 FH6 listing before January 26, 2027 is a preorder. Standard and Deluxe are scheduled for that date; Premium is the edition associated with January 21 early access. Check the retailer’s delivery, cancellation and platform wording, particularly if you want a physical disc. The publisher says discs will be available through supporting retailers, so availability can differ by store and region.
Wheels and pedals
A PlayStation-compatible racing wheel and pedals can be a useful category of accessory for either type of game, but compatibility with a particular model across both GT7 and FH6 on PS5 has not been established here. Check the exact model’s official compatibility list for each game and console before buying. Do not assume that a wheel working on one platform or edition will automatically work on the other.
Final recommendation
For a PS5 racing game you can play now, choose Gran Turismo 7. Its track-based format, car collection, Sport Mode, Gran Turismo Sophy and confirmed PS VR2 support answer the needs of a player seeking established features today.
Forza Horizon 6 is the better destination for an open-world Japan adventure, festival progression, exploration, custom events and announced cross-platform play and progression. Choose it only with the January 26, 2027 PS5 launch in mind, or January 21 Premium early access, and remember that its final PS5 performance and control feel remain unknown until release.
