Forza Motorsport’s much-improved AI drivers arrived in Update 20, which began rolling out on May 5, 2025—not in a future update. Turn 10 redesigned how Drivatars choose a path through traffic so they can use and blend between multiple racing lines, with the aim of improving side-by-side racing, starts, collision avoidance, awareness and passing.
What changed in Update 20?
Before Update 20, Turn 10 said, Drivatars relied on dynamic racing lines while navigating traffic. The studio said this approach could contribute to collisions, cars running off track and awkward attempts to merge back toward an ideal line. The new system was trained on multiple lines through traffic, allowing AI drivers to blend between them rather than being forced to follow one optimal path. Turn 10’s April 30, 2025 announcement said the change was intended to improve race starts, collision avoidance, situational awareness and passing, especially in heavy traffic.

Those are the developer’s descriptions of the update’s goals and behavior, not independently measured results. Turn 10 did not publish before-and-after figures for collision rates, successful passes or player satisfaction in the announcement or Update 20 notes.
How does the multi-line AI work?
In broad terms, the system gives AI drivers more than one usable route through a situation. When cars are close together, a Drivatar can move between lines to account for traffic instead of rigidly holding to the ideal line. That is the core distinction: the update targets how AI handles other cars, not simply how fast it can drive an empty lap.

Turn 10 said it ran “thousands of laps on a per track layout, per car type basis” to build custom racing lines. That figure describes the studio’s training process; it does not quantify how much the AI’s race outcomes improved.
What had changed before Update 20?
Update 20 was part of a sequence of AI adjustments, not the first change since Forza Motorsport launched in 2023. Turn 10 said it had already improved passing, reduced unnecessary braking and loosened overly strict adherence to racing lines. The studio’s April 2025 AI explanation describes those earlier changes alongside the multi-line work.

At launch, Creative Director Chris Esaki described AI driving as two parts: a controller that applies throttle, brake and steering, and a driving line that defines the path the car follows. In a 2023 explanation, he said the game used machine learning and that AI no longer replicated friends’ driving behavior, though it could still use their cars, drivers and customizations. He also said the computer drove each track 26,000 times to find the fastest line through every layout. That number concerns the launch-era line-generation process; it is not a measure of Update 20’s impact.
Did Update 21 improve the AI further?
Yes, according to its release notes. Update 21, which began releasing on June 16, 2025, listed “numerous fixes to AI behavior and competitiveness in single-player racing.” Its overview did not itemize those fixes, so it is not possible to say from that source exactly which situations changed or how large the effect was. See Turn 10’s Update 21 notes.

Is Forza Motorsport getting more AI updates?
Turn 10’s December 16, 2025 year-in-review said the team was shifting focus to Forza Horizon 6 in 2026 and did not plan new cars, tracks, features or regular bug fixes for Forza Motorsport. The studio said servers would remain active and special events, competitions, and monthly returns of previously released tours and reward cars would continue. That is the developer’s stated support plan; it does not promise further AI improvements. Read Turn 10’s year-in-review.
