Before replacing anything, identify what is actually loading fp20ime.dll.

  • Which program shows the error: Microsoft FrontPage, FrontPage Express, or another old application that includes FrontPage components?
  • When did it start: after uninstalling software, reinstalling Windows, cleaning the disk, restoring a backup, or an antivirus quarantine?
  • Which executable is involved: check the shortcut’s Target field or the application listed in Task Manager.
  • Which Windows architecture is involved: a 32-bit legacy application can run on 64-bit Windows, but it normally keeps its DLLs in its own installation folder.
  • Do you still have the original installer or licensed installation media?

fp20ime.dll is a legacy Microsoft FrontPage component. Its reported description is FrontPage Image, and it is associated with FrontPage and FrontPage Express rather than Windows itself.

The safest repair is to restore the complete FrontPage installation from legitimate media. Do not begin by downloading an isolated DLL or copying one into a Windows system folder.

What is fp20ime.dll?

fp20ime.dll is an application DLL used by legacy Microsoft FrontPage software. A FrontPage Express installation file inventory places it with other FrontPage files in the program’s installation directory, alongside files such as fpxpress.exe.

It is not a normal Windows component. There is no current official Microsoft download page for fp20ime.dll by itself, and available Microsoft documentation does not identify it as part of Windows, DirectX, .NET, Visual C++, or a current redistributable.

FrontPage 2003 was part of the Office 2003 product family, and Microsoft lists its support as ended on April 9, 2014. That matters because reinstalling the application may not be enough to make it fully compatible with a current Windows installation. See Microsoft’s FrontPage 2003 lifecycle information.

What error messages can appear?

Depending on the application and the failure, you may see wording such as:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • “Fp20ime.dll not found.”
  • “The file Fp20ime.dll is missing.”
  • “Cannot find Fp20ime.dll.”
  • “This application failed to start because Fp20ime.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.”
  • “Fp20ime.dll access violation.”
  • “Cannot register Fp20ime.dll.”

These messages do not necessarily mean the DLL itself is missing. A present DLL can fail to load because another dependency is missing, the file is damaged, or the old application is incompatible with Windows.

The exact wording depends on the program loading the file. Windows does not normally treat fp20ime.dll as one of its own standard system files.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall FrontPage

This is the most likely and safest fix.

If FrontPage is listed in Windows

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type appwiz.cpl and press Enter.
  3. Select Microsoft FrontPage, Microsoft Office, or FrontPage Express, depending on what is installed.
  4. Choose Change, Modify, or Repair.
  5. Follow the installer prompts.
  6. Restart Windows.
  7. Open the same program that originally reported the error.

If the installer offers Repair, use it first. Repair restores the application’s expected files and paths without requiring you to guess where the DLL belongs.

If no repair option is available:

  1. Back up FrontPage projects and website files.
  2. In Programs and Features, select the FrontPage installation.
  3. Choose Uninstall.
  4. Restart Windows.
  5. Run the original licensed installer or installation media.
  6. Install the complete application, not only a selected component.
  7. Restart Windows again and test the application.

If FrontPage does not appear in Programs and Features

The installation may be incomplete, portable, restored from an old backup, or installed by another legacy program.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Find the executable that produces the error:

  1. Right-click the shortcut.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Read the Target field.
  4. Open that folder in File Explorer.
  5. Check whether the folder contains the application’s other FrontPage files.
  6. Use the original installer for that specific program.

You can also start the application and open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc. Right-click the application under Processes and choose Open file location, if that option is available.

A successful repair normally means the application opens without the missing-file message and can load the project or document that previously failed. If the same message returns immediately, continue with the checks below rather than copying a DLL into System32.

Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine and backups

An antivirus product may have quarantined a damaged or suspicious copy of the file. Disk cleanup software, partial backups, and migrations can also remove application files.

Check quarantine

The exact menu varies by security product, but the process is usually:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Choose Protection history.
  4. Look for an entry involving fp20ime.dll or the FrontPage installation folder.
  5. Do not restore it automatically if the file came from an unknown download.
  6. Check that the detection refers to the known FrontPage installation.
  7. If the original installation is legitimate, restore the item only according to your security product’s guidance.
  8. Repair or reinstall FrontPage afterward.

If antivirus repeatedly quarantines the file, do not globally disable protection. Verify the installation media, scan the complete application folder, and investigate the detection. A file’s association with FrontPage does not prove that every copy found on disk is authentic.

Check a backup

If FrontPage worked before a disk migration or backup restoration:

  1. Open the backup location.
  2. Find the original FrontPage program folder.
  3. Confirm that fp20ime.dll is in that application folder, not merely somewhere on the backup drive.
  4. Prefer restoring the complete program installation or rerunning the installer.
  5. Do not restore only one DLL unless the application’s repair process specifically requires it.

System Restore is relevant only when the application and file worked at a known restore point. It is not a replacement for the original installer.

Fix 3: Confirm the file location and architecture

A 32-bit legacy application can run on 64-bit Windows through Windows’ compatibility layer. That does not mean the DLL should be copied into both Windows system folders.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The correct location is normally the folder belonging to the FrontPage application that loads it. Avoid copying it into:

C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64

Those directories contain Windows-managed components. Putting an application-private DLL there can create version conflicts and make future troubleshooting harder. System32 and SysWOW64 are also easy to confuse on 64-bit Windows.

  • MICROSOFT WINDOWS 11 PRO (INGLES) FPP 64-BIT ENG INTL USB FLASH DRIVE

To identify the application architecture:

  1. Open Task Manager.
  2. Select the Details tab.
  3. Right-click a column heading and choose Select columns.
  4. Enable Platform, if your Windows version provides it.
  5. Look for the executable associated with FrontPage.

If the platform column is unavailable, the application’s installer documentation or executable properties may provide the information. In either case, reinstall the complete application rather than trying to match an unverified DLL architecture manually.

There is no independently verified public Microsoft release record for a specific fp20ime.dll version or size. Treat version numbers shown on random download pages as unverified.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 4: Verify a replacement from legitimate installation media

If you have a known-good original installer or licensed installation media, use it to restore the file. Do not use an isolated DLL from an unfamiliar website.

After installation, verify the file’s location:

  1. Right-click the FrontPage shortcut.
  2. Select Properties and note the Target folder.
  3. Open that folder.
  4. Right-click fp20ime.dll.
  5. Select Properties.
  6. Check the Digital Signatures tab if it is present.
  7. Select a signature and choose Details.
  8. Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid.

A missing signature does not automatically prove that the file is malicious, especially for old software, but an invalid signature, an unexpected folder, or a file obtained outside the original installation should be treated cautiously.

You can also check the signature status in PowerShell:

Get-AuthenticodeSignature "C:PathToFrontPagefp20ime.dll"

Replace the path with the actual application folder. A trusted, known installation should not be replaced simply because a download page advertises a different version.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components only if Windows has broader problems

Because fp20ime.dll is an application file, System File Checker is unlikely to restore it. SFC repairs protected Windows components, not ordinary files belonging to old applications.

Use these commands if Windows itself is also showing corruption, crashes, or damaged system components:

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  1. Wait for DISM to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Test FrontPage again.

Microsoft documents this DISM-then-SFC sequence in its System File Checker guidance.

Running these commands repeatedly will not repair an application-private DLL if FrontPage is incomplete. Reinstall the parent application if the error remains.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When manually hunting through Windows repair commands and trying to determine what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can provide a free scan showing reported problems; repairs are handled by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling FrontPage remains the definitive fix for a missing application file.

Fix 6: Do not use regsvr32 as a general DLL repair

Do not run this command merely because the filename ends in .dll:

regsvr32 fp20ime.dll

regsvr32 applies to DLLs that implement registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. Many application DLLs do not provide those functions. A “not self-registerable” error does not prove that fp20ime.dll is missing or that registration caused the original problem.

Microsoft explains the limitations and error meanings in its Regsvr32 troubleshooting guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Only use registration instructions supplied by the original application’s documentation or installer. Do not use /u or /i as experimental fixes.

Fix 7: Check for a missing dependency

If fp20ime.dll exists in the correct FrontPage folder but still cannot load, the problem may be a dependency or general compatibility failure.

Check the error details:

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type eventvwr.msc and press Enter.
  3. Open Windows Logs and select Application.
  4. Look for an error at the time FrontPage failed.
  5. Note whether Windows names another DLL or runtime.
  6. Repair or reinstall the complete application.

Do not automatically install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET just because the failing file has a .dll extension. No verified evidence identifies one of those runtimes as a required dependency of fp20ime.dll. Install a runtime only when the application’s installer or the error specifically identifies it.

Fix 8: Update Windows and investigate drivers only when the symptoms are broader

Windows Update will not normally supply fp20ime.dll, but keeping Windows current can help with compatibility and security.

  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Choose Check for updates.
  4. Install available updates.
  5. Restart the computer.
  6. Test FrontPage again.

Device Manager is not a normal fix for this application DLL. Use it only if the same computer also has display, storage, or other hardware failures:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the relevant device category.
  4. Right-click the affected device.
  5. Choose Update driver.
  6. Select Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart if Windows installs an update.

Do not expect Device Manager to replace fp20ime.dll.

If you are manually hunting through many hardware vendors and guessing which of several drivers is stale, Outbyte Driver Updater provides a free scan identifying reported driver issues; driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional and unrelated to the primary FrontPage reinstall unless broader hardware symptoms are present.

Why random DLL downloads are a bad fix

Downloading fp20ime.dll from a random DLL site is risky because the file may be:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Tampered with or bundled with malware.
  • The wrong architecture for the calling application.
  • A different build from the one the application expects.
  • Missing a required dependency.
  • Placed in the wrong directory.
  • Unable to fix damaged FrontPage registry entries, shortcuts, or supporting files.

There is no current official Microsoft download for fp20ime.dll alone. The safe sources are the original licensed FrontPage or FrontPage Express installer, legitimate Microsoft installation media that includes the product, or a verified backup of the complete installation.

What to do if FrontPage still will not run

FrontPage is discontinued and unsupported. If reinstalling from legitimate media restores the file but the application still crashes or refuses to start, the remaining problem may be compatibility with modern Windows.

Try these steps only after confirming the installation is legitimate:

  1. Right-click the FrontPage executable or shortcut.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Compatibility tab.
  4. Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
  5. Try the Windows version closest to the application’s original release.
  6. Select Apply, then OK.
  7. Start FrontPage again.

Compatibility mode cannot repair missing files or guarantee that old web-editing features will work. Do not weaken antivirus or system security to keep unsupported software running.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the software remains unreliable, use an isolated legacy virtual machine only when you have legitimate installation media and an appropriate license. Keep the environment separated from modern work where possible. For websites and other content that can be exported, migrating the content to a supported tool is safer than depending indefinitely on discontinued software.

FAQ

Is fp20ime.dll a Windows system file?

No. It is associated with Microsoft FrontPage and FrontPage Express, not a normal Windows installation. It should generally remain in the application’s own folder.

Is fp20ime.dll safe?

The product identity is consistent with a genuine FrontPage component, but that does not prove that every copy is authentic. Check its origin, location, security history, and signature where available.

Should I copy it into System32 or SysWOW64?

No. Repair or reinstall the application that needs it. Copying an application DLL into Windows system folders can cause conflicts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is FrontPage Express the same as FrontPage?

They are related legacy Microsoft products, but they are not necessarily the same installation. Identify the executable producing the error and repair that exact program.

Will SFC fix fp20ime.dll?

Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows files, while fp20ime.dll is an application-private FrontPage component.

Does fp20ime.dll need to be registered?

Do not assume so. regsvr32 works only for DLLs that support the required registration functions. Reinstalling FrontPage is the appropriate first repair.

What if the error started after antivirus quarantine?

Review the quarantine entry, verify the application’s provenance, scan the full installation, and then repair FrontPage. Do not restore an unknown downloaded DLL or disable antivirus globally.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the final remedy if I no longer have the installer?

Do not replace the file from an untrusted download. Locate legitimate original media or a valid backup. If the application cannot be restored safely, use an isolated legacy environment or migrate the FrontPage content.
