hpousd05.dll is a legacy HP OfficeJet still-image driver component, not a normal Windows runtime file. When Windows reports that hpousd05.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, repair the HP OfficeJet software that requested it instead of downloading a replacement DLL.

The file is associated with HP scanner and imaging functions built around Microsoft’s Still Image Technology, or STI, which allows vendor-supplied scanner and camera components to work with Windows. Microsoft describes the architecture in its STI component documentation.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The exact OfficeJet model cannot be identified from the filename alone. The safest repair is therefore to identify the program making the request, then reinstall the complete HP software package for that printer or all-in-one.

Before fixing hpousd05.dll

Write down the complete error and when it appears:

  • During Windows startup
  • When opening HP scanning or imaging software
  • When scanning
  • When printing
  • When launching another application
  • Immediately after uninstalling HP software
  • After an antivirus scan, disk cleanup, restore, or Windows upgrade

Typical messages include:

  • “The program can’t start because hpousd05.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “This application failed to start because hpousd05.dll was not found.”
  • “Error loading hpousd05.dll.”
  • “Failed to load hpousd05.dll.”
  • “The file hpousd05.dll is missing or corrupted.”
  • “The program is not designed to run on Windows.”

These are generic loader messages. They do not prove that the DLL itself is the only damaged item. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency required by the DLL is missing.

Before changing anything, note the executable named in the dialog or the program that was opening when the error appeared. If the message occurs at startup, the caller may be an old HP utility or scheduled task rather than a program you currently use.

1. Reinstall the complete HP OfficeJet package

Time needed: 15 to 30 minutes, plus any download time

This is the most likely fix when you still use the printer or scanner.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not search for hpousd05.dll by itself. Go to HP Support, search for the exact OfficeJet model printed on the device, select Windows 10 or Windows 11 as appropriate, and choose the available full software or driver package. HP’s driver pages require the product and operating system because driver availability varies by model.

Use this procedure:

  1. Press Windows + I.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Open Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
  4. Search for the HP OfficeJet software, HP scanning software, or HP printer package.
  5. Select it and choose Uninstall.
  6. Follow the removal wizard.
  7. Restart Windows.
  8. Press Windows + I again and select Bluetooth & devices.
  9. Open Printers & scanners.
  10. Select the old OfficeJet entry and choose Remove if it remains.
  11. Disconnect the USB cable temporarily if the printer is connected by USB.
  12. Install the model-specific package downloaded from HP.
  13. Reconnect the printer only when the installer asks you to do so.
  14. Restart Windows after installation.

If the installer offers a choice between a basic driver and complete software, use the complete package when scanning or HP imaging functions are involved. The missing file is associated with still-image functionality, so installing only a basic print driver may not restore the component that calls it.

How to tell whether this worked

Open the HP scanning application, print a test page, and scan a document. Then restart Windows and check whether the original dialog returns.

If the error remains, identify the exact program named in the message. The installed HP package may not be the caller, or the package may not support the current Windows release.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Repair or update the printer and scanner entries

Time needed: 10 to 20 minutes

A damaged device entry or an incomplete driver replacement can leave Windows pointing to an old HP component.

Remove the device from Settings

  1. Press Windows + I.
  2. Select Bluetooth & devices.
  3. Choose Printers & scanners.
  4. Select the HP OfficeJet.
  5. Click Remove.
  6. Confirm the removal.
  7. Restart Windows.
  8. Reinstall the exact HP package from HP Support.

On Windows 10, open Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners, select the printer, and choose Remove device.

Check Device Manager

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Printers, Print queues, Imaging devices, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  4. Look for the HP OfficeJet, scanner, an unknown device, or a device with a yellow warning icon.
  5. Right-click the relevant entry and choose Properties.
  6. Read the Device status message on the General tab.
  7. Open the Driver tab and note the provider, date, and version.
  8. If the HP package was recently changed, select Roll Back Driver if that button is available.
  9. Otherwise choose Uninstall Device, select the option to remove the driver package only if you are certain it belongs to the obsolete HP installation, and restart.
  10. Install the current model-specific HP package.

Do not remove unrelated devices simply because they have similar names. If you are unsure which entry belongs to the OfficeJet, use the device’s Properties > Details > Hardware Ids list and compare it with the printer documentation.

Manually checking several driver versions can be tedious, especially on a machine with years of old printer, chipset, and imaging packages. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and shows what it found before any repair; its full version performs the driver installation, but the official HP package remains the preferred source for this specific OfficeJet component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to tell whether this worked

Device Manager should show no warning icon for the OfficeJet or scanner. The printer should appear under Printers & scanners, and Windows should complete a test print or scan without requesting hpousd05.dll.

3. Remove an obsolete HP startup entry

Time needed: 10 to 15 minutes

If you no longer use the OfficeJet, the error may come from an orphaned startup program, scheduled task, or scanner entry. In that situation, replacing the DLL is unnecessary. Remove the software that is still requesting it.

Check Startup apps

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Select Startup apps.
  3. Look for HP OfficeJet, HP imaging, scanner, printer assistant, or an unknown entry associated with the old device.
  4. Right-click an entry and select Disable.
  5. Restart Windows.

Disabling a startup entry is safer than deleting files because it allows you to reverse the change.

Check installed HP software

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Search for HP.
  3. Remove software that belongs only to the unused OfficeJet.
  4. Restart Windows.

Check Task Scheduler

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type taskschd.msc.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select Task Scheduler Library.
  5. Review tasks with HP, OfficeJet, scanner, or imaging names.
  6. Open a task’s Actions tab to see which executable it launches.
  7. If it clearly belongs to the abandoned device, right-click it and choose Disable.
  8. Do not delete a task unless you are certain it is obsolete.

Remove the old printer

Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners, select the unused OfficeJet, and choose Remove. On Windows 10, use Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to tell whether this worked

Restart the computer. If the message disappears and you no longer need the OfficeJet, the stale reference was probably the cause. If another application still reports the DLL, note its executable and repair that application separately.

4. Check antivirus quarantine

Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes

If the problem began immediately after a security scan, the file or its installer may have been quarantined. Do not restore it automatically.

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Choose Protection history.
  4. Review detections around the time the error began.
  5. Expand any detection associated with the HP installation.
  6. Record the original path and detection name.
  7. Restore the file only if it came from the legitimate HP installation and you can verify the package.
  8. If there is any doubt, leave it quarantined.
  9. Reinstall the complete HP package from HP instead.

If another antivirus product is installed, open its quarantine or history screen instead. A third-party claim that a DLL was scanned is not sufficient proof that it is safe.

Run a full security scan if the file exists in an unexpected directory, has a suspicious name variation, or is unsigned. A genuine HP component should normally be located in the original HP installation or driver area. Do not trust a copy merely because it is named hpousd05.dll.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to tell whether this worked

After restoring a verified file or reinstalling HP software, the security product should not immediately quarantine it again. If it does, stop restoring the file and investigate the detection before continuing.

5. Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility

Time needed: 10 to 20 minutes

Legacy HP imaging components are commonly 32-bit. A 64-bit version of Windows can run many 32-bit applications, but that does not make a 32-bit driver compatible with every modern Windows release.

Check your Windows architecture:

  1. Press Windows + I.
  2. Select System.
  3. Choose About.
  4. Read System type.

Now check the application that reports the error:

  1. Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
  2. Select the Details tab.
  3. Right-click a column heading.
  4. Choose Select columns.
  5. Enable Platform if available.
  6. Check whether the calling program is 32-bit or 64-bit.

Do not assume that a file belongs in System32 because that directory name sounds like a 32-bit location. On 64-bit Windows, System32 is primarily used for 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 contains many 32-bit Windows components.

Do not copy the DLL into both directories. Do not copy it from another computer unless you are performing controlled recovery from the same verified HP package and matching architecture. Manual copying usually leaves the underlying driver registration or dependency problem unresolved.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to tell whether this worked

The correct HP installer should complete without an architecture warning, and the HP application should launch using the driver package it installed. If HP provides no package for the current Windows architecture or release, continue to the compatibility section below rather than forcing the old DLL into a system directory.

6. Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC

Time needed: 15 to 30 minutes

Use these commands when other Windows files are also damaged, Windows updates fail, or the problem began after a system restore or disk problem. They are secondary for hpousd05.dll because SFC primarily repairs protected Windows files, not third-party HP driver files.

  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for DISM to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.

Microsoft documents this sequence in its System File Checker guidance.

If DISM reports that it cannot find source files, install pending Windows updates, restart, and run the command again. If SFC reports that it found corrupted files and repaired them, restart and test the HP software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can waste time when the actual problem is an uninstalled HP package. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows problems and shows what it found before repair; its full version performs the repair, but it is not a substitute for reinstalling the model-specific HP software.

How to tell whether this worked

Run the original program again after restarting. If the error is unchanged but Windows reports that system files were repaired, reinstall the HP package rather than continuing to run SFC repeatedly.

7. Check the Windows Image Acquisition service

Time needed: 5 minutes

The Windows Image Acquisition service supports scanners and imaging devices. It does not install hpousd05.dll, but a stopped service can create additional scanner failures that look related.

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type services.msc.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Find Windows Image Acquisition (WIA).
  5. Double-click it.
  6. Set Startup type to Automatic if the HP software requires it.
  7. If Service status is stopped, select Start.
  8. Click Apply, then OK.
  9. Restart the HP scanning application.

Do not enable unrelated Windows optional features to try to obtain the DLL. To view those features, open Start, type Turn Windows features on or off, and open the matching Control Panel item. WIA is a service, not an optional feature that supplies this HP file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Do not use regsvr32 as a generic repair

Time needed: none unless official instructions require it

Avoid commands such as:

regsvr32 hpousd05.dll

regsvr32 works only with DLLs that provide the registration entry points it expects. A printer or scanner driver is normally installed through its vendor package and INF files, not by blindly registering every DLL. Microsoft explains the limitations in its regsvr32 troubleshooting guidance.

If regsvr32 reports that the module could not be loaded, that can indicate a missing dependency or incorrect architecture. It does not prove that registering the file will repair the HP device.

Use regsvr32 only if the official HP instructions for the exact OfficeJet model explicitly require it.

9. Use System Restore after a clearly identified change

Time needed: 20 to 45 minutes

System Restore is appropriate when the error began immediately after uninstalling HP software, installing a driver update, restoring a backup, or running cleanup software.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Create a restore point.
  3. Open the result.
  4. Select System Restore.
  5. Choose a restore point dated before the failure.
  6. Review the affected programs.
  7. Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.

System Restore is not a replacement for obtaining the correct HP package. If the restore succeeds but the HP software remains damaged, reinstall it from HP afterward.

What causes hpousd05.dll errors

The most common causes are:

Cause Appropriate response
HP OfficeJet software was removed or damaged Reinstall the complete package for the exact model
An incomplete uninstall left a startup reference Remove the remaining HP software, task, or printer entry
Antivirus quarantined the file Verify the event, then reinstall from HP rather than using an unknown copy
A legacy package does not support the current Windows release Check HP’s model-specific support page and use a compatible environment if necessary
The DLL exists but a dependency is missing Repair the HP package and investigate broader Windows corruption
A restore, cleanup, or disk problem removed files Use System Restore, check disk health, and reinstall HP software
The file is in an unexpected location or unsigned Treat it as suspicious and scan the system

The metadata often associated with this file describes it as HP OfficeJet Still Image Device Driver and refers to a Windows (R) 2000 DDK driver. That text identifies the legacy development environment or product metadata; it does not make the file a modern Windows runtime or a Microsoft redistributable.

Reported file version, size, and architecture information is inconsistent in public records. Check the file’s Properties, Digital Signatures tab, location, and originating HP package rather than relying on a database listing.

If HP has no driver for your Windows version

HP support pages may show no driver when an OfficeJet is too old for the selected Windows release. Do not force an old DLL into System32 or SysWOW64.

Try these steps instead:

  1. Confirm the exact OfficeJet model.
  2. Check HP Support with the correct Windows edition and architecture.
  3. Install the newest package HP lists for that model.
  4. Check whether Windows can add the printer through Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners > Add device.
  5. For a scanner, check whether Windows detects the device through the available imaging software.
  6. If the device requires an older Windows environment, use it on a compatible, supported computer rather than weakening the current installation with random files.

If you no longer need the device, remove its HP software, printer entry, startup task, and scheduled task instead of trying to preserve the obsolete component.

Frequently asked questions

Is hpousd05.dll a Windows system file?

No. It is associated with a legacy HP OfficeJet still-image driver. Its metadata may mention Windows 2000 DDK, but that does not mean it is a normal Windows 10 or Windows 11 system DLL.

Which HP OfficeJet model installed it?

The filename alone does not identify one exact model. Several legacy OfficeJet packages may have used related imaging components. Identify the device and reinstall its own package.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I download hpousd05.dll separately?

Do not use random DLL download sites. An isolated file may contain malware, have the wrong architecture, be incompatible with the calling program, or omit the dependencies and registration installed by the full HP package.

Should I copy it into System32 or SysWOW64?

No. Do not copy the same DLL into both locations. Directory placement depends on architecture and installer behavior, and copying the file does not recreate the HP driver installation.

Will SFC restore hpousd05.dll?

Not necessarily. SFC is designed primarily to repair protected Windows system files. It may help when Windows itself is corrupted, but reinstalling the HP package is the correct first repair.

Why does Windows say the module is missing when the file is present?

The DLL may depend on another missing or damaged file, or the calling program may be incompatible with the installed architecture. Reinstall the HP package and identify the executable making the request.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is hpousd05.dll malware?

The filename alone does not prove that it is malicious. Verify its location, signature, origin, and relationship to an HP installation. An unsigned copy in an unrelated folder deserves investigation.

What if I do not own the HP printer anymore?

Uninstall the obsolete HP software, remove the printer and scanner entries, disable related startup items, and review Task Scheduler. The safest fix may be removing the stale request rather than restoring the DLL.

When should I use System Restore?

Use it when the problem clearly began after a recent driver change, HP uninstall, cleanup operation, or restore event. It should complement, not replace, installation of the correct HP package.
