fp40ext.dll is a Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions file from Microsoft FrontPage 2000, not a normal Windows 10 or Windows 11 system DLL. The safest fix is to identify the old application requesting it and repair or reinstall that complete application rather than downloading the DLL by itself.
What this file actually does
fp40ext.dll is associated with Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions 2000, a server-side component used with Microsoft FrontPage and older versions of Internet Information Services (IIS). FrontPage Server Extensions supported website management, forms, search features, and related web-authoring functions.

Microsoft documented FrontPage Server Extensions with historical IIS and Windows environments, including IIS 4.0 and IIS 5.0. The component was associated with older Windows releases and legacy applications, not with the normal Windows runtime installed on modern computers. Microsoft’s historical FrontPage Server Extensions security documentation explains its IIS relationship.

- Microsoft FrontPage 2000
- A legacy IIS or FrontPage Server Extensions installation
- An old web-development application
- A related program that was installed with FrontPage components
- A startup entry left behind after an uninstall
- An application migrated from an older Windows computer
It is not normally fixed by installing Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET.
Reported copies are 32-bit Windows PE files associated with FrontPage 2000. Do not assume that every installation used the same file version, size, or directory.
Common causes and the right response
| Symptom or recent change | Most likely cause | Best response |
|---|---|---|
| Error began after uninstalling software | A startup entry or dependent application still expects FrontPage components | Identify and remove or reinstall the parent application |
| Error appears when opening an old web tool | FrontPage, IIS, or FPSE files were removed or damaged | Repair or reinstall the complete legacy program |
| Error began after antivirus activity | The file was quarantined or removed | Check quarantine, verify the original path, then repair the parent program |
| The file exists but Windows says its module cannot be found | A dependency is missing or incompatible | Reinstall the owning program and inspect its event details |
| Error appears after moving software to Windows 10 or 11 | The old program is not compatible with the current system | Use a supported compatibility arrangement or an isolated legacy computer |
| Error appears at every startup | A stale service, scheduled task, or startup entry is calling it | Identify the caller and disable or uninstall it |
| Several Windows programs fail | Windows component or disk corruption may be involved | Run Windows Update, DISM, and SFC |
Fix 1: Identify the program requesting fp40ext.dll
Do this before copying files or changing system folders. The correct repair depends on the executable that loads the DLL.

Check the error window
Read the title bar and surrounding text. Some messages identify the application or executable. Write down:
- The program name
- Whether the error occurs at startup or only when opening a feature
- The full wording of the message
- Whether the error started after an uninstall, update, cleanup, or antivirus event
A message saying “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that fp40ext.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the file but failed to load another library that it depends on.
Check Task Manager startup entries
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for FrontPage, IIS, a web-authoring program, or an entry marked Unknown.
- Right-click a suspicious entry and choose Open file location.
- Record the executable path and publisher.
- If the software is no longer needed, return to the startup list, right-click it, and choose Disable.
Restart Windows and check whether the message returns. If it disappears, the stale startup entry was probably the trigger. Disabling startup does not repair the application, so uninstall the associated software if it is obsolete.
Check installed applications
On Windows 11:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for FrontPage, FrontPage Server Extensions, IIS, Visual InterDev, or the program named by the error.
On Windows 10:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Apps & features.
- Search the application list.
If you find the parent application, use its Modify, Change, or Repair option before attempting anything else.
Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the original program
This is the most likely definitive repair.
Use the original installation media, a verified organizational archive, or the application’s legitimate installer. Microsoft’s surviving FrontPage 2000 documentation is historical documentation, not a current standalone fp40ext.dll replacement.
Try the built-in repair option
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Select the application associated with the error.
- Choose Change, Modify, or Repair.
- Allow the installer to restore missing components.
- Restart Windows.
- Open the program that originally produced the error.
Success means the original application starts without the message and its FrontPage or IIS-related feature works again.
If there is no repair option, uninstall and reinstall the complete application. Restart after uninstalling, then install it from verified media. Do not install only a DLL copied from another computer.
Check Windows Features for IIS
The IIS component may be relevant if the error belongs to an old web server or development setup, but enabling IIS alone will not necessarily restore FrontPage Server Extensions.

optionalfeatures. - Press Enter.
- Review Internet Information Services.
- Enable only the features required by the documented application.
- Select OK and restart if Windows requests it.
On modern Windows, the available IIS features do not establish compatibility with FrontPage Server Extensions 2000. If the old program specifically requires FPSE, reinstall it in its intended legacy environment instead of randomly enabling IIS features.
Microsoft distinguishes different FrontPage Server Extensions generations and historical installation requirements. Installing a newer or different generation can leave the original application incompatible. See Microsoft’s FrontPage Server Extensions installation documentation.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may remove an old DLL because legacy server components can contain outdated code or behavior.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
fp40ext.dllor the parent application. - Expand the event and inspect the original path and detected publisher.
- Restore the file only if it clearly belongs to a known, legitimate installation.
- Immediately repair or reinstall the parent application.
Do not permanently disable antivirus protection or add a broad exclusion for System32, SysWOW64, or an entire drive. If the original installation is unknown, leave the file quarantined and reinstall the application from verified media instead.

If restoring the file makes the error disappear temporarily but the application still fails, reinstall the complete product. A restored DLL may depend on other files that are also missing.
Fix 4: Confirm architecture and compatibility
fp40ext.dll is reported as a 32-bit component. A 64-bit replacement is not interchangeable with it.
A 32-bit program on 64-bit Windows normally uses its own application directory and Windows’ 32-bit compatibility subsystem. This does not mean you should copy a file manually into System32 or SysWOW64. Those folders are not general-purpose DLL drop locations, and the wrong file can create additional loader errors.
If the program says the file is “not designed to run on Windows” or contains an error:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Confirm that the file came from the original installer.
- Check whether antivirus altered or quarantined it.
- Repair or reinstall the complete application.
- Confirm whether the application supports your Windows release.
- Test the program in an isolated legacy virtual machine if it requires an older Windows and IIS combination.
Compatibility mode may help with some old desktop applications, but it cannot recreate missing server components or guarantee that FrontPage Server Extensions will work. To try it:
- Right-click the application’s executable or shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Choose an appropriate older Windows version.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Start the program again.
If compatibility mode does not help, stop changing random settings. Use the program in its intended legacy environment or replace the obsolete workflow.
Fix 5: Run Windows Update, DISM, and SFC
These tools repair Windows components and protected system files. They do not guarantee restoration of fp40ext.dll, because this file is associated with FrontPage rather than being an established Windows 10 or Windows 11 inbox file.
First install pending updates and restart:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart the computer.
Then open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
Run DISM first:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run System File Checker:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands complete. Test the affected application.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the program again. If it reports no integrity violations but the same FrontPage error remains, that result is consistent with fp40ext.dll being an application file rather than a protected Windows file. Repair the owning application instead.
Repeating these commands will not substitute for the original FrontPage installer. If manually tracking component corruption and comparing repair results is taking time, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported Windows problems and show what needs attention; its full repair functions are separate from the free scan, and reinstalling FrontPage remains the definitive fix when that application is the source.
Fix 6: Do not use regsvr32 routinely
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points, commonly COM or ActiveX components. There is no reliable basis for treating fp40ext.dll as a self-registering COM DLL or for assuming that registration repairs FrontPage Server Extensions.
Do not run this as a default solution:
regsvr32 fp40ext.dll
If the command reports that an entry point is missing, that does not repair the file. It only confirms that the DLL does not support the registration operation being attempted. Use the original application installer instead.
Fix 7: Check for a stale startup, service, or scheduled task
If the error appears before you open any program, an abandoned installation may be calling the file.
Task Scheduler
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
taskschd.msc. - Press Enter.
- Select Task Scheduler Library.
- Review tasks that launch an old web tool, IIS utility, or unknown executable.
- Open a task’s Actions tab to see its executable path.
- Disable the task only after confirming that it belongs to obsolete software.
Services
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
services.msc. - Press Enter.
- Look for an old web server or application service.
- Open Properties and record the executable path if shown.
- Stop and disable it only if you have confirmed that the associated software is no longer needed.
Restart Windows. If the message stops, uninstall the abandoned application or remove its startup configuration through its own installer where possible.

A driver normally does not provide fp40ext.dll, so Device Manager is not a primary fix for this error. Use it only if the affected legacy application also reports hardware, display, storage, or network failures.

When manually hunting through hardware vendors and matching driver versions, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for reported driver problems and identify available updates; the scan is free, while driver installation features require the full version. Driver repair is not a substitute for reinstalling the FrontPage application that owns fp40ext.dll.
Success means the related hardware error is gone and the application’s own error changes or disappears. If only fp40ext.dll remains, return to the parent-application repair.
Fix 9: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore can help if the error began immediately after a cleanup, uninstall, failed setup, or update.

- Choose a restore point created before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not replace a supported installation process and may not restore an obsolete server component correctly. If the error remains, repair or reinstall the parent application.
Fix 10: Remove the obsolete component if you no longer need it
If you do not use FrontPage, IIS, or an old web-authoring application, restoring the DLL may preserve an unnecessary and historically exposed component.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps or Apps & features.
- Uninstall FrontPage, the related web tool, or the obsolete application.
- Open Task Manager and disable its leftover startup entry.
- Check Task Scheduler for tasks belonging to the removed software.
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft advised removing FrontPage Server Extensions when they were not required because of their historical security exposure. See the MS03-051 security bulletin.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Downloading fp40ext.dll from a DLL index or file-sharing site can provide:
- Malware or a repacked file
- The wrong architecture
- A different version than the application expects
- A file with missing dependencies
- A file that fails publisher verification
- A replacement that hides the original installation damage
Copying it into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 is not a safe repair method. There is no current universal Microsoft-supported standalone fp40ext.dll download identified for modern Windows. Use the original FrontPage or application installer, a verified enterprise archive, or an isolated legacy environment.
FAQ
Is fp40ext.dll part of Windows 10 or Windows 11?
It is not established as a normal Windows 10 or Windows 11 system file. It belongs to the historical Microsoft FrontPage 2000 and FrontPage Server Extensions software family.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Usually no. Those runtimes are not the identified owner of this file. First identify the application requesting it and repair that application.
Can SFC restore fp40ext.dll?
Not reliably. SFC repairs protected Windows files. Because fp40ext.dll is associated with FrontPage, the correct repair is normally the original application installer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCan I register it with regsvr32?
Do not use regsvr32 as a routine fix. Its usefulness depends on whether a DLL exposes the required registration entry point, and no reliable evidence establishes that for this file.
Does the error prove that fp40ext.dll is missing?
No. A dependency may be missing, incompatible, corrupted, or blocked. Reinstalling the complete parent program is safer than replacing one file.
What if I do not use FrontPage?
Find the startup entry, scheduled task, service, or abandoned application requesting the file and remove that obsolete component. Do not keep an old IIS or FrontPage installation solely to silence a startup message.
What is the safest solution on a modern 64-bit PC?
Use a supported replacement for the old workflow where possible. If the program is essential and cannot run on current Windows, keep it inside an isolated legacy virtual machine rather than copying historical server DLLs into modern Windows folders.
