If Windows reports that ncpclres.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, the problem usually involves an old NEC printer driver rather than a game, Visual C++ package, DirectX, or .NET installation.

ncpclres.dll is a legacy NEC PCL Printer Driver resource DLL associated with Microsoft’s older Windows printer-driver framework and NEC printer packages.

A printer resource DLL supplies items such as printer interface text, icons, fonts, and other resources used by the driver. The printer’s INF or GPD installation files tell Windows which resource DLL belongs to the package. It is not normally a standalone application and should not appear as a process that you launch manually.
The file is associated with older NEC SuperScript and PCL printer models, but the filename alone cannot identify the exact printer. It also does not mean that every Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation should contain the file. Public evidence connects it mainly with legacy Windows printer drivers, and there is no current Microsoft download page confirming that modern Windows installs it in System32 or SysWOW64.
Common messages include:
- “This application failed to start because ncpclres.dll was not found.”
- “The file ncpclres.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “Error loading ncpclres.dll.”
- “ncpclres.dll was not found.”
- “The program can’t start because ncpclres.dll is missing from your computer.”
The wording can appear when a printer setup program, print spooler component, or another executable tries to load an incomplete driver package.
Fix 1: Remove and reinstall the affected printer driver
This is the most likely solution when the error appears during printer installation, printing, or spooler activity. Reinstall the complete package instead of copying a single DLL.
On Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Choose the affected NEC printer.
- Select Remove and confirm.
- Restart Windows.
- Return to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- If Windows does not find the printer, select the manual-installation option.
- Choose the Windows Update driver list or provide the official driver package for the exact NEC model.
- Complete the installation.
- Open the printer’s settings and print a test page.
On Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Click the affected printer.
- Select Remove device, then confirm.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners again.
- Select Add a printer or scanner.
- If Windows cannot find it, choose the manual-installation option.
- Select the exact printer model from Windows Update or use the manufacturer’s compatible package.
- Print a test page.

Choose the driver for the exact model, not merely a similar NEC printer. If several versions are offered, use the one matching your Windows release and architecture. A legacy 32-bit resource DLL may be valid inside a 32-bit driver package but unsuitable for a 64-bit or ARM driver package.
Manually placing a 32-bit copy in System32 does not convert it into a 64-bit driver. Copying it to SysWOW64 does not make an incompatible printer package work either.

Remove an obsolete driver package if reinstalling does not help
A damaged package can remain after the printer itself has been removed.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
printui.exe /s /t2. - Press Enter.
- Select the Drivers tab.
- Select the obsolete NEC driver.
- Choose Remove.
- Select the option to remove the driver and driver package if Windows offers it.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the exact printer driver.
Do not remove a shared driver casually. Other printers on the computer may use the same package. Record the printer model first and remove only the obsolete package you have identified.
If the error is gone and a test page prints, the driver repair worked.

Fix 2: Install the driver through Windows Update
Windows Update may provide a compatible printer driver without requiring an old installation disc.
- Open Settings.
- Go to Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Open Advanced options > Optional updates.
- Expand Driver updates if that category is available.
- Install the printer driver that matches the NEC model.
- Restart Windows.
- Return to Printers & scanners and add the printer again.
If no NEC driver is offered, use the manufacturer’s official support package for the exact model. Avoid a download that provides only ncpclres.dll; the required INF, GPD, catalog, and other driver files must be installed together.
If the printer is very old, Windows 11 may no longer have a compatible package. The practical alternatives are the manufacturer’s last supported driver, a compatible generic PCL driver, or printing through a supported older computer or print server.
Fix 3: Repair Windows component files with DISM and SFC
Use this repair when other Windows components are also failing, Windows Update is damaged, or the file may have been removed from a protected Windows component.

This is not the first repair for a printer-only error. ncpclres.dll is normally restored by repairing the printer package. However, broader system corruption can interfere with driver installation.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until the verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Remove and reinstall the NEC printer driver again.
- Print a test page.
Microsoft recommends DISM before SFC. DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies when possible. See Microsoft’s Using System File Checker in Windows.
If DISM cannot obtain repair files through Windows Update, use a matching Windows installation source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace the example path with a valid source that matches the installed Windows edition and build. An unmatched source can fail to repair the image.

If SFC says it found and repaired corrupted files, restart and retry the printer installation. If it reports that some files could not be repaired, check the CBS log or continue with Microsoft’s documented repair procedure rather than downloading a replacement DLL.

Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software or cleanup utilities can remove a driver resource file, particularly after an old package is reinstalled.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand a detection related to
ncpclres.dll. - Check the original path, detection name, and source.
- Restore the file only if you can verify that it came from the official NEC printer package or trusted installation media.
- Reinstall the complete driver package after restoring it.
- Print a test page.
Do not allow a file solely because its name looks familiar. A malicious file can use the same filename. Microsoft explains Protection History and restoration decisions in Protection History in the Windows Security app.

If the file was found in a temporary folder, an application directory, or an unexpected user-writable location, leave it quarantined and run a full Microsoft Defender scan. If the situation remains suspicious, use an offline scan.
Fix 5: Check the file’s location and signature
A legitimate filename does not prove that the file is legitimate.
If a copy of ncpclres.dll exists on the computer:
- Right-click the file.
- Select Properties.
- Review the General tab for its location.
- Open the Details tab.
- Confirm that the description identifies the NEC PCL printer driver.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab if one is present.
- Review the signer and signature status.
- Compare the path with the printer-driver package that installed it.
- Scan the file with Windows Security.
Do not assume that a copy inside an unrelated application folder belongs there. If the error continues after the printer has been removed, identify which executable is requesting the DLL. Microsoft Sysinternals Process Explorer can show loaded modules and help distinguish a printer spooler problem from an unrelated application.
Fix 6: Use Device Manager only for the printer hardware entry
Device Manager can help when Windows has identified a problem with the printer connection or a related USB device, but it is not a replacement for reinstalling the complete printer package.

- Find the affected printer or related device.
- Right-click it and select Properties.
- Read the Device status message.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
- Test the printer.
If the device remains broken, select Uninstall device, restart Windows, and reinstall the official package. Do not delete a device entry unless you have identified the correct printer or USB device.

regsvr32 is not a general-purpose missing-DLL repair command. It is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by COM or ActiveX components.

regsvr32 ncpclres.dll
will commonly produce an error such as “DllRegisterServer was not found” and will not install the printer driver.

Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Do not download ncpclres.dll from a random DLL website and copy it into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder.
That approach can fail because:
- The file may be malware.
- The copy may have the wrong architecture.
- It may belong to a different driver build.
- It may lack the catalog and other files required by the printer package.
- Windows may continue requesting the missing package components.
- A mismatched file can create new compatibility or security problems.
There is no reliable current Microsoft standalone download for this DLL. Use Windows Update, the exact printer manufacturer package, or original installation media. Manual copying is appropriate only when repairing a verified matching package through a documented recovery procedure.
When System Restore is appropriate
Use System Restore only when the problem began immediately after a driver installation, Windows update, or other system change and a suitable restore point exists.
- Open Start.
- Search for Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the failure.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Start the restore.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the correct printer driver if necessary.
System Restore normally does not remove personal files, but it can change system files, settings, drivers, and installed programs. Microsoft’s guidance is available at System Restore.
