If fpmmc.dll is missing, Windows is usually trying to start a damaged or partially removed FrontPage Server Extensions component.
The safest repair is to restore the matching Microsoft FrontPage or FrontPage Server Extensions installation. Do not download a replacement DLL from a random website or copy one into System32. The file is associated with old 32-bit FrontPage administration software, and the wrong version, architecture, or dependency can leave the original problem unresolved.

What is fpmmc.dll?
fpmmc.dll is the Microsoft FrontPage Server Administration Snap-in used with FrontPage Server Extensions. Those extensions provided administration and authoring functions for websites hosted through IIS and other supported web servers.
The file is associated with several legacy Microsoft product families:
#1 Best Overall
- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
- Microsoft FrontPage 2000 Server Extensions
- FrontPage Server Extensions 2002
- Some related SharePoint-era administration installations
Microsoft documentation identifies both FrontPage Server Extensions 2000 and 2002 as separate product families. Related files and versions can differ, so a FrontPage 2000 DLL should not automatically be substituted for a FrontPage Server Extensions 2002 DLL.
A historical installation path resembles:
%ProgramFiles%Common FilesMicrosoft SharedWeb Server Extensions40binfpmmc.dll
That is a product-installation path. It does not mean that fpmmc.dll belongs in:
C:WindowsSystem32
The commonly catalogued file is 32-bit. FrontPage Server Extensions 2002 also had separate x86 and x64 packages, but the architecture must match the FrontPage component and the MMC process that loads it.

Microsoft lists fpmmc.dll version 10.0.6790.0 among FrontPage Server Extensions 2002 files. Other known FrontPage-era versions include 10.0.2623.0, 4.0.2.8912, and 4.0.2.2717. These versions are not interchangeable merely because the filename is identical.
Before repairing it, identify what is launching the file
The same missing-DLL message can come from different launchers. You may see messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because fpmmc.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “fpmmc.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading fpmmc.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The procedure entry point could not be located in the dynamic link library fpmmc.dll.”
- “fpmmc.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
The exact wording depends on the Windows version and the program that requested the DLL. It does not, by itself, prove that FrontPage is still installed correctly.
Ask these questions before changing anything:
- Does the error appear when opening FrontPage, IIS administration, or an old website-management tool?
- Does it appear immediately after signing in to Windows?
- Does it appear only when opening an old project or server console?
- Was FrontPage, Office, IIS, or SharePoint recently removed?
- Is the file present somewhere on the computer?
To search the usual program directories:
- Press Windows key, type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
where /r "%ProgramFiles%" fpmmc.dll
where /r "%ProgramFiles(x86)%" fpmmc.dll
If a path is returned, right-click the file in File Explorer, select Properties, and inspect the Details and Digital Signatures tabs.

Fix 1: Repair the original FrontPage or Office installation
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes, if the original installation media or installer is available
This is the most direct fix when the error appears while opening FrontPage or a legacy FrontPage administration tool.
On Office 2000 systems
Microsoft’s historical Office 2000 maintenance flow is:
Recommended Free Tools
- Close FrontPage and other Office programs.
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs.
- Select Programs and Features or Add or Remove Programs, depending on the Windows version.
- Select Microsoft Office 2000.
- Choose Change, Change/Remove, or Repair, depending on the available interface.
- Select Repair Office.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Reopen the program that produced the error.
The installer may request the original Office or FrontPage installation CD, network location, or setup files.
If FrontPage Server Extensions is listed separately
Look in Programs and Features for an entry that refers to:
Rank #2
- 256 GB SSD of storage.
- Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
- Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
- Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions
- FrontPage Server Extensions 2000
- FrontPage Server Extensions 2002
- Microsoft SharePoint-related legacy administration components
Select the matching entry and choose Change or Repair if that option exists. If repair is unavailable, uninstalling and reinstalling the matching package may be necessary.
Use the same product generation that originally owned the file. Replacing a FrontPage 2000 component with a FrontPage Server Extensions 2002 DLL can create version and dependency mismatches.

Repair was successful if:
- The original FrontPage or administration tool opens without the DLL error.
- The error no longer appears at sign-in.
- The repaired installation contains
fpmmc.dllin its own Web Server Extensions directory. - The file’s Details and Digital Signatures tabs identify a credible Microsoft installation.
If the installer cannot run on the current version of Windows, do not force the DLL into a Windows directory. A preserved legacy server or virtual machine may be a safer place to maintain software that still requires FrontPage Server Extensions.
Fix 2: Reinstall the matching legacy component
Time needed: 20 to 60 minutes, depending on installation media
If repair cannot restore the file, reinstall the exact FrontPage Server Extensions package used by the application.
Before uninstalling anything, record:
- The name of the product shown in Programs and Features
- The path of any existing
fpmmc.dll - The file version shown under Properties → Details
- Whether the operating system is 32-bit or 64-bit
- The application or MMC console that reports the error
Then:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Select the FrontPage, FrontPage Server Extensions, Office, or SharePoint-related entry.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows if requested.
- Run the installer from the original media or a verified Microsoft-supplied legacy package.
- Install the matching product generation.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the original application.
FrontPage Server Extensions are obsolete and have security implications. Microsoft has recommended removing them when they are not required. Do not reinstall a legacy web-server component solely to eliminate a harmless leftover shortcut.
Microsoft’s IIS documentation explains that FrontPage Server Extensions were not included as a normal feature in later Windows versions. Later IIS-era packages were supplied separately rather than being a current Windows component.
If the program is no longer needed
If you no longer administer a FrontPage website, the best repair may be removal rather than restoration:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps or Apps & features.
- Search for FrontPage, FrontPage Server Extensions, SharePoint, or an old website administration tool.
- Select the entry and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Check Task Manager → Startup apps for a leftover launcher.
- Disable a startup entry only if you recognize it as the obsolete FrontPage tool.
You can also inspect Task Scheduler for a task that launches an old administration utility. Do not delete unfamiliar tasks merely because their names look unusual.
Fix 3: Check Microsoft Defender before restoring the file
Time needed: 5 to 20 minutes
A filename does not prove authenticity. Malware can use a familiar DLL name, including FPMMC.dll, to appear legitimate.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf Windows Security removed or quarantined the file:
- Open Settings.
- Select Privacy & security.
- Select Windows Security.
- Open Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Expand the relevant detection.
- Review the file path, detection name, and action taken.
Only consider restoring the file if all of the following are true:
- It came from a known-good FrontPage installation.
- Its path belongs to the expected Microsoft installation directory.
- Its publisher and digital signature are credible.
- The detection was reviewed carefully rather than dismissed automatically.
Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined file can put a real threat back onto the computer. If the file was found in a temporary directory, a download folder, a user profile, or an unrelated application directory, leave it quarantined and run a full scan.

If the file has been replaced rather than removed, reinstall the legitimate FrontPage component after the system is clean. Do not overwrite the suspicious copy with another DLL.
Fix 4: Run DISM and System File Checker
Time needed: 15 to 45 minutes
fpmmc.dll is normally a third-party application DLL, not a protected Windows system component. Therefore, DISM and SFC may not recreate it. They are still useful when the missing-file message appeared after broader Windows corruption or an interrupted update.
- Press Windows key.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks protected Windows files against the repaired component store. Neither command is a substitute for reinstalling FrontPage Server Extensions when the missing file belongs to that product.
If you repeatedly run these commands without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can show the issues it finds before repair; its free scan identifies problems, while repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the FrontPage component remains the definitive fix when that product owns fpmmc.dll.
How to interpret the result
- If DISM and SFC report no problems, focus on FrontPage repair, file authenticity, and stale startup references.
- If SFC repairs files, restart and test again.
- If SFC cannot repair some files, review the result and continue with the product repair rather than copying a DLL manually.
- If Windows itself has broader failures, repair Windows before attempting to run an obsolete server extension.
Fix 5: Use System Restore after a recent change
Time needed: 20 to 45 minutes
Use System Restore only when the error began after a software installation, update, driver change, or other identifiable system change and a suitable restore point exists.
- Press Windows key and type
Create a restore point. - Open the matching Control Panel result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose Next.
- Select a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore can roll back system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs. It does not normally remove ordinary personal files. It is not guaranteed to restore an old FrontPage DLL, and it requires an appropriate restore point.
After the rollback, test the application that originally requested fpmmc.dll. If the problem returns after reinstalling a component, the installer or component itself needs attention.
Fix 6: Check recent drivers only when the timing points there
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes
A display or storage driver does not normally own fpmmc.dll. Do not install random drivers as a general DLL fix. Check drivers only if the failure started immediately after a driver update or Windows hardware change.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the device category related to the recent change.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Review the driver provider, date, and version.
- If the problem began after an update, select Roll Back Driver if available.
- Restart Windows and test again.
If rollback is unavailable, obtain the driver from the computer or hardware manufacturer. Do not use a driver package that merely happens to mention DLL errors.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
When several devices may have stale drivers, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver versions instead of making you hunt through multiple manufacturer pages; its free scan shows the findings, while installation is handled by the full version. This is optional and will not replace a missing FrontPage component.

Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes
fpmmc.dll is an MMC snap-in. MMC snap-ins are COM in-process DLLs and can require registry registration. Registration is therefore relevant when:
- The authentic file exists.
- It is in the matching FrontPage installation directory.
- MMC reports that it cannot create or load the snap-in.
- Repair has not corrected the registration.
Registration is not a general solution for “DLL missing” errors. If the file does not exist, regsvr32 cannot recreate it.
First locate the verified file and copy its full path. Then:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run the command with the actual path:
regsvr32 "C:fullpathtofpmmc.dll"
- Restart the affected MMC console.
- Test the FrontPage administration function again.
If Windows reports that the entry point is missing, stop. That usually means the particular DLL build is not suitable for this registration command, or a dependency is missing. If registration reports that the module could not be loaded, the file may have a missing dependency or may be the wrong architecture.
Do not copy the file to System32 or SysWOW64 to make registration work. On 64-bit Windows, those directories serve different execution contexts, and placing a 32-bit application DLL in the wrong directory can create additional loading problems.

Why downloading fpmmc.dll is unsafe
Random DLL download sites create several risks:
- The file may contain malware.
- It may have the wrong FrontPage version.
- It may be 64-bit when the application requires 32-bit.
- It may lack required dependencies.
- It may have been modified or repackaged.
- It may be placed in the wrong directory.
- It may silence one message while leaving the broken installation untouched.
There is no current Microsoft-supported standalone fpmmc.dll redistributable for modern Windows. Use the original FrontPage or FrontPage Server Extensions installation media, a verified Microsoft legacy package, or a preserved installation that can be validated.

Common causes of the error
| Cause | What usually fixes it |
|---|---|
| FrontPage Server Extensions were partially removed | Repair or reinstall the matching FPSE package |
| Office or FrontPage installation is damaged | Run the product’s maintenance repair |
| Old MMC shortcut remains after uninstall | Remove the stale shortcut or uninstall the remaining component |
| Defender quarantined the file | Review Protection history and reinstall from a known-good source |
| Wrong version or architecture | Restore the matching product generation and bitness |
| A dependency is missing | Repair the complete product, not just the DLL |
| Windows has broader corruption | Run DISM, then SFC |
| A recent system change caused the failure | Use System Restore if a suitable restore point exists |
There is no good evidence that current Visual C++ redistributables, modern DirectX packages, or ordinary modern games normally require fpmmc.dll. If a current game reports this filename, investigate a bundled legacy launcher, stale shortcut, or unrelated malicious file rather than assuming the game needs FrontPage.
Frequently asked questions
Is fpmmc.dll a Windows file?
No. It is a Microsoft application and server-extension file associated with FrontPage administration. It should not normally be downloaded into System32 or SysWOW64.
Does fpmmc.dll belong to Visual C++?
No. It is not a Visual C++ redistributable component. Installing or repairing a current Visual C++ package is unlikely to restore it.
Is fpmmc.dll part of FrontPage 2000?
It is associated with Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions and FrontPage 2000-era installations. Some installations use later FrontPage Server Extensions 2002 or SharePoint-related components, so verify the owning product and file version before replacing anything.
Can I ignore the error?
If you no longer use FrontPage Server Extensions or administer a legacy website, you can usually remove the obsolete component or stale startup reference instead of restoring it. If an old website administration workflow still depends on it, repair the matching installation.
Should I run regsvr32?
Only when an authentic fpmmc.dll already exists in the correct installation directory and MMC cannot load the snap-in. It cannot restore a missing file and is not a universal DLL repair command.
Why does Windows say “module not found” when the file exists?
A dependent DLL may be missing, the file may be damaged, or the application may be loading the wrong copy. Check the complete installation path, file version, signature, architecture, and product repair state.
Should I install FrontPage Server Extensions on Windows 11?
Only if a specific legacy workflow still requires it and you understand the security and compatibility implications. For a server or website that no longer needs FrontPage extensions, removal is safer than reinstalling obsolete server software.

- Whether a Microsoft digital signature is present
- Whether FrontPage, Office, IIS, or SharePoint components are installed
- Whether Defender quarantined or detected the file
- Which repair steps completed successfully
Those details distinguish a damaged FrontPage installation from a stale MMC registration, a missing dependency, an architecture mismatch, or a suspicious same-name file.
