“The code execution cannot proceed because fontcap.dll was not found.” The fontcap.dll error usually means an Autodesk installation is incomplete, damaged, quarantined, or being launched with the wrong supporting files.
The safest fix is to repair or reinstall the Autodesk product named by the error. Do not download fontcap.dll into System32, copy it from another computer, or register it with regsvr32.

Which fix applies to you
Use the first description that matches what you see:
- The error names AutoCAD, AutoCAD LT, DWG TrueView, or another Autodesk program: repair or reinstall that exact product.
- The problem began after an update, uninstall, cleanup utility, or partial reinstall: reinstall the affected Autodesk product.
- The file is missing from the Autodesk installation folder: check antivirus quarantine, then repair or reinstall Autodesk.
- The message says “not designed to run on Windows” or shows
0xc000007b: suspect a damaged or mismatched Autodesk file, not necessarily a Windows system-file problem. - Several unrelated programs also fail: repair Windows components with DISM and SFC.
- The error names
MSVCP*.dll,VCRUNTIME*.dll, orVCOMP*.dllas well: repair the matching Microsoft Visual C++ runtime. - Only an old Autodesk release fails on a newer Windows installation: reinstalling the old release may not solve broader compatibility problems.
- You are considering
regsvr32 fontcap.dll: do not use it unless Autodesk specifically instructs you to do so.
Before changing anything, record the complete error message, the executable name, and the full path shown in the dialog. Those details identify which Autodesk product needs repair.

What fontcap.dll is
fontcap.dll is an Autodesk application DLL. Its reported description is Autodesk Font Capture Dialog DLL, and it is associated with the Autodesk Hardcopy Subsystem, a component involved in hardcopy, plotting, printing, and font handling.
Autodesk products can capture eligible TrueType fonts when producing certain DWF output. fontcap.dll appears to support part of that font-capture workflow, although Autodesk does not publicly document every internal DLL by filename.
The file may be found with older AutoCAD-family products, DWG TrueView, and related Autodesk installations. A related file, fontcapres.dll, is described in software inventories as the Autodesk Hardcopy Font Capture Dialog Resource DLL.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsfontcap.dll is not identified as a Windows component. Windows does not normally install it, and it should normally remain inside the Autodesk product directory that supplied it. The exact location varies by product, release, installation type, language, and system architecture.
Historical software inventories report both 32-bit copies of fontcap.dll and 64-bit Autodesk Hardcopy Subsystem entries. Do not assume that every copy is interchangeable. A 32-bit Autodesk executable requires the matching 32-bit DLL, even when it runs on 64-bit Windows.
First, identify the Autodesk product and path
Do this before repairing a different Autodesk program by mistake.
Read the error dialog
Look for a path such as:
C:Program Files...fontcap.dll
or:
C:Program Files (x86)...fontcap.dll
Also note the executable mentioned in the title bar or message. It may be AutoCAD, an AutoCAD-based vertical product, DWG TrueView, or another Autodesk launcher.

- Read the Target field.
- Note the executable name and its folder.
- Select Cancel without changing the shortcut.
If the target points to a different Autodesk product than the one you intended to start, repair the product shown by the target.
Check installed applications
On Windows 11:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for Autodesk, AutoCAD, or DWG TrueView.
On Windows 10:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Apps & features.
- Search for the Autodesk product.
Write down the exact product name. If several Autodesk products are installed, repairing AutoCAD will not necessarily restore a DLL required by DWG TrueView.
Fix 1: Repair the Autodesk installation
Repair is the preferred first action when the classic Autodesk installer provides it. It restores missing application files without requiring you to find individual DLLs.
This option is commonly available with older Autodesk products, including many classic-installer releases from 2021 and earlier.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
text
appwiz.cpl
- Press Enter.
- Find the affected Autodesk product.
- Right-click it.
- Select Uninstall/Change, Change, or Modify.
- Choose Repair.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows when the process finishes.
- Start the same Autodesk executable again.
A successful repair should allow the application to open without the fontcap.dll message. It should also restore the file to the application directory rather than placing it in a Windows system folder.
If Repair is unavailable, or the repair reports that required source files cannot be found, continue with a reinstall.

Fix 2: Reinstall the exact Autodesk product
Reinstall the product that produces the error, not simply any Autodesk application on the computer.
For newer Autodesk installation technology, including many products from 2022 onward, the classic Repair or Reinstall choice may not be present.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the affected Autodesk product.
- Select its menu button.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows if the uninstaller requests it.
- Sign in to the user’s Autodesk Account or open the official Autodesk product page from a browser.
- Download the installer for the same product, language, and required architecture.
- Run the installer.
- Complete the installation.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the product from its normal shortcut.
For DWG TrueView, reinstall DWG TrueView itself. Reinstalling AutoCAD will not be a substitute if DWG TrueView is the program that cannot load fontcap.dll.
If the product is managed by an organization, use the company’s approved Autodesk deployment package instead of downloading a different release. Matching the original product and build is important because copying a DLL from another AutoCAD release can create a Bad Image error or a crash after startup.
If reinstalling works, do not separately copy fontcap.dll into System32 or SysWOW64. The installer should place it where the Autodesk executable expects it.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can quarantine an application DLL after an update or after an installation is interrupted.
Windows Security
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
fontcap.dllor the Autodesk installation directory. - Confirm that the detection refers to the affected Autodesk product.
- Restore the file only when you are confident that it came from a trusted Autodesk installation and the detection is a false positive.
Do not disable antivirus protection merely to copy a DLL. If the file can be restored, run the Autodesk repair process afterward so the product is rebuilt from its official package.
If a third-party antivirus program is installed, open its quarantine or protection-history screen and check the same way. Follow the vendor’s process for restoring a false positive and adding a narrowly scoped exclusion if your organization permits it.
If the detection is unresolved, leave the file quarantined and reinstall Autodesk from its official installer. A fresh signed package is safer than restoring an uncertain file.
Fix 4: Check for a version or architecture mismatch
A mismatched fontcap.dll can produce messages such as:
C:Pathfontcap.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.
It may also produce:
The application was unable to start correctly (0xc000007b).
These messages do not prove that the DLL belongs in C:WindowsSystem32. They often indicate that the file is damaged, belongs to another release, or does not match the executable.
Check the following:
- Is the Autodesk application 32-bit or 64-bit?
- Was
fontcap.dllcopied from another Autodesk product? - Did the error begin after replacing files manually?
- Did a cleanup tool remove part of the installation?
- Is the application installed under
Program FilesorProgram Files (x86)? - Are the DLL and executable from the same Autodesk installation?
The safe correction is to remove the mismatched file through the product’s uninstall process and reinstall the exact Autodesk product. Do not try several downloaded versions until one appears to work.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components only when other programs are affected
Windows repair commands are appropriate when multiple unrelated applications fail, Windows itself behaves abnormally, or the error names files inside C:WindowsSystem32.

They are less likely to restore fontcap.dll when only one Autodesk product fails, because fontcap.dll is an application file rather than a Windows system DLL.

- Wait for the operation to complete.
- Restart Windows if DISM reports that a restart is required.
DISM may take time and may appear to pause. Let it finish. A successful result reports that the restore operation completed successfully. If it reports that source files could not be found, do not repeatedly copy random DLLs into system folders. Continue with Microsoft-supported Windows recovery options or contact your administrator.
Run System File Checker
After DISM completes, open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files, restart Windows and test Autodesk. If it reports that it could not repair some files, save the result and continue with Autodesk repair or reinstall. SFC is not expected to recreate an Autodesk-owned fontcap.dll.

Fix 6: Repair a missing Microsoft runtime dependency
fontcap.dll is not a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime DLL. Installing Visual C++ will not normally recreate it.
However, check the complete error message. If it also names one of these files, a runtime repair may be appropriate:
MSVCP*.dll
VCRUNTIME*.dll
VCOMP*.dll
Use Microsoft’s official Visual C++ package matching the affected application architecture. An older Autodesk application may require an older side-by-side runtime, so do not remove existing redistributable versions indiscriminately.
After installing or repairing the runtime:
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the same Autodesk executable.
- If the
fontcap.dllmessage remains, repair or reinstall Autodesk.
Do not install a 64-bit runtime solely because Windows is 64-bit. A 32-bit Autodesk application may require the x86 runtime.
Fix 7: Do not use regsvr32 for this file
regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command. It registers DLLs that provide the appropriate registration entry point, such as DllRegisterServer.
There is no verified evidence that fontcap.dll is an ActiveX or COM self-registering DLL. Running this command is therefore not an appropriate repair:
regsvr32 fontcap.dll
Possible results include “the module failed to load” or “the entry point was not found.” Neither result restores the Autodesk installation.

A graphics-driver problem can cause Autodesk display or startup failures, but it does not normally explain a missing fontcap.dll. Do not update drivers as the first response to this specific DLL message.
Consider a graphics-driver check when:
- Autodesk opens but crashes while displaying drawings.
- Windows reports a display-driver reset.
- Other 3D applications show the same visual failure.
- Device Manager shows a warning icon for the display adapter.
To inspect the adapter:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the adapter.
- Select Properties.
- Open the General tab and read the device status.
- Open the Driver tab to review the provider and status.
- Use the computer or graphics-device manufacturer’s official driver source for updates.
Do not uninstall a working display driver merely because fontcap.dll is missing. If the driver is clearly stale or damaged, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its driver installation features require the full version, and updating a driver will not replace the Autodesk DLL itself.
Fix 9: Test for a damaged Autodesk user profile
If the product works under a new Windows user account, the installation may be intact while the original Autodesk profile is damaged.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To test:
- Open Settings.
- Select Accounts.
- Select Other users.
- Add a temporary local test account.
- Sign in to that account.
- Launch the Autodesk product.
If the application works there, do not copy DLLs between profiles. Reset or recreate the affected Autodesk user profile using your organization’s supported Autodesk procedure. Preserve templates, custom menus, plot styles, and other user settings before removing profile data.
What not to do
Avoid these common but unsafe responses:
- Downloading
fontcap.dllfrom a random DLL archive. - Copying the file into
System32orSysWOW64. - Replacing a 32-bit file with a 64-bit file.
- Copying a file from another AutoCAD release.
- Running registry cleaners.
- Disabling antivirus protection permanently.
- Registering the file with
regsvr32. - Repairing AutoCAD when DWG TrueView is the affected product.
- Installing Visual C++ when the only missing file is
fontcap.dll.
Untrusted DLL downloads can contain malware, the wrong build, or the wrong architecture. They also leave the damaged Autodesk installation, dependencies, and installer records unresolved.
If the error persists after reinstalling
Collect this information before contacting Autodesk Support or your administrator:
- Full error text.
- Executable name.
- Full path shown for
fontcap.dll. - Autodesk product name and release.
- Windows version.
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Antivirus quarantine result.
- DISM and SFC results.
- Installer or deployment logs.
- Whether the product works under a new Windows profile.
- Whether other Autodesk products start normally.
If the same old Autodesk release continues to fail on a current Windows installation, the issue may be broader compatibility rather than one missing DLL. Where licensing permits, use a supported Autodesk release instead of repeatedly replacing individual files.

Is fontcap.dll a Windows file?
No evidence identifies it as a Windows system component. It is associated with Autodesk Hardcopy Subsystem and should normally be installed inside the Autodesk product directory.
Which programs use fontcap.dll?
Reported inventories associate it with AutoCAD-family products, DWG TrueView, and older Autodesk hardcopy or plotting components. The exact parent product varies by release.
Should I download fontcap.dll separately?
No. Use the official Autodesk installer for the affected product. A downloaded DLL may be malicious, mismatched, or incomplete.
Should I copy it to System32?
No. Copying it to a Windows system directory can create a path, permission, and architecture mismatch. Restore it through Autodesk repair or reinstallation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsShould I register it with regsvr32?
No. There is no verified evidence that fontcap.dll is a self-registering COM or ActiveX DLL. regsvr32 is not a general-purpose repair tool.
Will installing Visual C++ fix it?
Not normally. Visual C++ can help only when the error also names a missing Microsoft runtime dependency such as MSVCP*.dll or VCRUNTIME*.dll.
Why does Windows say the file is not designed to run on Windows?
That is a generic Bad Image message. It can indicate corruption, a wrong build, a damaged dependency, or an architecture mismatch. It does not mean the file belongs in System32.
What is the definitive fix?
Repair the exact Autodesk product if Repair is available. Otherwise uninstall and reinstall that product from its official Autodesk installer, then confirm that the application starts normally.
