FlashPix is an older image format. IrfanView uses fpx.dll when it needs to open those images. The rest of IrfanView may continue working if the plug-in is absent, while opening an .fpx file produces an error.

IrfanView’s current main release and the FPX plug-in do not necessarily have the same version number. The vendor lists the main application as version 4.75 and the FPX plug-in as version 4.56. Do not use a plug-in version number from an unofficial DLL site as a reason to replace the official package.
Error messages you may see
The wording depends on whether Windows is loading the file as a dependency or IrfanView is trying to load it as a plug-in. Common variations include:

- “This application failed to start because fpx.dll was not found.”
- “The file fpx.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “Cannot find fpx.dll.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because fpx.dll was not found.”
- “Can’t load Plugin: FPX.DLL.”
These messages do not prove that Windows itself is damaged. In most cases, they indicate that the IrfanView plug-in was never installed, was removed, is in the wrong folder, or does not match the application’s architecture.
Fix 1: Reinstall the official 32-bit IrfanView plug-in
This is the most likely solution. It restores the plug-in from the product that owns it instead of copying an unknown DLL into a Windows folder.
Step 1: Check which IrfanView installation you are using
- Close IrfanView.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type
IrfanView. - Right-click the result and select Open file location.
- In File Explorer, right-click the IrfanView shortcut and select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, inspect Target.
- Select Open File Location if available.
You may have more than one IrfanView installation. A 32-bit installation is commonly under:

A 64-bit installation is commonly under:
C:Program Files
The folder location is a clue, not a complete diagnosis. IrfanView’s own 64-bit documentation and plug-in list are the authoritative sources for the installed architecture.
Step 2: Obtain the correct package
Go to the official IrfanView website and open its plug-ins download page. Download one of these official 32-bit packages:
- The complete 32-bit plug-in installer, currently listed as
iview475_plugins_setup.exe - The official formats archive,
iv_formats.zip
For most users, the complete plug-in installer is simpler because it places the files into the selected IrfanView directory.
Do not download an isolated fpx.dll from a DLL collection site. A standalone file may be the wrong build, the wrong architecture, incomplete, modified, or bundled with malware. It also leaves the rest of the plug-in installation unresolved.
Step 3: Install into IrfanView 32-bit
If you downloaded the installer:
- Right-click the installer.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Accept the license or setup prompts.
- When asked for the IrfanView location, select the existing IrfanView 32-bit folder.
- Complete the installation.
- Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
If you downloaded iv_formats.zip:
- Right-click the ZIP file.
- Select Extract All.
- Open the extracted folder.
- Copy the supplied plug-in files into the
PlugInsdirectory inside the IrfanView 32-bit installation. - Approve administrator permission if Windows requests it.
The final location should resemble:
C:Program Files (x86)IrfanViewPlugInsfpx.dll
Your installation may be in a different folder. The important points are that fpx.dll is inside the PlugIns directory belonging to IrfanView 32-bit and that you are not mixing it with an IrfanView 64-bit folder.
Step 4: Test the plug-in
- Start IrfanView.
- Select File.
- Select Open.
- Choose a known-good
.fpximage. - Confirm that the image opens without the plug-in error.
If the error disappears, the missing plug-in was the cause. If IrfanView still reports that FPX cannot be loaded, continue with the architecture and folder checks below.
Fix 2: Correct a 32-bit and 64-bit mismatch
The official FPX entry is marked for IrfanView 32-bit. Installing it into the 64-bit program folder can leave the file present but unusable.

IrfanView 32-bit and IrfanView 64-bit can coexist, but they should remain in separate folders with their matching plug-ins.

Check the application architecture
- Start the IrfanView installation that produces the error.
- Select Help.
- Select About IrfanView.
- Read the architecture information shown in the About window.
- Close IrfanView.
If you are using IrfanView 64-bit, install IrfanView 32-bit separately from the official IrfanView download page. Then install the official 32-bit plug-in package into the new 32-bit installation.
Do not try to make the FPX plug-in work by copying it between these folders:
C:Program Files
C:Program Files (x86)
Do not copy it into either of these Windows directories:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
Those folders are not the correct installation location for an IrfanView plug-in.

- Open the IrfanView installation folder used by the shortcut you launch.
- Open its
PlugInsfolder. - Confirm that
fpx.dllis present. - Right-click the file and select Properties.
- On the General tab, clear Unblock if Windows displays that option.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Start IrfanView again.
If the file is present but the error remains, reinstall the official package rather than overwriting it with a file from another source.
Fix 3: Check whether the plug-in is disabled or blocked
A plug-in can exist in the correct directory and still fail because the application is using a different installation, the file permissions are restricted, or the plug-in has been disabled.
Try these checks:
- Close every IrfanView window.
- Reopen the installation folder from the shortcut you actually use.
- Confirm that this folder contains the
PlugInsfpx.dllpath. - Start IrfanView as administrator once:
- Open the Start menu.
- Type
IrfanView. - Right-click it.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Try opening the
.fpximage again.
If it works only as administrator, close IrfanView and inspect the permissions on the IrfanView folder. Avoid permanently running all applications as administrator unless necessary.
Also check IrfanView’s installed-plug-ins or settings interface, if available in your version, to confirm that the FPX plug-in has not been disabled. If you have multiple IrfanView shortcuts, remove or update the shortcut that points to the wrong installation.
Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may quarantine a plug-in after detecting suspicious behavior, especially when the file is old or when the application opens an unusual image format.

Do not restore the file immediately.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Open the detection associated with
fpx.dllor IrfanView. - Read the detection name and file path.
- Confirm whether the path belongs to the official IrfanView installation.
- If the origin is uncertain, leave the file quarantined.
- If the file came from the official IrfanView package and the detection is trusted as a false positive, use the available Restore or Allow on device option only after reviewing the warning.
If you downloaded the DLL separately, do not restore that copy. Remove it and reinstall the complete plug-in package from the official IrfanView source.
After restoring or reinstalling:
- Restart Windows.
- Open IrfanView.
- Test a known-good
.fpximage. - If Windows Security quarantines the file again, stop using that copy and investigate the detection rather than repeatedly bypassing it.
Fix 5: Repair an incomplete IrfanView installation
A failed update, damaged archive extraction, disk problem, or cleanup utility may remove files from IrfanView’s folder. The vendor also warns that cleanup programs can alter or remove application files.
Reinstall both the application and its plug-ins:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for IrfanView.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the relevant entry.
- Select Uninstall.
- Follow the uninstall wizard.
- Restart Windows.
- Download IrfanView 32-bit from the official IrfanView website.
- Install it into a clear, dedicated folder.
- Download and install the official 32-bit plug-in package.
- Open the new installation and test the
.fpxfile.
If the installer or ZIP archive appears incomplete, download it again from the official source. Do not use a file size or hash copied from an unofficial site to judge whether the package is genuine.

Fix 6: Determine whether the image file is the real problem
If IrfanView starts normally and fails only when opening one .fpx image, the DLL may not be the primary problem. The image could be damaged or specially crafted.
Test the plug-in with another known-good FlashPix file. If other .fpx files open but one file crashes or triggers an error, do not keep reopening the problem file.
Older FPX parsing code has had publicly recorded security vulnerabilities. Treat an unexpected .fpx attachment or download as untrusted, particularly if it came from an unknown sender.
The safe response is to obtain a clean copy from a trusted source or convert the image using a current, maintained workflow. Do not disable antivirus protection just to open one suspicious image.
Fix 7: Use Windows repair commands only for broader corruption
fpx.dll is an IrfanView plug-in, so Windows repair commands will not normally download or reconstruct it. Use them only when other protected Windows files are also failing or Windows shows broader corruption.
Open an elevated terminal:
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes when User Account Control asks for permission.
Run DISM first:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run System File Checker:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands complete and test IrfanView again.

Success means DISM completes without an error and SFC reports that it repaired files or found no integrity violations. If either command reports an error, copy the exact message and address that Windows problem separately. Do not expect SFC or DISM to place an IrfanView plug-in in its PlugIns folder.

Fix 8: Update Windows and check drivers only when symptoms are broader
A display driver does not normally provide fpx.dll, and updating a driver is not the standard repair for an absent IrfanView plug-in. Consider this step only if IrfanView, other image applications, or Windows graphics functions began failing after a system change.
To check drivers through Windows:
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the listed adapter.
- Select Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
Do not uninstall a working driver merely because fpx.dll is missing. If IrfanView remains the only affected application, return to the official plug-in installation.

If the problem began immediately after a cleanup utility, software installation, or system change, System Restore may return Windows to an earlier configuration without removing personal documents.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Create a restore point.
- Open the matching Control Panel result.
- Select System Restore.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore can affect installed programs and system settings. Review the affected programs list before confirming. Afterward, reinstall the official IrfanView plug-in if fpx.dll is still absent.
What not to do
Do not download an isolated DLL
Random DLL download websites can provide malware, an altered file, the wrong architecture, or a file that belongs to a different product. A replacement may also hide the real problem, such as a missing plug-in package or a second IrfanView installation.
Use the official IrfanView installer or iv_formats.zip instead.

Do not copy the file into Windows system folders
fpx.dll is not identified as a Microsoft Windows component. Copying it into System32 or SysWOW64 can create confusion and may cause another application to load the wrong file.
Do not use regsvr32 for this plug-in
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by COM or ActiveX components. IrfanView loads FPX as an application plug-in.
This command is not a normal repair:
regsvr32 fpx.dll
It may produce an entry-point error and will not install the plug-in into IrfanView. Put the official plug-in in the correct PlugIns directory instead.

Do not assume the plug-in must match the main program number
The main IrfanView release and FPX plug-in listing use different version information. Match the package and architecture, not just the number printed in an error message or on an unofficial download page.
If fpx.dll is still not fixed
Work through this short checklist:
- Confirm that the error comes from the IrfanView installation you actually launch.
- Confirm that the installation is IrfanView 32-bit.
- Confirm that
fpx.dllis inside that installation’sPlugInsfolder. - Remove any manually copied DLL and reinstall the official package.
- Check Windows Security Protection history.
- Test a different
.fpxfile. - Reinstall both IrfanView 32-bit and its plug-ins.

Is fpx.dll a Windows file?
