What is wfxut32i.dll?
wfxut32i.dll is a 32-bit Win32 application DLL described as “WFXUTIL non-MFC library.” It is part of Symantec Fax Starter Edition, which was supplied with some installations of Outlook 2000 and Office 2000.
It is not identified as a protected Windows component. Windows 10 and Windows 11 do not normally need this file for ordinary operation. If the error appears on a modern computer, an old Office installation, a fax printer, an Office shortcut, or a legacy application is probably trying to load it.
Historical Office documentation places the file in an Office language directory similar to:

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallC:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice1033
The exact path can vary according to the Office installation, language, drive, and system configuration. The correct location is determined by the parent application’s installer, not by Windows’ generic DLL folders.
Why the error appears
The most likely causes are:
- Symantec Fax Starter Edition was removed or only partially installed.
- Someone deleted or renamed the DLL or related fax files.
- Antivirus software quarantined a legitimate old Office file.
- The Office installation source or media is damaged.
- Old Office files were moved to another folder.
- A fax printer or Outlook integration remains after the main feature was removed.
- A legacy Office component is being launched on a modern Windows installation where it is no longer fully compatible.
The component contains more than one file. Restoring only wfxut32i.dll may leave related files missing, including other fax libraries, services, setup files, or printer integration components. That is why reinstalling the complete fax feature is preferable to replacing one DLL.
Fix 1: Reinstall Symantec Fax Starter Edition from Office Setup
This is the most likely solution when the error appears while starting Outlook, an Office application, or a fax-related printer.
Before you start
Locate the original Office 2000 CD, installation files, or network installation share. You may need the original product key or administrator access.
Do not use a random DLL download as a substitute for the installation source. The file may be the wrong architecture, altered, incomplete, or bundled with unwanted software.
Installation steps
- Close Outlook and all Office programs.
- Insert the original Office 2000 disc, or open the folder containing the Office installation files.
- Open the disc or folder in File Explorer.
- Double-click
Setup.exe. - Select Add or Remove Features.
- Expand Microsoft Outlook for Windows.
- Locate Symantec Fax Starter Edition.
- Open its feature menu.
- Select Run from My Computer.
- Continue through Setup.
- Restart Windows when installation finishes.
- Start Outlook or the program that previously displayed the error.
If Setup asks for a specific cabinet file or installation source, point it to the original Office media. Do not satisfy the request with files copied from an unrelated computer.
If the fax wizard does not start
The archived Office procedure identifies Olfsetup.exe as the fax setup program. After installing the feature, locate Olfsetup.exe in the Office installation files and run it. You may need to open the file’s context menu and choose Run as administrator.

Afterward, test the fax feature or restart Outlook. If the error remains, continue with the checks below rather than copying another DLL into a Windows folder.
How to tell whether this worked
The repair succeeded if:
- Outlook or the affected Office program opens without the DLL message.
- The fax printer or fax command appears normally.
- Windows no longer displays an error mentioning
wfxut32i.dll. - Office Setup no longer reports Symantec Fax Starter Edition as missing.
If Setup repeatedly requests files or stops with an error, the installation media may be damaged or incompatible with the current Windows version. In that situation, removing the obsolete fax feature or migrating to supported fax software is usually safer than repeatedly forcing the installation.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine an old executable or DLL. This is especially possible with legacy software that has not been updated for many years.
Do not automatically restore the file. First confirm that the detection refers to the legitimate Office installation and that the file was not downloaded from an unknown source.
Check Protection History
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Under Current threats, select Protection history.
- Review recent quarantined items.
- Open an item that refers to the Office directory, Symantec Fax Starter Edition, or
wfxut32i.dll. - Review the file path and detection details.
Restore the file only when all of the following are true:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- The path belongs to the legitimate Office installation.
- You recognize the Office installation and its source.
- The file was not obtained from a DLL download page.
- You have scanned the computer and understand the detection.
If the file came from an unknown installer, leave it quarantined and remove that software. Microsoft warns that allowing a detected file can expose the device when the detection is genuine.
The safer approach for a legitimate Office file is still to reinstall the complete fax feature from the original Office media. That restores related files and avoids relying on a possibly altered quarantined copy.
Fix 3: Remove the fax feature if you no longer need it
Many users encounter this error because an old fax integration remains after Office has been partially removed. If you do not use Symantec Fax Starter Edition, removing the component is often the cleanest fix.
Remove it through Office Setup
- Close Outlook and other Office applications.
- Open the original Office 2000 installation source.
- Run
Setup.exe. - Select Add or Remove Features.
- Expand Microsoft Outlook for Windows.
- Select Symantec Fax Starter Edition.
- Choose Not Available.
- Continue through Setup.
- Restart Windows.
The historical removal procedure also covers removing the fax account, associated files, printer driver, and registry entries. Do not delete registry entries casually. If manual cleanup is necessary, back up the registry first and have an experienced administrator perform the work.
Remove an orphaned fax printer
If the DLL error is triggered by a fax printer:
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Choose the old fax printer.
- Select Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
The exact printer name can vary. It may refer to Symantec Fax, Outlook faxing, or another legacy fax provider.

If the printer cannot be removed from Settings, open Control Panel, select View devices and printers, right-click the fax printer, and choose Remove device.
Fix 4: Identify the program that is actually requesting the DLL
Do not assume that every wfxut32i.dll message comes directly from Outlook. A shortcut, printer utility, startup item, or third-party fax application may be the caller.
Use these checks:
- Note when the message appears.
- If it appears after clicking a shortcut, right-click the shortcut and select Properties.
- Review the Target field.
- Check whether the target points to Outlook, an Office folder, or a fax utility.
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Select Startup apps.
- Disable an old fax-related startup entry temporarily.
- Restart Windows and test again.
You can also check Event Viewer:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Look for an error at the time the DLL message appeared.
- Review the application name and executable path.
If the caller is not Outlook, Office, or a fax component, repair or remove that specific program instead. Reinstalling Office will not fix an unrelated application that happens to request the same filename.

Fix 5: Update or reinstall related printer drivers
A legacy fax printer can trigger the error when Windows starts a print or fax operation. First remove the obsolete fax printer as described above. If a physical printer or multifunction device is also failing, install its driver from the device manufacturer’s official support page.
Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, and Imaging devices.
- Look for a warning icon or an unknown device.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Uninstall device if the driver is clearly corrupt.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current driver supplied by the hardware manufacturer.
- Test printing or fax-related software again.
Do not expect a printer driver update to recreate wfxut32i.dll. It addresses the driver side of the problem only. The definitive repair for this file remains reinstalling or removing the parent fax component.
Manually hunting through old driver packages can mean guessing which architecture and release match the device. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers, with repairs and driver installation handled by the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling Symantec Fax Starter Edition remains the definitive fix for this DLL.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components only when other system files are failing
wfxut32i.dll is not identified as a Windows system file, so System File Checker is not the primary repair for this error. Use Windows component repair when you also see failures involving built-in Windows tools, system DLLs, updates, or Settings.

- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Restart Windows.
Run System File Checker
Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows afterward.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the affected application again. If it reports that it could not repair some files, run DISM first, restart, and then run sfc /scannow again.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing which component changed can waste time. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows issues and shows what needs attention, while repair is performed by the full version; it is optional and does not replace reinstalling the legacy fax component.
Fix 7: Use System Restore for a recent change
System Restore can help if the error began immediately after removing Office files, installing a driver, or changing system software.
- Press
Windows+R. - Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore normally does not remove personal documents, but it can remove applications, drivers, and system changes installed after the selected restore point. If there is no suitable restore point, return to the Office repair or removal procedure.

Why copying the DLL is usually wrong
Copying wfxut32i.dll into System32 or SysWOW64 does not repair the Office component.
The file is a 32-bit application DLL. On 64-bit Windows, System32 is the native 64-bit system directory, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit Windows system components. Neither folder is the correct default home for this Office application file.
A manually copied file can also be:
- The wrong historical build.
- The wrong architecture.
- Missing related fax files.
- Incompatible with the installed Office language or configuration.
- Altered or malicious.
The application should load its DLL from its own installation directory or another path configured by its installer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsShould you use regsvr32?
Usually, no.
regsvr32 is intended for self-registering OLE and ActiveX DLLs that provide a DllRegisterServer entry point. It is not a general-purpose missing-DLL repair command. There is no evidence that wfxut32i.dll requires manual registration.
Running a command such as this may simply produce an error:
regsvr32 wfxut32i.dll
Do not switch between the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of regsvr32 as a guessing exercise. Reinstall the parent Office feature instead.
32-bit and 64-bit considerations
wfxut32i.dll is associated with legacy 32-bit software. A 32-bit DLL can be loaded by a 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows, but only when the application and its supporting files are installed correctly.
Do not place the DLL in both system directories. Do not assume that installing a 64-bit runtime will help. The error concerns an old fax application’s files, not a modern Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, or .NET assembly.
On Windows 11 or Windows 10, the larger issue may be compatibility. Office 2000 and Symantec Fax Starter Edition are legacy products and are not modern supported fax solutions. Even if the DLL is restored, the fax workflow may still fail because of drivers, permissions, printer support, or operating-system compatibility.
Frequently asked questions
Is wfxut32i.dll part of Windows?
No evidence indicates that it ships with Windows itself. It is associated with Symantec Fax Starter Edition and historical Office fax integration.

Which program installed it?
The most common parent product is Symantec Fax Starter Edition supplied with some Outlook 2000 or Office 2000 installations. Related Symantec or WinFax installations may also have distributed similar fax components.
Is the file 32-bit or 64-bit?
Available file references identify it as a 32-bit Win32 DLL. It belongs to legacy 32-bit software.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
No. There is no evidence that wfxut32i.dll is a modern Microsoft runtime component. Those packages should not be the primary fix.
Can I download the DLL separately?
No current official standalone Microsoft or Symantec download for this DLL has been identified. Use the original licensed Office installation source, or remove the obsolete feature if it is no longer needed.
Why did the error start after antivirus software ran?
The file or a related fax executable may have been quarantined. Review Protection History, but restore files only when their original Office location and legitimacy are clear. Reinstalling the complete feature is safer than restoring an isolated file.
What if I do not have the Office 2000 CD?
Do not use an unknown DLL download. Identify the program requesting the file and remove the obsolete fax integration, or migrate to supported fax software. If the old Office installation is business-critical, consult the administrator who maintains its licensed installation media and compatibility plan.
What if the error remains after reinstalling the feature?
Confirm the calling executable, check for an orphaned fax printer, review Event Viewer, and verify that Setup installed the feature into the expected Office directory. If the error occurs only with one Windows user, test another user profile before editing system files.
Is the file malware?
The filename alone does not prove that a file is safe or malicious. Check its path, source, antivirus result, and relationship to the installed Office software. Do not trust a copy simply because it has the expected filename.
Final repair checklist
Use this order:
- Identify the program displaying the error.
- Reinstall Symantec Fax Starter Edition through the original Office 2000 Setup source.
- Run
Olfsetup.exeif the fax wizard does not start. - Check Windows Security Protection History.
- Remove the fax feature and printer if you no longer need it.
- Check related devices and drivers in Device Manager.
- Run DISM and SFC only if broader Windows corruption is also present.
- Use System Restore only for a recent, identifiable system change.
- Avoid DLL download sites, System32 copying, and unnecessary
regsvr32commands.
For this particular file, repairing the parent fax installation or removing the obsolete fax integration is safer and more complete than replacing wfxut32i.dll by itself.
