The Arma 3 dedicated-server software costs nothing, but a public server still consumes hardware, electricity, upload bandwidth and administration time. Your realistic choices are self-hosting on a PC, using a time-limited hosting trial, or trying a free-tier virtual private server (VPS). For a server that must run continuously for a community, plan on paying for hosting or supplying your own suitable hardware.

What “free Arma 3 hosting” actually includes
“Free” can describe different parts of the arrangement. Bohemia Interactive distributes the dedicated-server package without a separate server-software fee, and a Steam account is required to install it. That does not make the computer, network connection or electricity free. A host may also advertise a zero-price VPS or a trial that expires after a short period.

Option 1: Run the dedicated server yourself
Self-hosting is the only route that can remain free indefinitely, provided you already own the equipment and accept its operating costs. You can use a spare desktop, a rented machine you already control, or a separate computer on your home network. Running the server on the same PC on which you play saves hardware, but the game and server compete for CPU, memory, storage and network upload.
Official hardware guidance
Bohemia Interactive’s published guidance lists a 2.4 GHz dual-core processor, 2 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage as minimums. Its recommended figures are a 3.5 GHz quad-core processor, 4 GB of RAM and a 32 GB SSD. The figures come from a BI wiki page that was not re-checked for this article, so confirm the current requirements before buying hardware. They are not a guaranteed player capacity: Bohemia has not published a per-player load table, and missions, AI counts, scripts and mods can change server load substantially.

Self-hosting setup sequence
- Choose the machine. Prefer a wired network connection and an SSD. If you play on the same computer, watch CPU, RAM and frame-time usage while the server is busy.
- Install the official package. Use Steam tools with a Steam account to obtain the Arma 3 dedicated-server files. Keep the server files separate from your personal game installation so updates and configuration are easier to manage.
- Create a clean baseline. Start with a simple mission and no optional mods. Record the server name, password, administrator settings and save locations before adding complexity.
- Configure the network. A public server needs a reachable address and correctly configured firewall and router rules. If your internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT, incoming connections may be impossible without a public address or a provider-supported alternative. Confirm this with your ISP rather than assuming port forwarding will work.
- Test locally, then remotely. Join from the host machine first, then from another device on the same network, and finally ask someone outside your network to connect. A local success does not prove that internet players can reach the server.
- Add mods gradually. Test one collection at a time, keep client and server versions aligned, and retain a known-good configuration. A mod that loads on a client can still cause server-side script errors or excessive simulation work.
- Automate routine care. Schedule restarts, back up configuration and mission files, rotate logs, and apply game and mod updates during a maintenance window. Keep an offline copy of the last working setup so a bad update can be rolled back.
Advantages and limits
- Advantages: no monthly host bill, full control over files and settings, and no trial expiration.
- Limits: your upload connection and electricity become the bottleneck; the server stops when the machine or home connection stops; troubleshooting, security and backups are your responsibility.
- Privacy and reliability: exposing a home network requires careful firewall rules and a separate server account where possible. Do not open unrelated services or share administrative credentials.
Option 2: Use a game-server free trial
A trial is convenient when you want to test a mission, mod pack or control panel without changing your router. It is not a permanent free server. Read the end date, renewal procedure, storage limits, suspension policy and data-retention terms before uploading a community setup.

What is currently advertised
Legion Hosting publishes a page titled “Start Your Free Arma 3 Server Trial.” The page should be treated as the authority for its current duration, card requirement, resource limits and conversion terms; those details can change. Public search summaries have described a 48-hour, no-card offer, but that specific duration and payment condition were not confirmed from the provider page.
Search listings have also described a 48-hour trial from PingPerfect and a requirement to contact support before the trial ends to keep the server, with a lowest paid plan reported at about $10.45 per month. Those details were not verified on a provider page, so do not rely on them without checking the live terms. If you choose any trial, set a calendar reminder at least a day before expiry and download your configuration and mission files first.
Trial checklist
- Confirm whether the trial is actually for Arma 3 rather than a generic game-server credit.
- Check whether a credit card, identity check or support ticket is required.
- Record the exact expiration time and the price after the trial.
- Ask whether the server is deleted, suspended or retained when the trial ends.
- Test the control panel, file manager, mod installation process, restart controls and backups before inviting a community.
- Measure real player experience with your intended mission; a lightly loaded test may hide CPU or network limits.
Option 3: Try a free-tier VPS
A VPS gives you a virtual Linux or Windows machine rather than a game-specific control panel. You install and maintain the dedicated server yourself, so this route is closer to self-hosting than to managed game hosting.

A HostAdvice roundup lists $0.00 starting prices for several general hosting companies, including Kamatera, IONOS and InterServer. “Starting at $0” does not establish that a qualifying Arma 3 instance is free forever, has enough resources, includes public IPv4, or permits the traffic you need. Read the current service terms, region availability, bandwidth policy and cancellation rules before creating an account.
Cybernews cautions that free VPS services often deliver poor performance or encourage an upgrade. That matters especially for Arma 3: a small shared virtual CPU, noisy neighbors, low memory or throttled disk can produce simulation delays even when the server technically starts.
VPS checks before installation
- CPU: verify sustained performance, not only a headline virtual-core count.
- Memory: compare available RAM with the BI guidance and leave room for the operating system and mods.
- Storage: ensure enough capacity for the server, workshop content, logs and backups.
- Network: confirm a publicly reachable IPv4 address, inbound firewall control and an allowed game-server port. Reports about IPv6-only or DS-Lite connections not working with Arma 3 are not confirmed by an official source here, so verify your exact network path.
- Policy: check whether game servers, sustained traffic and automated processes are allowed on the free tier.
- Lifecycle: look for idle shutdown, monthly quotas, account verification, region restrictions and automatic billing after a promotional period.
A free VPS is most sensible for learning, configuration testing or a small lightly modded group. It is a poor assumption for a busy public server unless you have measured performance under the actual mission and player load.

Common failure points and fixes
The server starts but nobody outside the house can join
Check the host firewall, router forwarding, the address players are using and whether your ISP places you behind carrier-grade NAT. Test from a genuinely external connection. If the ISP does not provide an inbound-capable address, self-hosting may require an approved tunnel or a different connection; do not expose random ports or disable the firewall wholesale.

Players experience lag or delayed AI
Remove optional mods, lower AI and script-heavy mission settings, and monitor CPU, memory and disk usage while the problem occurs. On a VPS, compare performance at different times to detect shared-host contention. The published BI hardware figures are baselines, not a promise of a particular player count.
A trial ends and the server disappears
Export configuration, mission files, mod lists and passwords before the deadline. A reminder is not enough if the provider deletes data immediately at expiry. If retention is unclear, ask support in writing before you invest time in a full community setup.

A free VPS asks for payment
Stop before entering billing details and reread the offer’s quota and renewal section. A $0 starting price can mean a limited credit, a short promotion or a free control-plane account while compute is billable. Set spending alerts and remove unused resources.
Clients cannot load the same mods
Compare exact mod versions and load order, verify that the server has every required dependency, and test with a minimal collection. Keep a documented, known-good mod list so you can restore service after an update.

Even when the hosting line is zero, self-hosting consumes electricity and upload bandwidth and may shorten the useful life of the machine. Free trials consume administration time and can force a migration at short notice. Free VPS tiers trade money for limits, uncertainty and maintenance. For a persistent community, a modest paid plan or dedicated hardware is usually the honest budget category because it buys continuity rather than merely avoiding an invoice today.
Before committing, write down the maximum monthly amount you can tolerate, the hours the server must be online, the largest mod collection you expect, and who will administer updates and backups. If any of those requirements cannot be met by the free route, choose reliability over the label “free.”
