That convenience does not remove the resource ceiling. In an Aternos community discussion, staff wrote: “Since Aternos is 100% free, it’s not possible to get more RAM.” In another discussion, staff explained that a pack needing less than 4 GB would not start on the available allocation and that the pack was removed from the list. Aternos staff also say they test listed modpacks to ensure they start and that basic playing is possible, while warning that they cannot guarantee performance. That distinction matters: “listed” means a basic launch test passed at some point, not that your chosen world, player count or mod configuration will remain stable.
What the queue and shutdown reports mean
Reviewers disagree about the exact waiting time. One account reports roughly 2–10 minutes during busy periods; another reports waits as long as 30 minutes. Treat both as variable examples, not service-level commitments. Reviews also describe servers stopping after about five minutes with no players. Current official idle rules were not available, so check the panel’s current notice rather than planning an unattended 24/7 world.

Ads, account verification and possible network or VPN restrictions are part of the trade-off for no hosting bill. A free host can also throttle or stop a server when demand is high. Warn your group that a session may require starting the server and waiting before anyone can connect.
Can I run All The Mods or a large Better Minecraft pack for free?
Usually not reliably. “All The Mods” is a family of releases with different versions and resource demands, so there is no single yes-or-no requirement. The relevant test is the exact pack version’s documented memory recommendation compared with the host’s live allocation. If it expects 6 GB, 8 GB or more, a typical free tier is not an appropriate target. Even a pack that launches at a lower setting can crash later as exploration generates chunks and automation increases tick load.
For Better Minecraft, distinguish a small or older edition from a current, content-heavy release. Select the precise Minecraft, Forge or Fabric version in the host panel, then compare the pack’s launcher recommendation with the available RAM. If the host does not disclose a number, consider that a risk rather than assuming the pack is supported.

How to try a small modpack on a free host
- Identify the exact pack. Record its Minecraft version, loader (Forge or Fabric), pack version and recommended memory. Do not mix files from different loader or game versions.
- Confirm the host’s current allocation. Read the server dashboard, help text and software-selection page. Capture the displayed RAM and player limit because free tiers can change.
- Use the host’s pack installer first. On a panel-based service, choose the matching Forge or Fabric release and then the listed pack. An installer reduces dependency and version mistakes compared with uploading individual mods.
- Match client and server files. Every player should install the same pack version, loader and configuration. Remove client-only visual mods from the server when the pack documentation says they do not belong there.
- Start an empty test world. Watch the console for Java heap errors, missing dependencies, mixin failures and “server stopped” messages. Do not import your main world until the server survives a basic launch.
- Test with one or two players. Travel a short distance, generate new chunks and use the pack’s main machines or mobs. This exposes memory growth and tick overload that a startup test misses.
- Make conservative settings changes. Lower view and simulation distance, limit entity-heavy farms and avoid pre-generating large areas. These changes cannot create more RAM, but they reduce peak load.
- Back up before adding content. Keep a downloadable copy of the world and configuration. A failed update or forced shutdown should not be your only copy.
Diagnosing “modpack server crashes” on a free host
It never reaches the world
- Check that the loader, Minecraft version and pack version match on both sides.
- Read the first error in the console, not only the final “server stopped” line. Missing dependencies and wrong Java versions often appear earlier.
- Remove recently added mods and test in batches. A free host’s memory limit can turn a borderline pack into an immediate out-of-memory failure.
- If staff or the panel indicates the pack needs 4 GB or more, stop changing individual files: the allocation itself is the blocker.
It starts, then crashes during play
Community threads describe packs that work initially and crash later as memory usage grows. New chunks, entities, machines, dimensions and large storage systems all increase load. Reproduce the crash with a backup, note what players were doing, and inspect the log for an out-of-memory error or a specific mod. Reduce view distance and entity activity, remove the offending feature if the pack permits it, and test again. If the same failure returns without a clear mod error, the free allocation is probably insufficient for sustained play.
Players cannot connect
- Confirm that the server is fully started rather than still in a queue.
- Verify the address, port, game version and loader shown by the host.
- Check whether an empty-server shutdown stopped the process between attempts.
- Have every player disable mismatched client-only additions and install the exact server pack release.
When another free option makes sense
Choose Minehut only for a plugin-based server if its reported 1 GB and 10-player limits are still current; reviews say it does not provide Forge or Fabric. A promotional 4 GB, no-queue and 24/7 offer from FreeGameHost could look attractive, but those figures are marketing claims and should be confirmed in writing before you upload a world. OMGSERV is described as vanilla-only in the cited material, so it does not solve a modpack requirement. Oracle Cloud can provide control for an experienced administrator willing to configure Linux, Java, backups, firewall rules and updates; it is not a one-click free modpack service and reportedly requires a credit card. Treat ScalaCube’s free-plan wording as something to verify pack by pack rather than proof of unrestricted mod support.

Move to a paid plan when the exact pack’s recommendation exceeds the free allocation, the server crashes after routine exploration, or your group needs predictable uptime. Staff discussions point users toward a paid host for heavy packs because a free service cannot add the required memory. A review opinion places heavy-modpack hosting around $5–$12 per month, but that is not a current universal price; compare the provider’s present RAM, storage, backups, CPU policy, player limits and cancellation terms.

Paying does not fix an incompatible mod list automatically. You still need matching versions, backups and sensible view distance. The benefit is a larger, explicitly allocated memory budget and fewer free-tier interruptions, not a guarantee that every pack will perform well.
A practical decision checklist
- Small pack, two to four players, occasional sessions: Try a panel-based free host after checking its live RAM and software version.
- Current Better Minecraft or automation-heavy pack: Assume the free tier is a test environment unless its documented memory requirement fits with headroom.
- All The Mods or another pack requiring at least 4 GB: Expect failure or instability on common free allocations; plan a paid host.
- Need continuous availability: Avoid relying on a free service until its idle and queue rules meet your schedule.
- Need full control and have Linux administration experience: A general cloud free tier may work, but budget time for setup, security and maintenance.
Bottom line for a free Forge/Fabric server
Free hosting is viable for a carefully chosen, lightweight modpack and a small group. Aternos is the clearest starting point because it offers Forge, Fabric and a panel-based pack installer, but its ads, queues, shutdown behavior and fixed memory ceiling are part of the deal. Do not interpret a pack listing as a performance guarantee. Check the current RAM figure, test the exact version in an empty world and keep backups. If the pack needs 4 GB or more, grows unstable over time or must stay online, free hosting is the wrong capacity class and paid memory is the practical fallback.
