Decide who will maintain the machine, how many people will play at once, and whether you need the server online all day. Divine Journey 2 is a large Forge 1.12.2 pack, not a lightweight vanilla world. Reserve memory for the operating system and background services instead of assigning every available gigabyte to Minecraft.
- A Minecraft Java Edition account and client: Bedrock clients cannot join a Forge Java server.
- The exact pack release: Write down the release name or number you install. Every player should install that same release.
- A 64-bit operating system and Java installation: Check the server pack’s current README on CurseForge for the supported Java version. Java 8 is commonly associated with Minecraft 1.12.2, but the official requirement was not confirmed in the available documentation, so do not treat Java 8 as guaranteed until the README confirms it.
- Memory: Hosting guidance varies. Providers commonly suggest 6–8 GB for a small group and 10–12 GB for 10 or more players; another provider recommends 8 GB, with 6 GB as a minimum. These are provider estimates rather than an official requirement.
- Storage and backups: Keep enough free disk space for the server files, generated world, logs, backups, and future pack updates. Leave additional headroom rather than running the disk nearly full.

Managed hosting or self-hosting?
Both approaches run the same Forge pack. The difference is who supplies the machine and handles its maintenance.

Some hosting panels advertise installation in roughly 10–15 minutes, but that figure is not tied to a verified provider or a particular plan. Treat it as an optimistic setup estimate, not a service-level promise.

1. Create the correct server type
- Open the host’s game-server creation page.
- Choose Minecraft Java Edition, not a Bedrock-only product or a vanilla template.
- Select a plan with at least the memory suggested for your group. For a few players, 6–8 GB is the range providers commonly mention; a group of 10 or more should plan around 10–12 GB, subject to the host’s own testing and limits.
- Prefer a plan that states its CPU model or gives meaningful per-core performance information. More virtual cores do not automatically compensate for a slow primary core.
2. Use the modpack installer
- Open the panel’s Modpacks, Modpack installer, or Quick install tab. Labels differ between hosts.
- Search for Divine Journey 2. Select the official listing rather than manually uploading an unrelated Forge profile.
- Compare the available release numbers with the current CurseForge listing. The 2026 listing displayed
Divine_Journey_2.23.4as its latest release at that time; a newer release may exist when you install. - Confirm the installation warning. A modpack installation normally replaces or creates server files, so do not run it over a world you intend to keep unless the panel offers a verified backup.
- Start the installation and wait for the panel to report completion. Do not close the browser or restart the server while it is downloading and unpacking files.
3. Start and verify the first boot
- Press Start in the panel and open its live console or log view.
- On the first run, wait for Forge and the pack to create configuration files and a world. The first boot can take substantially longer than later restarts.
- If the console reports that the EULA must be accepted, stop the server, open the file or panel control it identifies, set the EULA value to accept the Minecraft terms, save it, and start again. Only accept the EULA after reading it.
- Wait for the console to indicate that the server is ready for connections. A process that is merely running is not necessarily ready; Forge may still be loading mods.
- Copy the server address shown by the panel. Give players the address exactly as displayed, including a port if the panel includes one.
4. Make the first connection
- Each player installs the same Divine Journey 2 release in a Minecraft Java launcher that supports Forge 1.12.2.
- Launch that Forge profile once so the client creates its local files.
- In Minecraft, choose Multiplayer, then Add Server.
- Enter a recognizable name and paste the address from the hosting panel into Server Address.
- Connect only after the client profile and server release match. Keep the panel console visible during the first attempt so you can correlate a rejection with its log message.
Option 2: self-host the server pack
Self-hosting is more flexible but makes you responsible for Java, networking, permissions, updates, backups, and security. Use a dedicated folder and a dedicated server account where possible; do not mix the pack with unrelated Minecraft worlds.
1. Download and prepare the server files
- Open the Divine Journey 2 listing on CurseForge and locate its server-pack download or server-owner documentation. Confirm the release number before downloading.
- Create a new folder dedicated to this server. Use a simple path without unusual characters, such as a folder you can easily identify as the Divine Journey 2 server.
- Download the server pack archive and extract its contents directly into that folder. Do not leave the launch script buried inside the compressed archive or an extra nested folder.
- Read the README included with the pack and the current server-owner README linked from CurseForge. Follow its Java and launch instructions if they differ from general Minecraft 1.12.2 practice.
2. Start on Windows
- Open the extracted server folder in File Explorer.
- Double-click
launch.bat. If Windows displays a security prompt, verify that the file came from the pack download you chose before allowing it to run. - Keep the command window open. The script should create or update the server files and produce a first-run log.
- If the window closes immediately, run the script from an already-open Command Prompt so the error remains visible. The message usually identifies a missing Java executable, an incorrect Java version, a permission problem, or a bad path.
- Do not launch multiple copies of the script. Two server processes writing to one world can corrupt it.
3. Start on Linux
- Open a terminal and change to the extracted server directory.
- Make the supplied script executable if necessary, for example with
chmod +x launch.sh. - Run
./launch.shfrom that directory. Keep the terminal attached for the first boot so you can see the complete error output. - For an always-on server, run the script under a service manager or a persistent terminal session after you have confirmed that it starts correctly. Configure automatic restarts only after you have a backup and understand how the script shuts down.
- Use a separate, non-root account for the Minecraft process where practical. Grant that account access only to the server directory and backup location.
4. Accept the EULA and complete first boot
- Stop the process if the log says the EULA has not been accepted. A clean stop is preferable to closing the terminal or killing the process.
- Open the generated EULA file in the server folder, read the Minecraft EULA, and change the acceptance setting as instructed by the file.
- Save the file and run the same launch script again.
- Wait for Forge to finish loading every mod and to create the world. Keep the log from this first successful start; it is useful when diagnosing later changes.
- Stop the server through its console command or the panel’s stop control before editing files, installing updates, or copying a world.
Memory, CPU, and Java decisions
How much RAM should you assign?
There is no single official number in the available pack documentation. Provider guidance places a small group in the 6–8 GB range and a 10-plus-player group around 10–12 GB. Another provider lists 8 GB as its recommendation and 6 GB as a minimum. Treat those figures as starting points: view distance, automation, chunk loading, exploration, and simultaneous players all affect actual use.

A low-quality, unverified blog mentions a 16 GB computer with 8–10 GB allocated to the server. That is not an authoritative requirement and should not be used as a universal target. Your operating system, desktop environment, backups, and other services need memory too.
Choose CPU speed before core count
One provider describes Divine Journey 2 as heavy on a single CPU core, which means per-core clock speed can influence tick rate more than a high core count. This is provider advice rather than an official benchmark. For self-hosting, avoid an old low-frequency processor simply because it has many cores. For managed hosting, ask whether the advertised CPU is shared and whether the plan exposes per-core performance.

The pack targets Forge 1.12.2. Java 8 is a common runtime choice for that Minecraft generation, but the available evidence did not verify an official Java requirement for the current Divine Journey 2 release. Check the pack’s server README before installing Java, and keep the selected runtime consistent between the launch script and the Java executable used by your operating system. If the log reports an unsupported class version, missing Java, or an invalid option, stop the server and correct the runtime before changing world files.
Be cautious with memory flags
A hosting recommendation suggests setting matching minimum and maximum memory values and using a set of performance flags often associated with modded servers. Because that advice was not tied to a verified configuration for this pack, do not paste flags blindly. Start with the launch script supplied by Divine Journey 2, change only the memory values documented by the pack or host, and make one change at a time so a failed boot can be reversed.

Networking and player access
Managed host
The panel normally displays a public hostname or address after the server is created. Use that exact value. If it includes a port, players must enter it in the same address field. A server can appear online in the panel while still loading Forge, so wait for the ready message before testing.
Home or office connection
A self-hosted machine must be reachable from outside your local network. Configure the operating system firewall and router according to your network equipment’s documentation, and forward only the Minecraft server port to the machine running the process. If your internet service uses carrier-grade NAT, inbound connections may not work without a public address or a supported relay solution. Do not publish your home IP more widely than necessary.

- Test from the same local network first, then from a different connection such as a phone hotspot.
- Keep the server console open and note the exact time of each connection attempt.
- If local players can join but remote players cannot, investigate firewall, router, public-address, or carrier-NAT issues rather than reinstalling the modpack.
Keep every client and server version aligned
Forge 1.12.2 is the loader and Minecraft version target. The pack release is a separate value. A player running a different Divine Journey 2 release can receive missing-mod, mismatched-mod, or registry errors even when both installations say Forge 1.12.2.
- Record the exact server pack release in your group’s instructions.
- Have every player update or downgrade to that release before troubleshooting network access.
- Do not copy individual mods from another release into the server unless the pack’s documentation explicitly instructs you to do so.
- When updating, stop the server, back up the world and configuration, install the new server files as directed, and test with a copy of the world first.
The CurseForge listing showed Divine_Journey_2.23.4 as the latest release at the time of the 2026 check, but that label can change. Always compare the server and client download pages on the day you install or update.

Backups, updates, and routine maintenance
Back up before any risky change
- Stop the server cleanly.
- Copy the complete world folder, configuration files, and any scripts or custom settings to a separate storage location.
- Label the backup with the pack release and date.
- Keep at least one backup away from the server machine so a disk failure or accidental deletion does not remove both copies.
- Start the server and verify that the world loads before deleting the old backup.
Update deliberately
Read the release notes and server README for the new pack version. Test updates on a duplicate world when possible; mod changes can alter block IDs, recipes, dimensions, or progression. Never assume that replacing only the client files updates the server. A managed panel may offer an update button, but you still need a backup and a plan to roll back.
Watch logs and disk space
Review the console after restarts and after players explore new areas. Repeated Java errors, out-of-memory messages, stalled ticks, or a rapidly growing log deserve attention. Keep free disk space for world generation and backups; a full disk can look like a mod or Java failure while preventing the server from saving.
Troubleshooting common failures
The server says the Java version is wrong
Stop the server and read the complete error, including the Java version it detected. Confirm the supported runtime in the current Divine Journey 2 server README, then point the launch script or host panel to that Java installation. Do not delete the world to solve a runtime mismatch.
The process runs out of memory
Check the host or operating-system memory graph and the Java allocation in the launch script. Make sure the machine still has memory for the operating system and services. Move from the lower end of the provider guidance toward the 8 GB or 10–12 GB ranges only when monitoring supports the change, and reduce unnecessary background services. If the machine is already swapping, adding virtual memory will not provide Minecraft with usable performance.

A player is rejected for missing mods or mismatched registries
Compare the player’s exact Divine Journey 2 release and Forge 1.12.2 profile with the server. Reinstall the client profile from the same release if files may be mixed. Do not solve the error by adding random versions of individual mods.
The launch script closes or does nothing
Run launch.bat from Command Prompt or ./launch.sh in a terminal and capture the first error. Check that the archive was fully extracted, the script has permission to execute, Java is installed and discoverable, and the account can write to the server folder. Restore the original script if it was edited and test again before changing memory flags.
Players cannot connect even though the server is running
Confirm that the console has finished loading, copy the address exactly as shown, and test locally before testing remotely. For a home server, recheck the firewall, router forwarding, public address, and any carrier-grade NAT limitation. For a managed host, open a support ticket with the panel’s address and the connection error rather than changing Forge files.
The world will not load after an update
Stop immediately and restore the pre-update backup to a separate test folder. Check the release notes and server README for migration instructions. Do not continue writing to a possibly damaged world while experimenting with different mod files.
