Free Discord Bot Hosting: Best Options and When to Use a VPS

Free hosting is fine for testing a Discord bot, but sleep policies, credit caps and changing eligibility make it risky for public 24/7 operation. Compare Oracle Cloud, Fly.io, Railway, Render, Replit and bot-focused hosts, then decide when a paid worker or VPS makes sense.

Free hosting is suitable for a private test bot, a learning project, or a small utility used in one server. It is a poor foundation for a public bot that must answer commands around the clock: free services commonly sleep, pause when credits run out, or change their eligibility rules. For dependable 24/7 operation, use a paid always-on plan or a VPS. Choose a VPS when you want full control and can administer Linux; choose managed hosting when you prefer Git-based deployment without server maintenance.

Start with the uptime question

A Discord bot is not a web page that can be generated only when somebody visits it. Most bots maintain a persistent Gateway connection to Discord. Your process must remain running, retain its network connection, and reconnect quickly after an interruption. A hosting plan that suspends an idle process therefore suspends the bot, even if the bot receives occasional commands.

That distinction explains most conflicting recommendations for “free Discord bot hosting.” A free plan can be genuinely useful for development while still being unsuitable for an always-on public bot. Evaluate the service by asking what happens when there is no HTTP traffic, when the monthly allowance is exhausted, and when the provider changes its free-account rules.

Free hosting options at a glance

Service Reported allowance or price Always-on reality Administration Best fit
Oracle Cloud Always Free Vendor guides describe one ARM instance with 4 OCPU and 24 GB RAM. Potentially always running, but inactive free resources have reportedly been reclaimed. Current terms need a live check. Full Linux server, networking rules and security configuration. Several small bots when you can manage a VPS.
Fly.io No free tier for new sign-ups is reported; the smallest always-on shared Machine (shared-cpu-1x, 256 MB) is reported at about $2.28 per month. New accounts should budget for pay-as-you-go billing. Older legacy-hobby accounts reportedly retain allowances that new accounts do not receive. CLI-based deployment and container configuration. Developers comfortable with command-line deployment and a small monthly bill.
Railway Free plan with a reported $1 monthly credit; a $5 first-month credit has also been reported. Hobby is reported at $5 per month. Services pause when the credit is exhausted. One estimate says $1 covers only a few hours of runtime. Low server administration; connect a repository and configure a start command. Short tests, prototypes and bots that can tolerate monthly pauses; Hobby for simple always-on use.
Render Free service with 512 MB memory and a reported 750 instance-hours per month; Starter is reported at $7 per month. Free services spin down after 15 minutes of inactivity, which breaks a Discord Gateway connection. Managed deployment with little operating-system work. Web services and development bots, not a free 24/7 Gateway worker.
Replit Current pricing lists a Core plan at $20 per month when billed annually. The free tier is described for personal projects with one background task. Whether the free plan supports a bot continuously is unconfirmed. Community reports describe bots going offline; uptime pingers are a workaround, not a guarantee. Browser-based editing and deployment. Learning and quick experiments, with paid Always On capacity if available to your account.
Discord-focused bot hosts Guides describe free plans with resource caps or bot-count limits; examples include Discloud and bot-hosting.net. Limits, suspension rules and reliability vary by host and can change. Usually simpler than a VPS, but with less control. Small experiments when you have checked the current limits and terms.

The figures above are reported plan details, not guarantees. Free allowances and prices change frequently, so verify the provider’s current terms, billing behavior and regional availability before moving a public bot.

How each option behaves

Oracle Cloud Always Free: the most capable free VM, with the most work

Vendor guides describe an always-free ARM virtual machine with 4 OCPU and 24 GB of memory, enough headroom for several lightweight bots and supporting services. The trade-off is that you receive a server, not a finished bot platform. You must choose an operating system image, configure a VCN and security lists, open only the ports you need, install your runtime, protect the bot token and keep the machine patched.

ARM architecture matters. A JavaScript or Python bot whose dependencies include native modules must have ARM-compatible builds; otherwise you may need to compile packages or select a different dependency. Oracle’s current Always Free terms were not verified here, and inactive free resources have reportedly been reclaimed. Treat the VM as valuable capacity with account and availability risk, not as an uptime guarantee.

Fly.io: small paid machines rather than a new-account free tier

Provider material reports that new sign-ups do not receive a free tier and require a payment card. A comparison published in 2026 reports about $2.28 per month for an always-on shared-cpu-1x Machine with 256 MB of memory. That is a predictable starting point for a very small bot, but the amount is a reported estimate rather than a verified quote from the provider’s live calculator.

Deployment is CLI-based. You package the bot, select a region, set encrypted environment variables and deploy a Machine. The model suits someone who is comfortable reading logs and scaling a small container. Do not plan around older “legacy-hobby” allowances: those accounts reportedly retain benefits that new accounts cannot obtain.

Railway: easy deployment, but free credit runs out

Railway’s pricing documentation is reported to include a Free plan with $1 of credit per month, with a $5 credit during the first month reported separately. When the credit is consumed, services pause until the next monthly allocation. One reviewer estimated that $1 supports only a few hours of runtime, so it cannot be treated as a free month of 24/7 operation.

The reported $5-per-month Hobby plan is the practical minimum for a continuously running small bot. Railway is attractive when you want repository-based deploys, environment variables and logs without managing Linux. Set a spending limit or billing alert before deploying, and confirm whether your bot’s memory, outbound traffic and build usage are metered separately.

Render: a convenient free web service that sleeps

Render’s free tier is reported to provide 512 MB and 750 instance-hours each month, but a free service spins down after 15 minutes without activity. A Discord bot’s Gateway connection is not the sort of request that keeps a sleep-prone web service awake, so the process disconnects when the instance sleeps. A separate always-on worker or paid service is required for reliable operation.

The reported Starter price is $7 per month. Render is a good fit for a bot dashboard, documentation site or development endpoint, and for a bot once you move to an always-on paid service. It is not a sound free solution merely because an HTTP health check can make the process appear busy; using pingers to defeat an explicit sleep policy is fragile and may conflict with provider rules.

Replit: fast setup, uncertain free-plan persistence

An older Replit Always On announcement described deploying a Discord bot in roughly 30 seconds on a paid Hacker plan. Current pricing lists Core at $20 per month when billed annually, while the free plan is described for personal projects with one background task. The current free-plan ability to run a bot continuously is not confirmed.

Community discussions report bots going offline and users trying uptime pingers. A pinger cannot restore a process that the platform is entitled to stop, so regard it as a temporary experiment rather than an uptime strategy. If you use Replit, check the current workspace’s background-task and sleep behavior, then confirm that the account’s plan explicitly permits the runtime you need.

Bot-specific hosts: simple, but read the limits

Bot-list and Discord-focused hosts advertise free plans with restrictions such as a maximum number of bots, low memory, limited storage, queueing or inactivity removal. The setup can be easier than a VPS, but you trade away operating-system control and often receive less documentation about backups, incidents and data retention. Check the current resource cap, restart policy, token handling, support expectations and export procedure before uploading production code.

What a Discord bot needs from its host

Persistent execution

The worker must remain active without browser traffic. A plan that sleeps after inactivity, pauses at a credit limit or stops background tasks will eventually disconnect the bot. Automatic reconnect logic in discord.js, discord.py, nextcord or disnake helps after a brief network interruption, but it cannot reconnect while the process is stopped.

Memory and CPU headroom

A commonly repeated rule of thumb puts a basic bot in roughly 256–512 MB of RAM, but no independent measurement in the available material establishes that range for every library or workload. Music playback, image generation, dashboards, databases, queues, large caches and many guilds can require substantially more. Measure the process under realistic load and leave room for dependency updates and temporary spikes.

Storage and data durability

Many free containers use ephemeral disks. If the bot stores configuration, moderation records or a small database locally, a restart or redeploy may erase it. Keep durable data in a service designed for persistence, export regular backups, or design the bot so that its state can be rebuilt from an external database.

Secrets and network access

Store the Discord token and API keys as encrypted environment variables, never in a public repository or image. Restrict outbound access where the host allows it, rotate a token immediately if it appears in logs, and avoid exposing an administrative port to the public internet unless it is authenticated and protected.

A practical evaluation checklist

  1. Confirm the process type. Verify that the plan permits a continuously running worker, not only a request-driven web service or scheduled job.
  2. Read the idle rule. Find the exact inactivity period, sleep behavior and wake-up time. A 15-minute sleep policy is enough to disqualify a free plan for a Gateway bot.
  3. Calculate paid runtime. Determine whether the allowance is measured in dollars, CPU time, memory, bandwidth or instance-hours. Convert the allowance into a full month of operation before deploying.
  4. Check account eligibility. Confirm whether the offer is limited to new accounts, particular regions, payment-card holders or older accounts grandfathered into a legacy plan.
  5. Estimate resources. Record memory use at startup and under command load, then add headroom for bursts, logs and updates.
  6. Test restarts. Restart the service deliberately and verify that the bot reconnects, migrations complete and persistent data survives.
  7. Set billing and usage alerts. A free credit that silently turns into a paid overage is not a free deployment.

  • Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
  1. Put the bot in a private Git repository with a reproducible lockfile and a clear start command.
  2. Define the runtime version and install command. Test a clean local install so a failed build is not mistaken for a hosting problem.
  3. Create the service as a worker or background process, not a static site. If the provider offers separate web and worker types, choose the worker.
  4. Add DISCORD_TOKEN and every API credential as secret environment variables. Remove tokens from sample configuration and commit history.
  5. Deploy and inspect build logs, startup logs and memory use. A successful build does not prove that the Gateway connection was established.
  6. Invite the bot with only the permissions it needs, then test a command, a reconnect and a controlled restart.
  7. Enable usage notifications and document how to pause or delete the service so a forgotten experiment cannot create an unexpected bill.

Do not keep an HTTP endpoint alive with artificial traffic when the provider’s policy says free services sleep. That approach can consume quotas, violate terms or still fail when the platform enforces suspension at the scheduler level.

Diagnosing a bot that keeps going offline

Symptom Likely cause What to check
It disappears after a quiet period. Idle sleep on a free web service. Read the sleep rule and move the worker to an explicitly always-on plan.
It runs for part of the month, then stops. Credits or instance-hours exhausted. Inspect usage, identify build or database charges, and set a monthly budget.
It restarts repeatedly. Out-of-memory termination, crash loop or an invalid secret. Read the last process log, compare peak memory with the limit, and validate environment variables.
Commands work locally but not after deployment. Missing privileged intents, wrong runtime version or an unbound start command. Check the bot’s Discord intents, dependency lockfile and the host’s process command.
Data vanishes after redeploy. Ephemeral storage. Move state to durable storage or implement backups and restore tests.
The account cannot create the advertised free resource. Offer withdrawn, region restriction or eligibility change. Read the current pricing and account terms; do not build a production dependency on an old plan.

When a VPS is the right call

A VPS is appropriate when the bot must run continuously, needs persistent storage or requires packages that a managed platform does not expose. You receive root or administrative control, a stable filesystem and freedom to run a process supervisor, but you also become responsible for updates, firewall rules, SSH security, backups and incident recovery.

Oracle’s reported Always Free ARM VM can be a zero-monthly-cost VPS-style option if its current terms and availability work for your account. A paid VPS costs money but is generally easier to budget and less exposed to free-tier reclamation. A vendor blog has argued that once a bot needs 24/7 uptime, persistent storage or more than about 250 MB of RAM, the time spent fighting free-tier limits can exceed roughly $1 per month of inexpensive paid hosting. That is a vendor opinion, not an independent cost study, but it captures the practical trade-off.

Basic VPS deployment sequence

  1. Create a non-root administrator and log in with an SSH key; disable password SSH login after confirming key access.
  2. Patch the operating system and enable a firewall. Allow SSH only from trusted addresses where practical; a Discord Gateway bot usually needs outbound access, not an inbound public port.
  3. Install the required runtime, such as the supported Node.js or Python version, from a maintained distribution source.
  4. Copy the application, install locked dependencies and create an environment file readable only by the bot user.
  5. Run the bot under a supervisor such as systemd or another process manager so it starts on boot and restarts after a crash.
  6. Send logs to rotation, monitor memory and disk usage, and schedule encrypted backups for any database or configuration.
  7. Test a reboot, a lost network connection and restoration from backup before inviting the bot into more servers.

These controls are the price of VPS freedom. If you do not want to maintain them, a paid managed worker is usually safer than an unmanaged server, even when the monthly VPS price is lower.

Free tier, managed paid plan or VPS?

Choose Use it when Accept these trade-offs
Free tier You are learning, testing commands or running a small private bot whose downtime is acceptable. Sleep, credit exhaustion, low limits and policy churn.
Managed paid PaaS You want Git deploys, logs and secrets management without Linux administration. A recurring bill and provider-specific limits; pricing may vary by memory, CPU and bandwidth.
Cheap paid bot host You value a simple control panel and predictable bot-oriented pricing. Less control over the operating system, storage and debugging tools.
VPS You need full control, persistent services, custom packages or several bots on one machine. You administer security, updates, backups, monitoring and recovery.

Use five decision axes: guaranteed uptime, total monthly cost, administration burden, resource headroom and the likelihood that the free allowance will remain available. Reassess when the bot becomes public, gains more guilds, adds a database or receives commands at all hours.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Migration checklist for a growing bot

  1. Measure peak memory, restart frequency, command latency and storage growth for at least several busy days.
  2. Export configuration and database data; verify that the token can be rotated without downtime longer than your maintenance window.
  3. Choose a destination that supports the bot’s process type and architecture, especially if moving between x86 and ARM.
  4. Deploy the new instance privately, test commands and permissions, and confirm that scheduled jobs will not run twice.
  5. Switch the bot workload, monitor Gateway reconnects and API errors, then keep the old deployment available until the new one is stable.
  6. Delete unused services and revoke old credentials so an abandoned free project cannot incur charges or retain access.

Discord policy and account risk

No verified official developer-policy page covering third-party hosting was available for the specific claims considered here. A community request for Discord-hosted bots is a feature suggestion, not a policy statement. Follow Discord’s current developer terms, rate limits, privileged-intent requirements and automation rules directly, and do not assume that a host’s free plan changes what Discord permits.

Verdict

For a private or educational bot, start on a free plan whose sleep and credit rules you understand. For a public bot that must stay online, budget for an always-on paid worker; the reported entry points include Railway Hobby at $5 per month, a Fly.io shared Machine at about $2.28 per month, or Render Starter at $7 per month, subject to current pricing and usage. Choose a VPS when those managed plans lack the control or persistent resources you need and you are prepared to operate Linux. Recheck every allowance before deployment because free hosting policies change faster than a bot’s code.
