For two people, the lowest-cost official option is a Bedrock Realm at $3.99 USD per month. That subscription covers the owner and up to two other simultaneous players, so two friends can play together with room for one more. The Java Realms plan costs $7.99 USD per month and allows the owner plus up to 10 other simultaneous players. These are recurring prices checked on October 15, 2026, and Minecraft can change them; confirm the amount shown at checkout.

The short answer: $3.99 for Bedrock or $7.99 for Java
Minecraft does not sell a special two-person server tier. Instead, you choose a Realm based on the edition you play. Bedrock Realms has the lower monthly price, while Java Realms costs more but supports a much larger group.

| Option | Monthly price | Simultaneous players | Supported edition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bedrock Realms | $3.99 USD, recurring | Owner plus two other players | Bedrock Edition |
| Java Realms | $7.99 USD, recurring | Owner plus 10 other players | Java Edition |
| Bedrock Realms Plus | $7.99 USD, recurring | Owner plus 10 other players | Bedrock Edition |
For exactly two people, Bedrock Realms is therefore the cheapest straightforward choice when both players use Bedrock. Java players must pay for the $7.99 plan even if only two people ever join, because there is no smaller Java tier in the listed plans. Bedrock Realms Plus costs the same as Java Realms but adds access to a rotating Marketplace Pass catalog; the standard Bedrock plan does not include that Plus catalog.
What the monthly Realm subscription provides
Realms is Minecraft’s always-online personal server service. The owner creates or selects a world, and invited friends can join while the Realm is available rather than waiting for the owner’s computer to be running. Minecraft describes the benefit this way: “Your Realm is always online, so your friends can play anytime.”
#1 Best Overall
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
Always-online access
A Realm is hosted by Minecraft rather than by one player’s console or computer. This removes the common problem in which a friend’s world disappears when its host logs off. For two players with different schedules, that convenience can matter more than the raw monthly price.
Backups and world slots
The subscription includes free backups and three world slots. You can keep multiple worlds available and switch which one is active without paying for a separate backup service. Backups are especially useful before experimenting with add-ons, major builds or other changes that could damage a world.
Friend access managed by the owner
The subscriber controls invitations and decides who can enter. Invited friends do not need to buy their own Realms subscription. Only the owner needs the Realm plan; the other player still needs the matching Minecraft edition and any platform access required to play online.
Trial and renewal terms
Minecraft advertises a 30-day trial for eligible users. Eligibility can depend on the account or platform, so a trial should not be assumed for every player. The subscription auto-renews unless you cancel it. If you use a trial or a paid month for a short project, check the renewal setting and cancellation instructions before the next billing date.
Edition compatibility determines the price you can use
Price comparison comes after edition compatibility. A Bedrock player must join a Bedrock-hosted game, and a Java player must join a Java-hosted game. Java and Bedrock cannot share one Realm.

Bedrock: the $3.99 option
Bedrock Realms works with supported Bedrock devices and consoles. The $3.99 plan permits the owner plus two other simultaneous players. If your group consists of two people total, one person subscribes and invites the other. If you later add a third friend, the listed limit still covers that group; a fourth non-owner player would exceed the plan’s simultaneous-player allowance.
Java: the $7.99 option
Java Realms supports Java players on Windows, macOS and Linux. The $7.99 plan allows the owner plus 10 other simultaneous players. That capacity is far beyond a two-person group, but it is the available Java Realm tier described here. Both players must own and run Java Edition; owning Bedrock does not let a player enter a Java Realm.
Why cross-edition play fails
Buying the cheaper Bedrock plan will not create a bridge for a Java player. Likewise, a Java Realm cannot host a Bedrock client. Before subscribing, check the edition shown in each player’s launcher or console version and choose a plan that matches both accounts.
What each player must pay for
The Realm subscription is only one part of the budget. The owner pays the recurring hosting charge, but both people need the game and compatible online access.
- Realm hosting: $3.99 per month for Bedrock Realms or $7.99 per month for Java Realms at the listed prices.
- Minecraft ownership: Each player needs the matching edition. Buying the game is separate from buying a Realm subscription.
- Console online service: Console multiplayer may require a platform-specific online subscription sold separately. The exact requirement and price depend on the console platform and its current policy.
- Marketplace content: Standard Bedrock Realms does not include the Realms Plus Marketplace Pass catalog. Realms Plus includes access to a rotating catalog while retaining the 10-other-player limit.
- Add-ons: Any add-ons or other optional content you choose can create costs beyond the Realm plan. The subscription itself does not turn every piece of Marketplace content into a free item.
Because the invited friend does not need a second Realm subscription, two players should not budget two hosting charges. The usual arrangement is one subscriber, two game licenses, and any required console online memberships.

How much does that become over a year?
Multiplying the listed monthly rates by 12 gives a simple comparison before any price change: Bedrock Realms is $47.88 for 12 months, and Java Realms is $95.88 for 12 months. Those figures are not prepaid quotes; they are arithmetic based on the recurring rates checked on October 15, 2026. A subscription can change price, and your actual billing schedule may not align with a calendar year.
| Plan | 12 months at listed rate | What the calculation excludes |
|---|---|---|
| Bedrock Realms | $47.88 | The Minecraft game purchase, console online fees and optional content |
| Java Realms | $95.88 | The Minecraft game purchase and optional content |
| Bedrock Realms Plus | $95.88 | The Minecraft game purchase and any platform-specific online fee |
Use the annual figures to compare the scale of the commitment, not as a guarantee of future pricing. If you cancel, the Realm’s renewal stops according to the account or platform’s cancellation process; review the service’s current terms when you subscribe.
Realms versus renting or self-hosting
Realms is easy to price because the official plans publish a recurring rate. A third-party rented server or a self-hosted computer can be cheaper or more expensive, but there is no single honest monthly number without choosing a provider and defining the hardware and service you need.
Rented third-party hosting
A rented Minecraft server normally charges according to resources and service features selected by the customer. Relevant variables include allocated memory, processor performance, storage, player capacity, backup policy, data-center location, support, mod or plug-in support and uptime target. Promotional introductory rates may not match renewal rates. Without a specific provider and plan, assigning a price would be misleading.

Self-hosting can avoid a separate hosting invoice if you already own a suitable computer and reliable internet connection. It is not free in the broader sense: the computer must remain available, electricity is consumed, uploads can be limited, and someone must install updates, configure the server, protect the network and maintain backups. If the host shuts down or loses connectivity, the other player cannot join.

Virtual private servers and home hardware
A virtual private server introduces a recurring infrastructure bill and requires administration. A home server requires hardware, storage, electricity and network configuration. The right comparison depends on your uptime expectation, technical ability and willingness to troubleshoot rather than on a universal advertised price.
| Factor | Realms | Rented or self-hosted server |
|---|---|---|
| Price certainty | Published recurring plan price | Provider, hardware and usage dependent |
| Administration | Minimal; the owner manages invitations and worlds | You may manage software, updates, backups and security |
| Availability | Designed to stay online | Depends on provider uptime or your equipment and connection |
| Backups | Free backups included | Depends on the host or your own backup process |
| Technical control | More limited, service-managed environment | Usually greater control over settings, mods or plug-ins, depending on the setup |
For two people who value predictable billing and low maintenance, Realms is the simpler choice. A technically experienced player who needs extensive server control may prefer another arrangement, but should calculate the complete provider, hardware, electricity and maintenance costs first.
Which option is cheapest for two people?
Choose Bedrock Realms when both players use Bedrock
At $3.99 per month, this is the lowest listed official hosting price. It includes the owner plus two other simultaneous players, backups and three world slots. It is the practical budget choice when both players are on supported Bedrock devices and do not need the Plus Marketplace catalog.
Choose Java Realms when both players use Java
The $7.99 monthly plan is the relevant official option for Java players. You pay for capacity beyond your two-person group, but the plan also accommodates future friends without changing tiers. It includes the always-online Realm model and its associated world-management features.
Choose Bedrock Realms Plus for the catalog
Realms Plus costs $7.99 per month, the same listed monthly price as Java Realms, but it is a Bedrock plan. Its distinguishing feature is access to a rotating Marketplace Pass catalog. If you only need a persistent two-person world, the $3.99 standard Bedrock plan avoids paying for a catalog you will not use.

Consider self-hosting only after pricing the hidden work
A free computer or unused machine can make self-hosting attractive, but the decision should include electricity, internet reliability, maintenance time, backups and security. If either player wants to join at arbitrary times, an always-on setup may require the machine to run continuously.

Setup checklist for a two-player Realm
- Identify the edition. Confirm whether both accounts use Bedrock or both use Java. Do not subscribe until the editions match.
- Check device requirements. For Bedrock, verify that both devices are supported Bedrock platforms. For Java, verify that both players use Java on Windows, macOS or Linux.
- Select the plan. Choose Bedrock Realms at $3.99, Java Realms at $7.99, or Bedrock Realms Plus at $7.99 if the Marketplace Pass catalog matters.
- Review the billing screen. Confirm the currency, recurring renewal date and whether a 30-day trial is available to the subscribing account.
- Create or select a world. Use one of the three included world slots and retain a backup before making major changes.
- Invite the other player. The owner manages the invitation. The friend does not need a separate Realm subscription, but still needs the matching game edition and any required console online service.
- Test joining. Have the invited player connect while the owner is available, then verify that the Realm appears under the correct edition and account.
- Manage renewal. If you only need the Realm temporarily, cancel before auto-renewal under the account or platform that processed the subscription.
Common mistakes and fixes
Subscribing to the wrong edition
Symptom: One player cannot see or join the Realm. Fix: Verify both players are using Java or both are using Bedrock. Changing devices does not make the two editions interoperable.
Assuming both players need Realms
Symptom: The budget includes two hosting subscriptions. Fix: Only the Realm owner pays for the subscription; invited friends join without their own Realm plan.
Forgetting the separate game purchase
Symptom: A friend has an invitation but cannot play. Fix: Confirm that the friend owns the matching Minecraft edition. Realm access does not replace ownership of the game.
Ignoring console online requirements
Symptom: The Realm exists, but console multiplayer is blocked. Fix: Check the console platform’s current online-multiplayer subscription requirement and add that separate cost to the budget.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Expecting standard Bedrock Realms to include the Plus catalog
Symptom: Marketplace Pass content is unavailable. Fix: The rotating catalog belongs to Bedrock Realms Plus; standard Bedrock Realms has the lower $3.99 price and does not include that catalog.
Leaving a trial or short-term plan on auto-renew
Symptom: A new month is charged after the group stops playing. Fix: Check the renewal setting immediately after subscribing and cancel according to the account or platform’s instructions if you do not want another billing period.
Bottom line for a two-player budget
Budget $3.99 per month for Bedrock Realms when both players use Bedrock, or $7.99 per month for Java Realms when both use Java. One person pays for the Realm, invited friends do not need their own Realm subscription, and each player still needs the matching Minecraft edition. Add any separate console online fee and optional Marketplace content, then verify the current price at checkout because these recurring rates can change.
