Garena rolled it out across regions between March 20 and March 24, 2023. If you are looking for an old APK + OBB package today, treat download pages as third-party archives—not as verified official Garena releases. The supported option is to install the current edition through Garena’s official download links and Google Play.
Garena’s official OB39 material confirms the update and its major gameplay changes, but it does not verify the third-party package labels Free Fire 1.98.1 and Free Fire MAX 2.98.1 as authoritative identifiers. An archived build may install and still fail to connect to current servers.

What was the March 2023 Free Fire update?
March 2023 refers to Free Fire OB39, a major update that redesigned important parts of the character and pet systems. Garena’s regional publications show different dates—including March 20, 21, 22 and 24—because updates and patch notes were localized and rolled out regionally. These dates do not necessarily represent separate global versions.

What changed in Free Fire OB39?
- Characters could be unlocked with Gold. This changed how players obtained characters instead of relying only on premium currency.
- Character and pet skills were made available at maximum skill power. The former skill-level progression no longer affected skill attributes in the same way.
- Character presets made it faster to switch between character and skill combinations.
- Character Bond progression changed. Progression was tied to using a character in battles, while existing progression was inherited from the player’s original character levels.
- Gameplay and interface adjustments included improved grenade-direction indicators, weapon balancing, ranked-protection-card changes, Craftland adjustments and other system updates.
- Anti-cheat warnings were reinforced. Garena warned players against modified game files and unauthorized third-party programs. Its support material treats modified clients and unauthorized software as prohibited conduct.
Garena also warned in a regional update notice that different client versions could not play together after the rollout and that some features would stop working on the old version. The precise behavior depended on the region and rollout state.
Free Fire and Free Fire MAX are not interchangeable
Free Fire and Free Fire MAX are related but separate Android editions. Free Fire is intended to support a broader range of devices, while Free Fire MAX is the higher-fidelity edition and generally requires more storage and device resources. Garena presents both editions through its official site.
Do not combine their files. A Free Fire APK must use its matching resources, and a Free Fire MAX APK must use its own. Placing an OBB from one edition into the other can produce an “OBB not found” error, crashes or an integrity failure.
What APK + OBB means
An APK is an Android application package containing the executable app and core resources. An OBB is an older Android expansion-data format used by some games for large supplementary assets.
An APK and OBB must match on several points:
- edition and package identifier;
- release and build;
- app signature;
- CPU architecture;
- resource data and expected directory;
- server compatibility.
Matching filenames are not proof of authenticity. Combining an APK from one release with an OBB from another can prevent installation, cause a loading-screen loop, crash the game or trigger an integrity warning.

Other formats also exist. A normal Play Store update is managed by Google Play. A standalone APK is one application package. APKM, APKS, XAPK and app bundles may contain split packages that require a compatible installer. A “MOD APK,” “unlimited diamonds” APK or “anti-ban” build is a modified client, not an official update.
Are Free Fire 1.98.1 and Free Fire MAX 2.98.1 official?
Some third-party download pages listed the March 2023 files as Free Fire 1.98.1 and Free Fire MAX 2.98.1. Those labels come from the third-party Android Sage article.

The page also contains contradictory patch labeling and directs readers toward third-party distribution routes. Therefore, do not describe those files as official Garena downloads or assume that a mirror still hosts an untouched package.
Where to download Free Fire or Free Fire MAX now
For a current installation, use this route:
- Open Garena’s official Free Fire website.
- Choose Free Fire or Free Fire MAX.
- Follow the official Android store link available for your region.
- Install or update through Google Play.
- Allow the game to download its normal in-app resources.
- Sign in with the account previously linked to the game.
The official Free Fire MAX Google Play listing identifies Garena as the developer and provides the supported Android distribution route. If the listing is unavailable in your region, check Garena’s regional website or official support rather than choosing a random mirror.
Historical APK + OBB installation method
The following describes how APK + OBB installation generally worked around 2023. It is not a guarantee that an archived OB39 package will work on a current Android device or connect to Garena’s servers.

- Confirm that your account is linked. Do not remove a guest installation until you understand the risk of losing its local progress.
- Obtain a matching APK and expansion archive only if their provenance, signature and integrity can be verified.
- Scan the files and compare published hashes where a trustworthy publisher has supplied them.
- Temporarily allow installation from the relevant Android source if the device requires it.
- Install the APK.
- Extract the OBB without renaming it.
- Place it in the Android OBB directory matching the package identifier, traditionally under
Android/obb/<package-name>/. - Launch the game and allow any normal resource setup.
- Disable the temporary installation permission afterward.
- If the game requests an update or reports an integrity error, remove the archive and return to the official store build.
Do not assume that a path or filename from an old download guide applies to OB39 or to Free Fire MAX. Android storage restrictions also vary by Android version, and some devices prevent ordinary file managers from writing to protected directories.

Common APK and OBB problems
“App not installed”
Common causes include a different signing certificate, an incompatible CPU architecture, a conflicting installed package, unmet Android requirements or a damaged APK.
Confirm that the account is linked before uninstalling anything. The safer recovery is to reinstall through Google Play. Do not overwrite a legitimate installation with a differently signed package, and avoid APKs requesting unrelated permissions.
“OBB not found”
The archive may not have been extracted, may be nested inside an extra folder, may use the wrong package-directory name or may belong to a different release. Android’s scoped-storage restrictions can also block manual copying.
Delete the mismatched archive and install from the official store so the game can obtain its own resources. Do not rename files unless the publisher specifically requires it.

Crashes or returns to the lobby
Possible causes include incompatible architecture, incomplete resources, device compatibility problems, a modified package or rejection of an obsolete client by the game servers. Try the official store version and clear only the app cache first. Avoid clearing app data unless your login details and account linkage are confirmed.
Login loop or outdated-client message
An old client may no longer be accepted, or the server may require a newer version before login or matchmaking. Different client versions may also disable features or prevent players from joining one another. The appropriate fix is to update through the official channel—not to keep trying unrelated mirrors.
Is an old March 2023 APK + OBB safe?
There is no responsible way to guarantee that a historical package found online is safe or playable today. A file may be repackaged, signed by someone other than Garena, modified to include malware or bundled with unwanted software. Even an untampered archive may fail because current servers require a newer client.
Modified clients carry an additional account risk. “Unlimited diamonds,” “anti-ban” and similar claims are not legitimate OB39 variants. Garena identifies unauthorized programs and modified clients as prohibited conduct, so do not use them on an account you want to protect.
Installation success is not the same as server access. For normal play, updates, account safety and compatibility, use Garena’s official store distribution. Treat any March 2023 APK + OBB as historical third-party material unless Garena directly hosts or authenticates it.
