Garena announced a India-specific edition of Free Fire in August 2023, with a planned September 5 release, then postponed it. The sources available here do not confirm that this edition later launched. The original game had become unavailable in India in February 2022, so the announcement came about 18 months later—not exactly one year after the ban.
What happened to Free Fire in India?
On February 14, 2022, publisher Sea said Free Fire was unavailable on Google Play and the iOS App Store in India and was not operable for some users there. Sea said it was working to address the situation and apologized for the inconvenience. Its statement confirms the service and store disruption, but does not spell out the government’s full legal rationale. Sea’s statement.

Garena later announced a distinct, India-focused edition called Free Fire India. It set September 5, 2023 as the planned release date, but postponed the launch in September. Garena said it needed more time to refine gameplay and localize the experience. No exact replacement date was given in the postponement report. The Indian Express reported the postponement.
Did Free Fire India launch?
The available sources do not verify that the announced India-specific edition subsequently launched, or that Garena later set a new official date. Garena’s official site has an India-region view and describes Free Fire and Free Fire MAX as free-to-play mobile games, but that is not confirmation that the planned Free Fire India edition went live. TechCrunch attributed a figure of around 40 million monthly active users in India before the ban to Sensor Tower and HSBC. It is a historical estimate reported in 2023, not a current audience count or a figure presented as audited by Garena.
