If Gears 5 crashes or will not launch on PC, start by checking that your computer meets the game’s requirements, then try Steam’s reversible Windows launch checks if you own the Steam version. The listing’s game requirements include Windows 7, but its client note says the Steam client supports Windows 10 and later as of January 1, 2024. That distinction means the game’s legacy requirement text does not establish that the current Steam client will run on Windows 7. A PC below a minimum specification may have compatibility or launch trouble; meeting the minimum does not guarantee that the game will never crash.
Try Steam’s general Windows launch checks
If you have the Steam version, Steam Support recommends a short sequence of general checks for Windows games that will not launch. Follow the current Steam launch troubleshooting guidance and change one thing at a time so you can tell whether anything helped.

- Update Windows. Install available Windows updates, then restart the PC.
- Update your graphics and other relevant drivers. Use the appropriate official update route for your hardware rather than an unverified driver-download site.
- Verify the game files in Steam. In your Steam Library, right-click Gears 5, open Properties, choose Installed Files, then select Verify integrity of game files. Let the check finish before launching again.
- Close non-essential software. Exit background applications that are not needed to run Windows or the game, then test again. If the game starts, reopen applications one at a time to identify a possible conflict.
- Recheck the requirements. Compare your operating system, processor, graphics card, RAM, and available storage against the listing above.
These are broad Steam Support recommendations, not steps proven to solve every Gears 5 crash. Steam notes that launch failures can arise across many different PC configurations.

The Xbox support pages do not provide checkable article-level advice here, so no particular Xbox or Microsoft Store crash fix can be confirmed from them. Avoid registry edits, replacing DLL files, third-party repair utilities, or hardware purchases unless reliable case-specific evidence points to them. A component upgrade is worth considering only if you confirm that a specific part falls below a published requirement.
