What’s actually slowing this PC down?

There is no universally free, public server that Minecraft Education clients can use. For a normal lesson, the practical no-extra-server-cost option is peer-to-peer hosting inside Minecraft Education: a licensed teacher opens the world, selects Friends > Start Hosting, and students join with a four-picture code. The school still normally needs an eligible Microsoft 365 Education plan with administrator-assigned Minecraft Education licenses. A trial or free download is useful for evaluation, but it is not the same as unrestricted school licensing.
What “free Minecraft Education server” actually means
Teachers usually mean one of three different things when they ask for a free Minecraft Education server:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- A way to run a single class world without paying for a separate hosting company.
- A persistent world that students can revisit between lessons.
- A Java or Bedrock server that Minecraft Education students can join.
Only the first option is straightforward for most classes. Minecraft Education includes peer-to-peer multiplayer, so the teacher’s device can host a lesson without a separately purchased server. The host must remain in the world, however, and the session ends for everyone when that host leaves.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA persistent option also exists: Minecraft Education Dedicated Servers. They are designed for saved worlds that remain available across sessions, but they require organizational setup, an enabled Global Administrator feature, and a For Faculty license for the Teacher View portal. This is an IT-managed deployment rather than a one-click free server.

The third option is not compatible. Mojang’s downloadable server software is for Minecraft: Java Edition only, while the Minecraft Education FAQ states that Education cannot play multiplayer with either Java or Bedrock Edition. Installing a free Java server will not make it usable by Minecraft Education clients.
Is Minecraft Education free for a school class?
School licensing
A school normally needs an eligible Microsoft 365 Education plan that includes Minecraft Education. An administrator must assign the appropriate licenses to teachers and students before they can use the school deployment. Whether your institution qualifies depends on its Microsoft 365 agreement and administrative configuration, not simply on downloading the application.
Ask the school’s IT administrator to verify three things:
- The organization’s Microsoft 365 Education plan includes Minecraft Education.
- Your teacher account has been assigned a Minecraft Education license.
- Every participating student account has the required assignment.
Trial and download access
Minecraft Education provides a free trial or download route for evaluation. That can let a teacher test the application or demonstrate it before a school deployment is completed. A trial should not be presented to a class as an unrestricted replacement for school licensing; trial eligibility, duration, and account permissions are separate from the school’s licensed access.
What is and is not an extra server cost
Peer-to-peer hosting does not require a separate commercial server in the workflow described by Minecraft Education Support. The teacher’s device is the host, so the practical constraints are its hardware, network connection, and ability to remain in the world. No universal price for a school plan or a Dedicated Server deployment is stated in the available official information, so your administrator must confirm any institutional cost.

Choose the right hosting model
| Characteristic | Peer-to-peer hosting | Minecraft Education Dedicated Server |
|---|---|---|
| Best use | A lesson, workshop, or short activity run by a teacher | A persistent class, club, or project world used across multiple sessions |
| World persistence | The host must be present; the multiplayer session ends when the host leaves | Persistent worlds retain saved game state across sessions |
| Setup effort | Open a world, choose Friends, select Start Hosting, and share the join code | IT must enable the required feature, deploy the server, and configure permissions |
| License requirement | Eligible school licensing and assigned user licenses | Eligible licensing plus Global Administrator enablement and a For Faculty license for Teacher View |
| Host availability | Teacher’s hosting device and player must stay in the world | Designed to remain available between lessons once deployed |
| Scale | Up to 40 players according to official guidance, subject to host hardware | Capacity depends on the deployment and its infrastructure; Minecraft Education’s official guidance does not state a universal player limit |
For a one-period lesson, peer-to-peer is normally the fastest route. Ask IT about a Dedicated Server when students need to return to the same saved world without waiting for a teacher to host it.
Prepare a free peer-to-peer class session
1. Confirm accounts and licenses
Before installing anything, have the administrator confirm the plan and assignments described above. Students should sign in with their school Microsoft accounts. Multiplayer generally requires participants to belong to the same Microsoft 365 organization; a personal account or an account from another institution may not be able to join the class world.
2. Install or update the application
Install Minecraft Education on supported school devices and update every device to the same application version. The getting-started guidance lists Windows, Mac, iPhone and iPad, Chromebook, and Android as supported device categories. A mixed-version class is a common cause of failed joins, so check the version shown on each device before the lesson begins.
3. Check the network path
Peer-to-peer play depends on the school network allowing the necessary communication between participants. Ask IT to check network controls before class, especially if student devices are separated by wireless networks or filtering policies. Students joining from home also depend on their home network and the school account configuration; the same-organization and same-version requirements still apply, and a home connection may block peer-to-peer traffic even when the school network works.
4. Open the world and start hosting
- Launch Minecraft Education and open the world you want to use.
- Pause the game.
- Select Friends.
- Choose Start Hosting and confirm.
The world is now available for players who meet the account, version, and network requirements. You do not need to download the Java server software for this process.

5. Share the picture-based join code privately
Minecraft Education displays a four-picture join code. Give the code to the class through a private classroom channel or by displaying it only to the intended students. Each student selects Play > Join World, then enters the four images in the same order. Treat the code as classroom access information rather than posting it publicly.

6. Keep the host in the world
The teacher or other hosting player must remain in the world throughout the activity. Minecraft Education Support states: “When using Minecraft Education, the host must be playing the game in order for others to join. If the hosting player leaves the world, all other players will be removed from the world.” Closing the world, leaving the session, or otherwise taking the host out of the game therefore ends the peer-to-peer session for everyone.
7. End and repeat the session deliberately
When the lesson is over, plan for the multiplayer session to end with the host. If students need reliable access on another day without the teacher present, peer-to-peer is the wrong model; ask IT about a Dedicated Server instead of treating a temporary hosted session as a persistent service.
Player limits and performance
Official maximum versus practical class size
The official multiplayer guidance gives a maximum of 40 players for a peer-to-peer session, but that is not a promise that every laptop can host 40 students smoothly. The host device performs the server-like work, so processor performance, memory, graphics capability, and network conditions all matter.
Minecraft Education Support notes that many consumer-grade devices support about 8–10 players, while larger groups need a stronger host. The same guidance says that 10 or more users require a high-spec host for stability and suggests groups of three or four on minimum-spec devices. These figures are practical guidance, not a guaranteed benchmark for every model or network.

Bandwidth
The troubleshooting guidance lists 1.5 Mbps as the minimum recommended host bandwidth. That figure applies to the host connection; congestion, wireless interference, and other school traffic can still reduce stability. If the world becomes slow or players disconnect, reducing the number of participants is often more effective than repeatedly sharing the join code.
How to respond to lag
- Move hosting to a stronger available device.
- Reduce the number of players in that world.
- Use groups of three or four when devices are at minimum specification.
- Ask IT to check the host’s network path and available bandwidth.
- Keep all clients on the same Minecraft Education version.
When a Dedicated Server is worth the setup
Persistent world use cases
Choose a Dedicated Server when the world must remain available between lessons, when a club meets without the original teacher hosting, or when a long project needs a saved game state that students can revisit. The Dedicated Server FAQ describes persistent worlds whose saved state carries across sessions, which solves the fundamental limitation of peer-to-peer hosting.
Administrative requirements
Dedicated Server access is not simply a free download. The Teacher View workflow requires the Global Administrator feature to be enabled and a For Faculty license. IT administrators control enablement, deployment, and permissions. A teacher who cannot see the required Teacher View controls should ask the organization’s administrator to verify those prerequisites rather than trying to substitute Java or Bedrock server software.
What the school’s IT administrator handles
- Confirming that the organization has eligible Minecraft Education licensing.
- Enabling the Global Administrator feature.
- Confirming the For Faculty entitlement for the teacher workflow.
- Deploying and configuring the Dedicated Server.
- Managing permissions and deciding which staff or students can access the world.
Minecraft Education’s official guidance does not establish one universal hardware specification, player limit, or price for every Dedicated Server deployment. Those details depend on the school’s configuration and should be documented by IT before students rely on the world being available.

They may be able to join a peer-to-peer world from home, but it is not guaranteed. Players generally need to be signed in through the same Microsoft 365 organization and running the same Minecraft Education version. The host’s school network must permit peer-to-peer communication, and each home network must allow the connection to reach the host. A school firewall, home router, filtering product, or version mismatch can prevent the join even when the classroom test worked.
Best Value
- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
For recurring remote access, a Dedicated Server is usually a better fit because the world is intended to remain available between sessions. It still requires the licensing and IT administration described above; moving students off campus does not turn a trial account or a Java server into a supported Education multiplayer solution.
Why Java and Bedrock servers do not work
The Java download is a different product
Mojang’s official server download page identifies that software as compatible only with Minecraft: Java Edition. It is not the server component for Minecraft Education, even though the games share the Minecraft name and basic building concepts.
Education multiplayer compatibility
The Minecraft Education FAQ separately states that Minecraft Education cannot play multiplayer with Java or Bedrock editions. Education clients therefore cannot join a regular Java server, and a Bedrock server is not a supported bridge either. Do not spend class time changing ports, installing Java server files, or looking for a cross-edition workaround; the edition compatibility boundary is the reason those attempts fail.

Troubleshoot the most common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Students cannot find or join the world | Different Microsoft 365 organizations, mismatched versions, or blocked peer-to-peer traffic | Verify every account belongs to the school organization, update all clients to the same version, and ask IT to check network controls |
| The join code is entered correctly but access fails | The code is being used outside the intended organization or the network path is unavailable | Test with a school account on the school network, then investigate home or campus firewall restrictions |
| Everyone is removed when the teacher exits | Expected peer-to-peer behavior | Keep the host in the world, or move the activity to a properly deployed Dedicated Server |
| The world becomes laggy with a full class | The host device or connection cannot support the group size | Reduce players, use a stronger host, follow the three-to-four-player guidance on minimum-spec devices, and check the 1.5 Mbps host recommendation |
| Start Hosting or Teacher View controls are missing | Licensing or administrator enablement is incomplete | Ask IT to confirm the Minecraft Education assignment; for Dedicated Server workflows, verify Global Administrator enablement and the For Faculty license |
| A Java or Bedrock server accepts other players but not Education clients | Edition incompatibility | Use Minecraft Education peer-to-peer hosting or an Education Dedicated Server instead |
A practical decision checklist
- One lesson, teacher present: use peer-to-peer hosting.
- Students return to the same world between lessons: ask IT about a Dedicated Server.
- No school license yet: use the official trial or download route only for evaluation while the administrator confirms eligibility.
- More than about 8–10 players on an ordinary device: expect performance limits and arrange a stronger host or smaller groups.
- Students use Java or Bedrock: they cannot join a Minecraft Education multiplayer world through those editions.
- Students join from home: verify same-organization accounts, identical app versions, and network support before promising remote access.
What to tell your IT administrator
Send a concise request that identifies the planned class size, device types, lesson date, and whether the world must persist between sessions. Ask the administrator to confirm the Microsoft 365 Education plan, assign teacher and student licenses, approve the supported Minecraft Education devices, and check peer-to-peer communication on the school network. If persistence is required, specifically request an evaluation of Minecraft Education Dedicated Servers, including Global Administrator enablement, the For Faculty license, deployment ownership, and permission management.
This division of responsibility keeps a free classroom session simple: the teacher hosts the lesson world, students join through Minecraft Education, and IT resolves licensing, network, and persistent-server requirements that a teacher cannot fix inside the game.
