Cheapest Project Zomboid Server Hosting That Is Still Good (2026 Guide)

A practical 2026 guide to inexpensive Project Zomboid hosting: when hourly billing beats monthly plans, how much RAM mods need, and the checks that prevent save or build problems.

The lowest advertised price is not automatically the best value for a Project Zomboid server. For occasional sessions, TickServ’s hourly Eco tiers can be unusually inexpensive because billing is based on started hours and the server can shut down when nobody is playing. For a world that should remain available every day, a monthly plan such as BESTNET-GSERVER is easier to budget. Your player count, mod load, game build, region and save requirements determine whether a cheap plan is actually usable.

The prices and features below are provider claims dated 2026. No independent uptime, latency or performance test establishes one host as universally best, so use the comparison as a buying checklist rather than a ranking.

Listed first: Godlike.Host

If you want a game-focused host rather than a general one, the host listed first here is Godlike.Host for Project Zomboid. It offers ten data-center locations, free DDoS protection, up to three free backups a day with restore, SFTP access and a built-in mod installer and updater. Its Pterodactyl-based panel includes a task scheduler and sub-users with permissions, and you can upgrade or downgrade from the panel with prorated billing if your RAM needs change. Support is available 24/7 by live chat or ticket, and the first purchase carries a voluntary money-back guarantee within 3 calendar days; see the current plans for exact figures.

What “cheap but still good” means for Project Zomboid

A server is only a bargain if it has enough memory and CPU capacity for your group, supports the Build version your save uses, keeps the world safe between sessions and places the machine close enough to players for acceptable latency. A low monthly number with too little RAM, an incompatible build or poor save handling can cost more time than it saves money.

Start with four questions:

  • How many people will play at the same time?
  • Will you run a few quality-of-life mods or a large, demanding collection?
  • Do you need the world online continuously, or only while your group is playing?
  • Are you starting a new world, or must an existing Build 41 or Build 42 save be preserved?

Answer those before comparing currencies or headline rates. TickServ’s own memory figures are ballpark guidance surveyed in September 2026, not an independent performance guarantee. BESTNET’s player limits are maximums for its plans, not promises of comfortable play under every mod load.

TickServ: the lowest advertised hourly entry price

TickServ describes a dedicated Project Zomboid service billed by each started hour, with no subscription. Its pricing page, accessed October 13, 2026, lists several Eco shared-vCPU tiers. The page headline says “from €0.03/h,” but the detailed table includes 4 GB Eco entries at €0.02 per hour. Check the exact configuration at checkout because the headline and table present different starting figures.

TickServ configuration Advertised price What the provider says
Eco, 4 GB €0.02/hour Shared-vCPU entry tiers; price includes VAT according to the page
Eco, listed 8 GB tiers €0.03/hour Hourly billing by started hour
Eco, 16 GB €0.06/hour Higher-memory shared-vCPU tier
Eco, 32 GB €0.10/hour Higher-memory shared-vCPU tier
Dedicated CPU, 8 GB From €0.10/hour Dedicated-CPU option
Dedicated CPU, 32 GB Up to €0.26/hour Highest figure listed in the cited table

TickServ says a server costs €0 while it is switched off and advertises automatic shutdown when nobody is playing. That model suits a group that starts a world for scheduled sessions and stops it afterward. Billing is by started hour, so a session that crosses an hourly boundary can consume another billed hour. There is no subscription according to the service description.

Features TickServ advertises

  • Build 42 support.
  • Steam Workshop mod support by entering Workshop IDs.
  • A built-in administrator console.
  • Saves archived before shutdown and restored for the next session.
  • Eco locations in Germany, France, Finland, the Netherlands and Romania.
  • Dedicated-CPU locations in Germany, France, the United Kingdom, North America East, Poland and Italy.

Location availability depends on capacity. Select the region nearest most players, not simply the cheapest-looking machine. TickServ’s automatic shutdown and save-archive behavior are provider claims; confirm retention details and recovery options in the current panel before relying on them for a long-running world.

BESTNET-GSERVER: predictable monthly billing

BESTNET LLC’s October 9, 2026 release lists monthly-only plans and says there is no setup fee, minimum term or cancellation fee. The amounts below are October 2026 US-dollar reference prices; the company warns that reference-currency totals can change with exchange rates. Verify the live checkout total, taxes, region and included resources.

Plan Reference monthly price (October 2026) Maximum players listed
Small US$6.57 4
Medium US$11.26 8
Large US$19.97 16

Those player numbers are plan caps, not a guarantee that a heavily modded 16-player world will run smoothly. Ask what CPU, storage, backup and network resources accompany each tier if the control panel does not make them explicit. BESTNET says ports are normally assigned automatically, which can simplify connection setup.

Build 41 and Build 42 compatibility

BESTNET says stable Build 42 is the default and Build 41 can be selected in the panel. Its release also states that a Build 42 world cannot be opened in Build 41. Returning to Build 41 requires starting a new world, selecting the matching version and ensuring every player runs that same version. Treat the build choice as a save-management decision, not a cosmetic setting: verify the version before uploading or creating a world.

BESTNET-GSERVER is not an official partner of The Indie Stone, according to the company release. That statement does not indicate a quality problem; it simply means you should not infer endorsement.

Hourly versus monthly: choose by actual usage

Hourly and monthly prices answer different usage patterns. For an hourly service, estimated monthly spend is the selected hourly rate multiplied by the number of started hours in the month, plus any separately charged options. For a monthly service, the charge generally stays the same whether the group plays one evening or every evening. Because TickServ quotes euros and BESTNET’s figures are reference US dollars, do not compare the numbers as if they were the same currency.

Hourly billing fits occasional groups

  • You play scheduled weekends or a few evenings each month.
  • Everyone is comfortable starting and stopping the server.
  • Automatic shutdown and save restoration meet your availability needs.
  • You can tolerate a server taking time to start before a session.

Monthly billing fits an always-available world

  • Players join at different times without coordinating a launch.
  • The server should remain online for persistent activities or asynchronous play.
  • You prefer one predictable invoice instead of tracking started hours.
  • The monthly plan’s memory, CPU and player limit match your actual group.

To make a fair comparison, write down expected online hours, the exact RAM tier, currency conversion, taxes and any stronger-CPU or backup charges. A tiny hourly rate can exceed a monthly plan for a world left running most of the month; a monthly plan can be wasteful for two short sessions. Neither provider’s published prices alone establish a universal break-even point.

How much RAM do you need?

TickServ’s September 2026 ballpark survey gives the following starting points. These are provider-published estimates, not a benchmark or a promise that a particular mod list will fit.

Group and mod load TickServ ballpark RAM
Up to 6 players, unmodded 8 GB
Up to 32 players, no mods 16 GB
Up to 32 players, a few mods 16 GB
Up to 6 players, heavy mods 16 GB
Up to 32 players, heavy mods 32 GB

For a typical two-to-six-player group with no mods, 8 GB is the published starting point. Move toward 16 GB when you add many mods, increase map activity or expect more than six concurrent players. Heavy mod packs and larger groups point toward 32 GB. Leave headroom for the operating system, Java processes and bursts of activity rather than selecting a plan that is full at idle.

Why player caps do not settle the question

A plan advertised for four, eight or 16 players may still struggle with a demanding Workshop collection, large numbers of vehicles or scripted events. Conversely, a lightly used world may perform acceptably below a provider’s nominal cap. Monitor memory use, tick rate and player reports after launch, and keep a rollback plan if the provider lets you resize.

Build, Workshop and save checks before checkout

  1. Record your game build. Confirm whether the group is on Build 41 or Build 42. Everyone must use the same version as the server.
  2. Protect an existing world. Make a local copy before migration. A Build 42 world cannot be opened in Build 41 on BESTNET; changing back requires a new Build 41 world.
  3. List your mods. Note every Workshop ID, load order requirement and dependency. Check that the host supports the way your collection is installed.
  4. Confirm server-side controls. Look for an administrator console, configuration access, scheduled restarts and log access.
  5. Ask about persistence. Verify where saves are stored, how often backups run, how long they are retained and how restoration works.
  6. Choose a nearby region. Select a location that minimizes distance for most players, subject to available capacity.

TickServ advertises Workshop ID entry, an admin console and save archiving around shutdown. BESTNET advertises automatic port assignment and selectable Build 41 or Build 42. Those details are useful starting points, but read the current panel documentation because features and availability can change.

A practical buying workflow

For a two-to-six-player, mostly unmodded group

  1. Start with an 8 GB target based on TickServ’s ballpark guidance.
  2. Estimate how many started hours you will actually play each month.
  3. Compare the exact TickServ hourly tier with a monthly quote after currency conversion and taxes.
  4. Choose a nearby location and test joining, saving and restarting before investing in a large mod list.

For a modded group

  1. Classify the collection as a few mods or heavy mods rather than relying on player count alone.
  2. Plan for 16 GB for a small group with heavy mods, and consider 32 GB for larger groups with heavy mods, using TickServ’s figures as an initial estimate.
  3. Confirm Workshop handling, dependencies, load order and update behavior.
  4. Keep independent backups of the world even if the host advertises archiving.

For a persistent community world

  1. Favor a monthly plan if players need access at any time.
  2. Check that the listed player cap leaves room for your expected peak, rather than treating the cap as a performance target.
  3. Ask about CPU allocation, backup retention, storage limits and support response before committing.
  4. Verify the build and migration policy before uploading an established save.

Self-hosting as the no-rental alternative

Self-hosting can be cheaper when you already own a suitable computer and have a reliable connection, but you become responsible for installation, updates, port forwarding, backups, security and uptime. ForgeWorld documents installation through Steam tools or SteamCMD and describes the configuration work required after installation.

TechRadar gives a rough secondary baseline of a quad-core 2.5 GHz processor, 8 GB of RAM and a 20 GB SSD for a server. These figures are editorial guidance, not developer-certified Project Zomboid server minimums. Mod-heavy or higher-player worlds may need substantially more capacity, and a home connection’s upload speed and latency can matter as much as hardware.

Self-hosting checklist

  • Install the dedicated server with Steam tools or SteamCMD.
  • Configure the server name, password, ports, world settings and administrator account.
  • Forward the required ports on your router and allow the server through the host firewall.
  • Set up automatic updates only after confirming that updates will not break your chosen build or mods.
  • Schedule local and off-machine backups of saves and configuration files.
  • Test a remote connection from outside your home network.

Renting shifts those operational tasks to a provider; self-hosting trades the recurring bill for your time, hardware and electricity.

Common failure modes and fixes

Players cannot connect after an update

Check that the server and every client run the same Build version and that Workshop items finished updating. If an existing Build 42 world was switched to Build 41, restore the correct version or create a new Build 41 world rather than trying to open the incompatible save.

The server runs out of memory

Disable recently added mods, reduce the concurrent player load and inspect logs. If the pattern continues, move from 8 GB to 16 GB or from 16 GB to 32 GB according to the group and mod guidance, leaving headroom rather than selecting the smallest plan.

A supposedly cheap server costs more than expected

Review started-hour billing, currency conversion, VAT or taxes and optional CPU, storage, backup or IP charges. For an hourly service, confirm that automatic shutdown is actually enabled and that no idle process keeps the server running.

The world appears to disappear after shutdown

Verify the provider’s save-restore behavior, check the archive timestamp and keep an independent download. Do not assume that an advertised archive replaces your own backup strategy.

Verdict: which low-cost path is sensible?

For a world you plan to keep running, Godlike.Host remains listed first here: scheduled tasks, frequent backups with restore and a panel that lets you resize the server as your mod list grows cover most of the checks above.

TickServ is the clearest fit for occasional play when its hourly Eco rate, automatic shutdown and nearby location match your needs. Its detailed table includes €0.02/hour 4 GB entries and €0.03/hour listed 8 GB entries, despite the page headline beginning at €0.03/hour. BESTNET-GSERVER is easier to budget for a continuously available world, with October 2026 reference monthly prices of US$6.57, US$11.26 and US$19.97, but its caps and prices still need to be checked against your real RAM, build and mod requirements.

“Still good” comes down to adequate resources, compatible builds, reliable save handling, acceptable latency and controls you can use. Compare those items at checkout, retain your own backups and treat all advertised performance-related figures as starting points until your group has tested its actual world.
