Flying, commuting through a dead zone, or dealing with an outage? You can download games for Android and iPhone that are intended for play without Wi-Fi—but the word “offline” does not guarantee that a game will work immediately in airplane mode. Install it and test it before you leave, especially if it may need a first online launch or additional files.
How to tell whether an offline game will really work without Wi-Fi
App-store labels and editorial lists are useful starting points, not a guarantee that every feature works offline. A game may require an internet connection for its first launch, downloading extra content, signing in, or displaying ads. Its requirements can also change with updates or vary by region.
For Android, the independent Offline Android Games catalog says it checks titles in airplane mode and records details such as ads, login requirements, download size, and suitability for lower-end devices. That is more specific than an “offline” label, but it is the catalog publisher’s assessment, not a Google certification. Apple’s editorial collections identify games for offline play, including a collection described as “No internet required.” They are a useful source of iPhone and iPad suggestions, but availability and behavior should still be checked for the version in your store.

Offline games for iPhone and iPad
Apple’s The Best Offline Games collection spans several styles, including Good Pizza, Great Pizza; Wordscapes; Blackbox; Automatoys; Retro Bowl; Crossy Road; Solitaire Grand Harvest; Merge Dragons!; KAMI 2; and Vampire Survivors.
Apple also has a collection explicitly framed around playing without Wi-Fi. Its examples include Tetris, Gardenscapes, Good Coffee, Great Coffee, Crossy Road, Township, Balatro, Grand Mountain Adventure, Subway Surfers, Vampire Survivors, Idle Miner Tycoon, Tiny Island Survival, and Dicey Dungeons. Offline Android Games reports 41 verified games in its 2026 catalog and describes its checks as airplane-mode tests. Its examples include DATA WING for racing, Master of War – Forces of Eo for strategy, and Alien Shooter titles for action. The catalog also records fields including login, ads, size, and low-end-device fit, which can help narrow the choices if storage or device performance matters. Check the specific game entry at Offline Android Games rather than assuming every title has the same requirements.

Use Google Play or another official developer-approved store where possible. “APK” describes an Android app installation package; it does not tell you whether the source is safe or whether that build works offline. The listings covered here do not verify a particular APK mirror, so avoid treating an unfamiliar download site as an endorsed source.

Prepare a game before a flight or outage
- Install it while connected. Use your device’s official store when available, and allow any initial game files or updates to finish downloading.
- Open the game once online. Complete any setup, sign-in, or tutorial the game requests. This can reveal requirements that are not obvious from the store description.
- Test airplane mode. Turn on airplane mode, then launch the game and try the mode you intend to play. If it stalls, asks you to connect, or blocks the game, choose another title before travel.
- Check storage and access again before leaving. Keep the installed game and any downloaded content on your device; updates, sign-in changes, and game behavior can affect offline access.
