Free Sons of the Forest server hosting is possible only when you host the dedicated server yourself. The server software costs nothing to download, but your own computer, electricity, internet connection and network administration provide the infrastructure. A managed host can remove the technical work, but the available evidence does not show a free managed tier for this game. In practice, choose between self-hosting on hardware you already have or paying for a hosted plan.
What “free” means for a Sons of the Forest server
There are two separate costs that are often confused. The dedicated-server software is free: it is distributed as Steam app 2465200. The machine that runs it is not free unless you already own suitable hardware and an internet connection. Self-hosting transfers the recurring costs and responsibilities to you.

If you shut the machine down, lose power or lose connectivity, players lose access. A managed server charges a provider to supply the always-on machine and network, usually through a control panel.
The dedicated-server download uses an anonymous SteamCMD login. Therefore, the computer running the server does not need to own or install the game. Players still need their own game access to connect and play; the server machine only needs the dedicated-server files.

Option 1: Self-host for no hosting fee
Self-hosting is the only clearly free route identified for this game. It is best when you already have a spare desktop or server, can configure your router, and accept responsibility for uptime and troubleshooting.
Hardware and connectivity requirements
- Processor: a dual-core Intel or AMD CPU is the minimum cited by setup guides. A quad-core processor is a better target for steadier performance when several players are active.
- Memory: allocate at least 8 GB of RAM to the server machine.
- Storage: keep at least 12 GB of free disk space for the installation and its files. Extra space is sensible for updates, logs and backups.
- Availability: the computer must stay on whenever your group expects to play. Sleep, hibernation and automatic shutdown interrupt the server.
- Internet: the connection must accept inbound traffic, and the router must be able to forward the server’s UDP ports to the correct local address.
These are guide figures rather than a guarantee for every patch, player count or operating system. Treat them as a starting point and check the files generated by your installed version.
Install the dedicated server with SteamCMD
SteamCMD is the commonly cited installation method. On a Windows machine, install SteamCMD, open a command prompt in its directory and run:

The anonymous login is why the server machine does not need the game in its Steam library.

Keep the installation directory in a location where the account used to run the server has read and write permission. If validation reports errors, repeat the command after checking disk space and the network connection. Do not assume that a previous installation has the same configuration as a newly generated one; updates can change defaults.
Configure the world and administrators
After the files are installed, edit dedicatedserver.cfg to set the server’s available options. The exact keys and defaults can change with game updates, so use the configuration file shipped with your current build rather than copying an old example wholesale.
Administrators are added through ownerswhitelist.txt. Add the platform identifiers required by the file’s format, save it, and restart the server if the running process does not reload the list automatically. Keep this file restricted to trusted players: anyone listed as an owner can receive elevated control over the server.
Start the server and keep it running
- Finish the configuration and save the files in the installed server directory.
- Launch the dedicated-server executable supplied by that installation. Leave its process running; closing the console or signing out can stop it.
- Prevent the host computer from sleeping and make sure your operating system and firewall allow the server process to continue listening.
- Record the machine’s local IPv4 address, because the router rule must point to that address. A DHCP lease change can silently break an otherwise correct rule, so reserve the address in the router when that feature is available.
The server’s control panel, log output or console should be your first place to check for bind errors, configuration syntax problems and port conflicts. Do not forward ports until you know which ports the current configuration actually uses.

Ports: check your generated configuration before forwarding
Port numbers are version-sensitive. Current setup guides commonly list these UDP ports:

An older guide lists 27015 and 27016 as defaults instead. That difference is precisely why a copied port list can fail after an update. Open the configuration created by your installation, identify the active values and protocol, and use those values for both the operating-system firewall and the router’s port-forwarding rules. Forwarding TCP when the server expects UDP will not make the server reachable.
Router and firewall setup
Create a separate inbound firewall rule for each required UDP port and direct each router rule to the server computer’s reserved LAN address. The labels differ by router, but the required information is the same: external port, internal port, UDP protocol and destination IP.
Test from outside your home network. Ask a friend to join, or connect a phone or laptop through a mobile hotspot and try the real public join path. Testing only from the host’s LAN can produce a false result because some routers cannot loop a public address back into the same network.

- CGNAT: your internet provider may place several customers behind one public IPv4 address. In that case, normal port forwarding on your router cannot accept unsolicited connections. Ask the provider whether a public address is available or use a different hosting arrangement.
- Double NAT: a modem/router plus a second router can leave the forwarding rule on the wrong device. Put the downstream router in the appropriate bridge or access-point arrangement, or forward through both layers if your network design requires it.
- Hairpin NAT: outside players may connect while you cannot connect through the public address from inside the house. Use the game’s LAN listing for the local connection; this symptom does not necessarily mean the server is offline.
- Wrong LAN address: the rule may still point to an old DHCP address after a reboot. Check the server computer’s current address and reserve it.
- Firewall mismatch: a router rule cannot override a blocked Windows rule. Verify that the server process is permitted on the active network profile and that every configured UDP port is allowed.
Windows and Linux choices
Windows: the straightforward path
Endnight is reported to ship a Windows server binary. For most self-hosters, Windows therefore involves the fewest compatibility decisions: install SteamCMD, download app 2465200, edit the configuration, allow the ports and run the supplied binary.
Linux: possible, but less direct
The same community documentation notes that a native Linux server binary is not supplied. Linux users generally run the Windows build through Wine, often inside a community-maintained Docker image. This can be attractive if you already administer Linux, containers and persistent services, but it adds another layer where an update or image change can introduce problems. Windows is generally the simpler route when your priority is getting a first server online quickly.

A managed provider rents you an already-connected machine and exposes controls through a web panel. The provider normally handles the public address, port allocation, machine maintenance and power, while you manage the game settings and player access through the panel.
The available material does not identify a free managed plan for Sons of the Forest. Prices, billing periods and service-level guarantees were not established, so do not assume that a “free server” search result is a permanent, no-card tier. Check the provider’s current game support, renewal price, cancellation terms, backup policy and actual uptime commitment before paying.

One cited example of a managed configuration includes a dual-core AMD CPU, 8 GB of RAM and 100 GB of disk. Those specifications describe that example, not a universal requirement or performance guarantee. A plan with more storage does not automatically provide more CPU capacity, memory or better network routing.

How to choose the right route
Choose self-hosting when
- You already have a spare computer meeting the dual-core, 8 GB RAM and 12 GB free-space starting figures.
- You can leave it powered on and maintain a stable connection.
- Your provider gives you a reachable address rather than CGNAT, or you have a documented way around that limitation.
- You want unrestricted access to configuration files and the operating system.
Choose managed hosting when
- Your home connection is behind CGNAT, double NAT or restrictive inbound-firewall policies.
- You do not want a spare computer running 24/7 or do not want to administer Windows, Wine or Docker.
- Your group needs a predictable public endpoint and convenient restarts through a panel.
- You accept a recurring fee and have verified the provider’s current game support, resources, backups and renewal terms.
Troubleshooting a server nobody can join
- Confirm the process is running. Check the server console and logs for startup or port-binding errors.
- Read the current configuration. Verify GamePort, QueryPort and BlobSyncPort values rather than relying on an old guide.
- Check the local address. Make sure the router forwards to the machine that is actually running the process.
- Check protocol and firewall. The listed ports are UDP; allow them in the operating-system firewall and router.
- Test externally. Use a friend or a mobile hotspot. A successful outside connection proves the public path works.
- Separate local from public failure. If outsiders connect but you cannot, use the LAN listing because the router may lack hairpin NAT.
- Investigate the ISP path. If no outside tester can connect despite correct rules, check for CGNAT or an additional NAT device before changing game settings.
Do you need to buy the game to run a server?
No—not on the server machine. SteamCMD can download the dedicated server anonymously using app 2465200, so that computer does not need a game license or the regular game installation. The people joining should have their own legitimate game access, but the host machine only needs the dedicated-server software and the resources to run it.
Bottom line for free Sons of the Forest hosting
If “free” means no monthly hosting bill, self-host on a computer you already own. Install the free dedicated server with SteamCMD, configure dedicatedserver.cfg, add trusted administrators in ownerswhitelist.txt, forward the UDP ports shown by your current configuration and test from outside your home network. If you cannot provide 24/7 hardware or a reachable connection, managed hosting is the practical alternative—but it is paid, and no free managed tier was established.
