There is no verified official free Factorio hosting service from Wube Software. In practice, you have three choices: a third-party free tier with restrictions, a time-limited virtual-server trial, or Wube’s headless server running on your own computer or a paid VPS. The first two can be useful for testing, but only self-hosting gives you a server without provider-imposed session or player-slot caps.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Factorio servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.

What “free Factorio hosting” actually means
Search results often mix three different products under the word “free.” They have different costs, reliability and obligations:
- Free third-party tiers: a host supplies a managed Factorio instance at no charge, usually in exchange for short sessions, limited slots, advertisements, queues or reduced control.
- Cloud trials: a VPS provider gives temporary credit or a trial period. This is not permanent free hosting; the server normally becomes billable when the trial ends or its credit is consumed.
- Self-hosting: you run Wube’s dedicated headless server on hardware you control. The software itself can run without a hosting fee, but your electricity, internet connection or VPS still has a cost.
As of the research date, no verified statement showed Wube offering a free hosted-server program. A discussion about whether Wube might offer dedicated hosting does not establish that such a service exists or is planned.

Third-party free tiers: what to check before you commit
Factorio Zone
The available summary describes Factorio Zone as free to run and reports a four-hour session limit. It also makes clear that the service is not affiliated with Factorio or Wube Software. A four-hour cap can work for a short cooperative build, but it is poorly suited to a persistent factory: the world may stop while nobody is online, and you need to confirm whether the save is retained between sessions.

A Steam community post says Skynode allowed up to five people at once, with three hours of uptime that could be extended to as much as 24 hours by watching advertisements. The post is approximately 1,400 days old, so these figures are especially likely to be stale. Do not plan a campaign around them without checking the current control panel and terms.

Gaming4Free
Gaming4Free lists a free tier with 2 GB of RAM, 16 player slots and no credit card requirement. Its promotional material names Space Age, Bob’s mods and Krastorio 2 support. Those are provider claims, not independently verified measurements. Confirm the CPU allocation, storage quota, automatic shutdown policy, save-download method and whether the advertised mod support applies to the free tier.
AxentHost
AxentHost advertises up to 16 GB of RAM on free servers and says no card is required. A large RAM number alone does not establish useful Factorio performance: CPU time, storage speed, process priority and host oversubscription can matter just as much. Ask how much CPU is guaranteed, how long an idle server remains online, and whether you can export your save.
Questions to ask any free host
- Is the limit measured per calendar day, per launch or per uninterrupted session?
- What happens to the save when the quota expires or the server is suspended?
- Can you download the save and restore it elsewhere?
- Are mods and custom scenarios allowed, and can you select the Factorio version?
- Are there queues, forced restarts, advertisements or public-server requirements?
- What network port and protocol are used, and can you restrict access with a password?
- Who can access logs, saves and player identifiers?
Keep a local copy of every important save. A free service can disappear, change its limits or remove an instance with little notice.

“Free” VPS offers are trials, not permanent hosting
Listings describe a 30-day Kamatera trial with a $100 credit and a 30-day VPSServer.com trial covering services valued up to $100. These offers can provide enough time to learn Linux administration or test a modded server, but they are fundamentally different from an ongoing free tier. The allowance may end before 30 days if the virtual machine consumes the credit quickly.
Before creating a trial server, read the provider’s current billing page for card requirements, automatic conversion, eligible regions, bandwidth and cancellation rules. Set a spending alert, record the trial’s end date and delete the virtual machine when the test is over. Do not describe a trial as “free forever,” and do not leave a production world there unless you understand what happens when the credit reaches zero.
Self-hosting the official headless server
Self-hosting is the only route in this set with no provider-imposed session or player-slot cap. You can run it on a home PC that stays powered on, or on a paid VPS. Wube’s dedicated headless build omits graphics and sounds, reducing the download size and allowing the server to run without a desktop environment.

System and operating-system requirements
The Factorio Wiki states that current releases require glibc 2.31. CentOS and RHEL 7 ship with glibc 2.17, so those older distributions need additional work or replacement. Choose a supported modern distribution rather than trying to force the binary onto an incompatible base system.

Check the official Factorio download page and make sure the server build matches the clients before you create a long-running world. Do not rely on an old guide that labels a particular release as current; one third-party guide reportedly called 2.0.77 stable and 2.1 experimental, but that status was not confirmed.
Basic setup sequence
- Choose the machine. A home PC costs no hosting fee but depends on your electricity, upload bandwidth and router. A VPS costs money but is reachable without leaving a household computer on.
- Install the headless package. Download the server build for your operating system from the official Factorio source and unpack it. Verify that the machine meets the glibc requirement.
- Prepare a save. Use an existing save archive or create one with the Factorio client, then place it in the server’s saves directory. Keep an untouched backup outside the server.
- Start the server. Wube documents the
--start-servercommand-line option. A typical invocation is./factorio --start-server saves/my-world.zip; adjust the executable and save path to match your installation. - Review server settings. Wube’s example settings file is maintained in the official factorio-data repository. Its comments describe publishing a public server to the official matching service and note that publication requires Factorio.com login credentials or a token. Leave publication disabled if you want a private friends-only server.
- Open the network path. The commonly reported default is UDP port 34197. Verify the port against the current Wiki, allow it through the host firewall and, for a home server, forward it from the router to the machine running Factorio.
- Test locally, then remotely. Join from the same network first. Have a friend test from outside your network before announcing the address to a wider group.
- Automate and protect it. Run the process under a dedicated user, restrict administrative access, make scheduled copies of saves and logs, and arrange a clean restart after operating-system updates.

Troubleshooting the most common failures
Friends cannot connect
Confirm that the server process is running, the Factorio port is allowed as UDP rather than only TCP, and the router forwards traffic to the correct internal address. If local players can join but people outside the home cannot, investigate carrier-grade NAT or an upstream firewall; port forwarding cannot bypass an address you do not control.

The server will not start
A glibc error usually indicates an operating system older than the build supports. Upgrade to a compatible distribution or use a newer VPS image instead of replacing system libraries blindly. Also check that the executable has permission to run and that the save path is correct.
The world stops unexpectedly
On a free third-party tier, this is often a session or idle limit. Check the provider’s current quota before changing the save. On a self-hosted machine, inspect process logs, available disk space and operating-system sleep settings.
Players receive a version or mod mismatch
Install the same Factorio release and mod set on the server and every client. When changing versions, take a backup first; a world upgraded by a newer build may not be safely usable by an older one.
Which option fits your use case?
- One evening or a small experiment: try a free tier, but choose one whose current session and save-retention rules you can confirm.
- A month-long evaluation: a VPS trial can provide root access and a realistic test of administration, provided you monitor credit and billing.
- A persistent friends-only factory at no hosting charge: run the headless server on a home machine and accept the networking and uptime work.
- A public or always-on community server: budget for a VPS or other paid hardware. It removes the uncertainty of free-tier shutdowns and gives you predictable resources.
The practical bottom line is simple: free managed hosting is convenient but constrained and often advertised with unverified or outdated terms; trials are temporary; self-hosting is the only no-cap approach, though the infrastructure is not free.
