Free Terraria hosting usually means free server software, not a free always-on computer. You can let one player host a temporary session, run Re-Logic’s dedicated server on a computer you already own, or use a provider’s free or credit-based plan. Those choices differ sharply in uptime, control, maintenance, capacity, backups and mod support.

The three ways to host Terraria for free
Terraria multiplayer does not have one universal free-hosting product. Your practical choices are a session host, a dedicated server on your own machine, or a third-party service that covers some compute cost through a free tier or credits.

Host & Play: free and simple, but not 24/7
The official setup guide describes Host & Play as the simplest multiplayer method. One player starts a world through the game, and friends join that session over a local network or online connection. It works well when everyone is playing at the same time.

The limitation is structural: the host’s game session is the server. When that player exits, loses the connection or shuts down the computer, the world is no longer available. Friends cannot enter at an arbitrary time while the owner is offline, so Host & Play is not a persistent community server.
Choose Host & Play when
- Your group plays together in scheduled sessions.
- You want the fewest network and configuration steps.
- The host is comfortable keeping the world on that player’s machine.
- You are playing on the same home network or do not need independent access between sessions.
Do not choose it when
- Friends need to play while the original host is away.
- You want scheduled events or a world that remains online overnight.
- You need server-side configuration, automated backups or a dedicated mod stack.
Self-hosting the official dedicated server
Re-Logic distributes dedicated-server software at no software charge. The Official Terraria Wiki defines the role plainly: “A Terraria server provides a platform for players to connect over the internet or other network for multiplayer gaming.” The software is free; the machine and operating costs are not.
A dedicated server runs separately from the game client. Players can disconnect without stopping the world, and another person can join later if the process and computer remain online. You are also responsible for every operational task that a paid host might otherwise handle.
Hardware and capacity
The Official Terraria Wiki lists 500 MB of free RAM for a small world. That is a documented baseline, not a promise that every setup will perform identically. Memory demand rises with world size and player count, and the computer also needs resources for its operating system and any other services you run.
The default maximum is 16 players. Server settings allow a configurable range up to 255 players, but changing the number does not guarantee that a home connection, CPU, memory or world can handle that load. Treat the player limit as a configuration ceiling rather than a performance guarantee.

Network requirements
The dedicated server listens on TCP port 7777 by default. A server inside a home network normally needs two network changes:

- Allow the server application or TCP port 7777 through the computer’s firewall.
- Forward TCP port 7777 on the home router to the computer running the server.
Players outside your home then connect using your public address and the configured port. Router menus use different names, so look for “Port Forwarding,” “NAT,” or “Virtual Server.” Reserve a stable local address for the server computer first; otherwise, a router lease change can send the forwarding rule to the wrong device.
If your internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT or you cannot change the router, an overlay VPN can provide an alternative private network path. Every player must use the same overlay, and its security and latency become part of your server’s design.
Launching and configuring a world
Download the dedicated-server package from Terraria’s official distribution, place it in a dedicated folder, and launch the server executable for your operating system. On first run, select an existing world or create one, set the maximum players and password, and confirm the listening port. The exact executable and menu labels differ by platform and game version, so follow the instructions included with the current package.
Keep the world files outside temporary folders and record which file is active. Configuration commonly includes the world path, port, player limit, password and ban settings. Make changes while the server is stopped or through the server’s supported console controls; editing a live world file can corrupt it.

Backups and recovery
Self-hosting makes you the administrator. Before updates or major building projects, stop the server cleanly and copy the world file to a separate disk or cloud location. Keep several dated generations rather than overwriting one backup. Test that a copy can actually be loaded, because a backup that was never verified is only an assumption.
If the process crashes, restart it and check the server log for the first error, not just the final shutdown message. If the world will not load, stop trying to repair the original in place: preserve it, restore the newest known-good copy and investigate on a duplicate.
What a free third-party host may provide
Some providers advertise free servers funded by spare capacity, account limits, advertising or credits. A current example, AxentHost, advertises a no-card Terraria service with dashboard controls for starting and stopping a server, viewing the console, managing files and worlds, editing configuration and accessing mod folders. Those are advertised control-panel features, not proof of a particular uptime or capacity level.
A free panel does not automatically establish 24/7 availability. Before moving a valuable world, verify the provider’s current terms for:

- Automatic sleep, shutdown or manual-start requirements.
- How long an inactive server and its files are retained.
- Storage quotas and whether world backups are included.
- CPU, RAM and player limits, including burst or fair-use policies.
- Data-center location and likely latency for your group.
- Whether custom server software, tModLoader and your intended mods are allowed.
- What happens when credits expire or the account is unused.
- How to export the world before suspension or deletion.
Credit-based hosting can be useful when you only need occasional sessions, but it changes the meaning of “free.” You may have to earn, claim or renew credits, start the server manually, or accept that the instance disappears after a period of inactivity. Read the retention clause before treating the provider as the permanent home of a world.

Vanilla servers and mods are separate decisions
A vanilla dedicated server runs the standard Terraria server stack. Mods generally require a compatible mod-loader server, such as tModLoader, plus the exact mod files and versions expected by every player. A provider that offers a “mods” folder may still lack the loader, memory headroom or version support your mod pack needs.
Check compatibility at three levels:
- Game version: the server, clients and loader must target compatible Terraria releases.
- Loader version: the server must run the same supported loader family as the clients.
- Mod set: every required mod, dependency and configuration must match across players.
Start with a copy of the world when testing mods. A mod can change world data, add dependencies or prevent a later vanilla server from loading it correctly. Keep a documented list of enabled mods and versions so you can reproduce a working setup after a reinstall.
Availability: what “online” really means
There are three different availability promises, and free methods commonly satisfy only one of them:

- Machine availability: a self-hosted server is reachable while the computer, internet connection and server process remain healthy.
- Provider availability: a hosted instance is reachable only while the provider keeps it powered, funded and within its free-plan rules.
None of these facts alone proves guaranteed 24/7 uptime. A home computer can sleep, reboot for updates or lose power. A provider can suspend an idle instance, reclaim free capacity or change its terms. Plan your group’s expectations around the weakest dependency.

If you already own a computer that can stay awake and have a suitable internet connection, self-hosting can avoid a recurring hosting charge. It is not costless in an accounting sense: electricity, bandwidth, hardware wear and administrator time are real trade-offs.

Troubleshooting the common failure points
Friends cannot connect to a self-hosted server
- Confirm the server process is running and listening on TCP 7777.
- Test the connection from the same home network first to separate game problems from internet routing.
- Check the operating-system firewall rule and the router’s forwarding destination.
- Verify that your public address has not changed and that your internet service is not using carrier-grade NAT.
- If port forwarding is impossible, evaluate an overlay VPN and have every player join the same virtual network.
The world is unavailable when the owner logs off
That behavior is expected with Host & Play. Move the world to a dedicated server on a computer that remains online, or to a provider that keeps the instance running under its free-plan rules.
The server feels slow or disconnects under load
Reduce simultaneous players, check memory and CPU usage, and compare the world size with the documented 500 MB small-world baseline. Close competing applications, avoid running an overloaded mod pack and test whether the problem occurs for every player or only those far from the server’s location.
A modded server will not start
Confirm that the loader, game version, mod versions and dependencies match. Temporarily move mods out one at a time to identify the failing component, and restore the unmodified world if a test damaged its data.
A hosted world has disappeared
Check the provider’s inactivity, credit and retention policy before assuming a technical failure. If the panel still exposes files, export the world immediately. If it was reclaimed under the plan’s terms, recovery may not be possible; that is why independent backups matter even when a dashboard advertises file management.
Which free route should you choose?
Choose Host & Play for scheduled co-op
Use it when convenience matters more than persistence and everyone normally plays together. It avoids router administration and gives the host immediate control, but the world follows the host’s session.
Choose self-hosting for maximum control
Use the official dedicated server when you can leave a computer running and are willing to manage port 7777, firewall rules, updates, backups and crash recovery. It provides the clearest ownership of world files and configuration without a hosting subscription.
Choose a provider when you need a remote machine
A free or credit-based provider can spare you from exposing a home router and may offer a web console, file manager and mod-folder controls. Treat every uptime, storage, backup, player-limit and mod-support statement as plan-specific until the current terms confirm it, and keep an export of the world outside the provider.
Bottom line
Free Terraria hosting is a trade, not a single feature. Host & Play is the easiest but ends with the host’s session. Self-hosting gives you a persistent world and full file control, provided your computer and network stay online. A third-party free plan can supply a convenient control panel, but its continuity depends on limits that may change. Decide first whether you need a world available when nobody is playing; that answer determines whether “free” co-op is enough or whether you need a dedicated machine and an explicit backup plan.
