Godlike.Host is our top pick for Enshrouded server hosting: it offers Enshrouded servers with free DDoS protection, up to three free backups a day with restore, and a Pterodactyl-based game panel. Beyond that, the right choice for your group depends on active players, total cost, server location, disclosed resources, backups, configuration access, and support. Managed hosting removes much of the setup and maintenance; self-hosting can avoid rental fees if you already have suitable hardware, a reliable connection, and time to maintain it.

Quick answer: which option fits your group?

Choose a managed provider when you want an always-on world without leaving a home PC running, configuring router ports, or maintaining server software. Choose self-hosting when you have a spare Windows machine, adequate upload capacity, and the confidence to handle updates, firewall rules, backups, and outages yourself. No independent cross-provider benchmark establishes a performance winner, so a low advertised price alone is not a reliable ranking.

Godlike.Host Its pages list Enshrouded servers, 10 data-center locations, free DDoS protection, up to three free backups a day with restore, a Pterodactyl-based panel with a config editor and SFTP/FTP access, and 24/7/365 support by live chat or ticket. These are provider claims; see the current plans for prices. Groups wanting a managed panel with restorable backups, a choice of regions, and a free server to try first. Which of the 10 locations is closest to your players, the exact plan resources, and the backup and restore steps in the panel. The free Enshrouded server must be extended every 3 hours, has limited panel features and one location.
GPORTAL Keen Games names it as a rental partner. Its offer page snapshot lists 4–16 slots from $9.40 per 30 days and example US Dallas configurations. Groups wanting an in-game rental route and a conventional managed panel. Regional availability, renewal price, included backups, restore access, resource allocation, and configuration limits.
Nitrado PC plans shown for 6, 8, and 16 slots at $9.79, $12.99, and $20.99 respectively for 30 days; the setup guide describes automated backups. Groups whose size matches those tiers and who value a documented setup process. Latency to your party, billing type, backup retention and restore controls, and the exact features in the selected region.
Self-hosted dedicated server Keen Games publishes CPU, memory, SSD, disk, and upload guidance and provides a Steam Tools installation method. Players with suitable hardware, network access, and willingness to administer the server. Can the machine stay online, accept connections, receive updates, and produce recoverable world backups?

Slot count is not a performance benchmark. Compare the same number of active players, the same billing period, a comparable region, and the total amount charged at renewal. Provider statements about uptime, latency, hardware, or support remain marketing claims unless independently tested.

Official capacity and hardware requirements

Memory, processor, and storage

Keen Games’ 2024 dedicated-server guidance recommends 16 GB of RAM for both its 4–6-player example and its 16-player example. The 16-player example calls for a stronger CPU, so matching the memory number alone does not make a machine equivalent to the larger recommendation. Both examples call for SSD storage with at least 30 GB free.

The official 2025 FAQ gives a different kind of planning figure: approximately 4.4 GB of physical RAM while the server is idle, plus up to 100 MB of additional RAM per player. The same FAQ says the uncompressed server files occupy roughly 13 GB and recommends 30 GB of free disk space. These are published figures from Keen Games, not an independent contemporary benchmark; leave headroom for the operating system, updates, logs, temporary files, and multiple backup copies.

Upload capacity

Keen Games recommends 2 Mbit/s of upload capacity per player. That makes the guidance roughly 8 Mbit/s for four simultaneously connected players and 32 Mbit/s for a full 16-player session. Treat those as recommended capacity figures, not a guarantee of latency: household upload can be shared with video calls, cloud backups, and other games, and an internet service may deliver less capacity during congestion.

What the figures mean for rented servers

A managed plan should provide the machine, storage, connectivity, and operating-system maintenance, but providers do not disclose enough comparable CPU and contention data to infer that a plan with more slots will run better. Ask what RAM and storage are allocated, whether CPU resources are shared, where the server is located, and what happens when the plan reaches its slot limit. If a listing does not state those details, mark them as unknown rather than assuming that a low price includes premium hardware.

For Enshrouded, the practical points are backups and administration. It lists up to three free backups a day with restore, and a Pterodactyl-based panel with a task scheduler, a config editor, sub-users with permissions, SFTP/FTP access, and server management through a Discord bot. You can upgrade or downgrade from the panel with prorated billing, and support is available 24/7/365 by live chat or ticket; its game pages give an average reply time of about twenty minutes. See the current plans for prices on the Godlike.Host Enshrouded server page.

It also offers a free Enshrouded server (1–2 GB) for trying the panel. The free server must be extended every 3 hours, has limited panel features, and runs in one location, so treat it as a test rather than a permanent world.

GPORTAL

Keen Games’ official FAQ says it partnered with GPORTAL for rentals available from inside the game; the FAQ also says other providers can be used. That partnership confirms an official rental relationship, not a universal quality or value ranking.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The retrieved GPORTAL offer snapshot shows 4–16 slots, plans from $9.40 per 30 days, and example configurations in Dallas, United States. The price is time-sensitive. Confirm the exact region, tax treatment, renewal amount, slot count, and included management tools at checkout. The available evidence does not establish a particular backup frequency, restore workflow, CPU allocation, or measured latency for GPORTAL, so verify those items directly in the plan you intend to buy.

Nitrado

The retrieved PC listing shows 6 slots for $9.79 per 30 days, 8 slots for $12.99 per 30 days, and 16 slots for $20.99 per 30 days. These are listing snapshots in US dollars and on a 30-day term; they are not a promise of today’s price or of the same price in every country. The Nitrado setup documentation describes automated backups and explains server installation and configuration.

For a four-player party, a six-slot plan may be the closest published tier, but paying for extra slots does not by itself prove better performance. Check whether the selected data-center region is close to all players, how long automated backups are retained, whether you can trigger or download a restore, and whether billing renews on a 30-day cycle or another term.

How to compare hosts without being misled by slot counts

  1. Count simultaneous players. Use the highest number likely to connect at once, not the number in your gaming group’s chat. A four-person group that occasionally has a fifth player should compare six-slot or larger plans.
  2. Normalize the term. Convert every offer to the same period, such as 30 days or 12 months. Include setup charges, taxes, currency conversion, and the renewal price rather than relying on an introductory figure.
  3. Check geography first. Select a data center near the majority of players. A cheaper distant server can produce a worse experience than a slightly more expensive nearby one.
  4. Ask for resource details. Record stated RAM, storage type, CPU information, and whether resources are dedicated or shared. If a provider does not disclose CPU or contention information, label it unknown.
  5. Inspect backup controls. Find the schedule, retention period, storage location, download option, and exact restore procedure. A marketing reference to “backups” is not enough to establish that you can recover a damaged world.
  6. Test administration access. Look for file access, configuration editing, log access, scheduled restarts, version controls, and the ability to change the query or game settings you need.
  7. Read support limits. Confirm support hours, response channels, and whether staff will restore a save, troubleshoot a network path, or only restart the process.
  8. Calculate migration friction. Determine whether you can download the world save and configuration if you later move hosts. Also plan for character data, which is handled differently from the world save.

Setting up a managed Enshrouded server

Exact panel labels differ, but the safe sequence is the same. Keep the provider’s current instructions open because ports, file paths, and available settings can change with game updates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Select the edition and region. Choose the PC Enshrouded server product, the smallest slot tier that covers your peak simultaneous players, and a data center close to the group. Review the recurring price before confirming.
  2. Wait for provisioning. Do not upload saves or invite players until the panel reports that installation is complete. Record the server address, query port, game port, and any generated credentials.
  3. Configure the world. Use the panel’s configuration editor or file manager to set the server name, password, player limit, and other supported options. Save a copy of the original configuration before changing it.
  4. Start and test privately. Connect one player first, then test a second connection from the same region. Check that the world loads, the expected settings apply, and the server appears in the intended browser or direct-connect workflow.
  5. Create a known-good backup. Make or download a backup after the first successful start. Note its timestamp and where it is stored; do not assume the provider’s automated system is downloadable.
  6. Invite the group. Share the address and password through a private channel. Keep the password out of public listings and change it if an unknown player joins.
  7. Schedule maintenance. Plan restarts around the group’s play times, update the server when the game requires it, and take a fresh world backup before major changes.

Nitrado’s documentation describes testing through the query port and forwarding UDP ports 15636–15637 in relevant configurations. A rented server may handle this forwarding internally; a home router usually will not. Follow the provider’s current panel instructions rather than copying a port rule from an old forum post.

Self-hosting from Steam

Keen Games’ installation article says the title includes a dedicated-server executable and describes installing it through Steam’s Tools section. The article’s February 2024 platform statement said Windows was supported and Linux support was planned at that time; that dated statement should not be treated as proof of current Linux support.

The official installation article is available at Dedicated Server Installation on Steam. The practical workflow is:

  1. Prepare the host. Use an SSD with at least 30 GB free, target 16 GB of system RAM, and select a CPU appropriate to the player count. Keep the machine connected to power and prevent sleep while the world is expected to be available.
  2. Install the tool. In Steam, open the Tools section, locate the Enshrouded dedicated-server tool, and install it. Start the executable once so it can create enshrouded_server.json.
  3. Edit the JSON configuration. Stop the process before editing. Change only documented keys, preserve valid JSON syntax, and keep an untouched copy so a bad edit can be reversed.
  4. Allow the process through the firewall. Create rules for the ports specified by the current official instructions. Do not expose unrelated services, and remove temporary test rules after confirming the connection.
  5. Configure the router. If the host is behind a home router, forward the required UDP ports to the host’s fixed local IP. Nitrado’s guide references UDP 15636–15637 for its documented setup; verify the current official and provider instructions before applying those values to a self-hosted installation.
  6. Test from outside the home network. A connection from the same LAN can succeed even when internet players are blocked. Have a friend test, or use another connection, after the server is running.
  7. Automate safe operations. Use the operating system’s startup and restart facilities only after you have a reliable manual launch. Schedule backups while the server is stopped or in a state that produces a consistent save.
  8. Maintain it. Apply game and server updates, monitor disk space and logs, review firewall and router changes, and keep an offline copy of important world saves.

Self-hosting replaces a monthly rental with your own electricity, hardware depreciation, internet service, configuration time, and responsibility for outages. It is economical when that equipment is already available; buying a machine solely to avoid a modest rental can cost more than several months of managed service.

Backups, characters, and moving between hosts

Keen Games’ FAQ distinguishes two kinds of data. Character progression is stored on client machines, while the dedicated server stores a save file for each world. A world backup therefore protects the shared map and its state, but it may not contain every player’s character progression.

Before migrating, have every player preserve the relevant client-side character data according to the game’s supported process, and separately download the server-side world save and configuration. Keep the original files until the new server has been tested by all players. After migration, verify that the world loads, permissions and settings are intact, and each player can see the expected character and inventory state.

For routine protection, keep at least one recent local copy and one older copy from before a major update or configuration change. Name copies with the server, world, and timestamp. A backup that cannot be located or restored is not a recovery plan, so perform a test restore on a spare instance when your provider permits it.

Common problems and fixes

The server is online but nobody can join

  • Confirm that the process is running and that the panel shows the expected game and query ports.
  • Check that the address and port shared with players match the current server details.
  • For self-hosting, verify the host’s local IP has not changed and that router forwarding points to it.
  • Check firewall rules and test from outside the host’s network.
  • Ask the provider whether the selected region is experiencing an outage before changing configuration files.

Players experience lag or rubber-banding

  • Compare the affected players’ locations with the server region and move the server closer to the majority if possible.
  • Check whether the home connection is saturating its upload capacity. Keen Games recommends 2 Mbit/s upload per player, so background cloud sync or streaming can matter.
  • Reduce simultaneous players or upgrade to a plan with clearer CPU and memory allocation; more advertised slots alone do not prove more processing capacity.
  • Record the time, player count, and server logs, then give those details to support rather than repeatedly restarting the world.

The server crashes after a setting change

  • Stop the server and restore the last known-good JSON configuration.
  • Check for a missing comma, invalid quotation mark, or unsupported key.
  • Restart with the smallest change possible and keep a copy of each working version.
  • If the world still fails, restore the latest verified world save to a test instance before overwriting the live data.

A world appears to have rolled back

  • Stop new play immediately so the current state does not overwrite evidence.
  • Compare the provider’s backup timestamps with your own downloaded copies.
  • Restore the newest known-good world save, then have players confirm their client-side progression separately.
  • Document the incident and change the backup schedule or download routine if the available copies were too old.

How much should you pay?

The published snapshots illustrate why prices must be normalized. GPORTAL is listed from $9.40 per 30 days for plans covering 4–16 slots. Nitrado’s listed 30-day tiers are $9.79 for six slots, $12.99 for eight, and $20.99 for 16. Godlike.Host’s prices change with region and on-page offers, so see the current plans. These numbers use different regions, slot counts, and possibly different tax and renewal rules; they are not a league table.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a four-player group, calculate the monthly and annual total for the smallest plan that covers peak use, then add any required backups, extra storage, reserved IP, or management features. Compare that total with the value of your own hardware time and electricity. A self-hosted machine that is already powered on may have low incremental cost; a new machine, faster upload tier, or paid static-address service changes the calculation.

A practical decision framework

Choose managed hosting when

  • The world should remain available when the owner’s gaming PC is off.
  • No player wants to configure router forwarding, firewall rules, updates, and recovery.
  • The provider offers a nearby region, usable file access, and a backup process you have verified.
  • The recurring fee is acceptable in exchange for reduced maintenance.

Choose self-hosting when

  • You already have a machine that can meet the 16 GB RAM, SSD, CPU, disk, and upload guidance.
  • You can keep it online and reachable, including after router or power changes.
  • You are comfortable editing the JSON configuration and maintaining backups.
  • You need direct control over files and updates and accept responsibility for downtime.

Delay the purchase when

  • The listing does not state the renewal price or the server region.
  • You cannot identify how to download and restore a world save.
  • The advertised slot count is being used as the only evidence of performance.
  • Your group has not decided whether all players need an always-on world.

Verdict

For 2026, our top pick for Enshrouded is Godlike.Host, thanks to its restorable backups, Pterodactyl-based panel, 24/7 support, and choice of 10 locations. Treat GPORTAL and Nitrado as candidates to verify against your region, party size, and backup requirements, not as a proven universal ranking. Managed hosting is the simplest path for an always-on Enshrouded world; self-hosting is the flexible, potentially cheaper path for players who already have the hardware and networking capability. The best purchase is the one whose total recurring cost, location, resources, and recovery process you can confirm before committing.
