freeimage.dll is a FreeImage library file, and Windows may report it as missing, not found, or unable to load. The safest fix is usually to identify the application requesting it and repair or reinstall that application rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing Windows files, establish what failed:
- Which program or game shows the message? The error normally appears immediately after launching one particular application.
- When did it begin? Check whether it followed an application update, incomplete reinstall, extraction problem, cleanup utility, antivirus detection, or moving the program to another folder.
- What does the complete message say? “Missing” and “not found” usually indicate an absent file. “Could not be loaded” or “not designed to run on Windows” can indicate a wrong architecture, corruption, or another missing dependency.
- Is the application 32-bit or 64-bit? A 32-bit application needs the 32-bit FreeImage build even when Windows itself is 64-bit.
- Does the application folder contain
freeimage.dll? If it does, the problem may be a bad build or a dependency rather than a missing file. - Was the file quarantined? Windows Security may have removed it after an update or scan.
FreeImage is a third-party, open-source image library. It supports image loading, saving, conversion, and formats including PNG, BMP, JPEG, and TIFF. It is not a Windows component, hardware driver, or Microsoft runtime.
1. Repair or reinstall the application that displays the error
This is the highest-probability solution because freeimage.dll normally ships beside the executable that uses it. The application installer should restore the matching DLL and any companion files.

Use the application’s repair option
- Close the affected program.
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the application in the list.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options, if shown.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
Microsoft does not expose these options for every traditional desktop application. If Repair is unavailable or does not help, check the application’s own launcher or installer for Repair, Verify files, or Scan and repair.
For a game, run its file-verification feature while logged into the launcher that installed it. This is preferable to manually replacing one DLL because verification restores the complete, compatible application package.
Reinstall from the publisher
If repair fails:
- Back up application settings or saved data if the publisher documents where they are stored.
- Uninstall the affected program from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from the application’s publisher or use the publisher’s original launcher.
- Install the program to its normal location.
- Start it before copying back custom files or modifications.
An interrupted extraction, a failed update, or a cleanup utility can remove only one application file. A clean reinstall restores the program’s expected version of freeimage.dll, not merely a file with the same name.
If the program was portable, extract the complete archive again into a new folder. Do not copy only freeimage.dll from another installation. Portable applications may depend on a particular FreeImage build and nearby support files.
Run the application with elevated permissions only as a test
Some older installers fail to write their files correctly without elevation.
- Right-click the application’s shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program as an administrator.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Launch the application.
This is not a replacement for reinstalling the program. If elevation makes no difference, turn the setting off unless the publisher specifically requires it.
2. Check whether antivirus removed the file
If the application worked previously and freeimage.dll disappeared after a scan or update, inspect Windows Security.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections involving the application’s installation folder.
- Open the detection to view its path and action.
Restore the file only when all of the following are true:
Recommended Free Tools
- The application came from a trusted publisher.
- The detected file was inside that application’s legitimate installation folder.
- You recognize the application and its installer.
- You have confirmed the detection is a false positive.
Microsoft warns that restoring a genuinely malicious file can expose the device again. If the detection is unclear, do not restore it. Remove the unsafe application, scan the computer, and reinstall the legitimate program from its publisher.
If Windows Security repeatedly removes the same file immediately after reinstalling, stop copying replacements into the folder. The application installer, its modification, or another file in the package may be triggering the detection.

3. Confirm the DLL is in the correct application folder
A DLL can exist on the computer and still be unavailable to the program that needs it.
To inspect the location:
- Right-click the application’s shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, note the Target path.
- Open that folder in File Explorer.
- Look for
freeimage.dllbeside the application’s executable.
You can also right-click the running application in Task Manager, choose Open file location, and inspect the folder.
Do not move the DLL into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. Application-local DLLs are normally loaded from the program’s own directory. A copy placed in a system directory can create conflicts and will not reliably repair the original application.
A file named freeimage.dll in an unexpected temporary folder, a system folder, or an unrelated download directory deserves additional scrutiny. Do not assume that every copy with this name is legitimate.
4. Resolve 32-bit and 64-bit mismatches
FreeImage publishes separate WIN32 and WIN64 binary distributions. The correct architecture is determined by the application, not simply by the version of Windows installed.
A 64-bit version of Windows can run both 32-bit and 64-bit applications. Therefore, copying a 64-bit DLL into a 32-bit program folder can still produce a loading failure.

Look for architecture information in:
- The application’s documentation.
- Its installer name or launcher settings.
- The publisher’s system requirements.
- The executable’s installation folder or properties.
- The application’s support information.
Messages such as these often indicate more than a simple missing file:
- “Freeimage.dll cannot be loaded.”
- “There is a problem with your freeimage.dll. It was not designed to run on Windows.”
- “Bad image.”
- A launch failure even though
freeimage.dllis visibly present.
These messages can result from a wrong architecture, a corrupted file, an incompatible build, or a missing dependency. Restore the DLL from the application’s own installer instead of guessing which FreeImage package to use.
The official FreeImage project currently lists the FreeImage3180Win32Win64.zip distribution, containing WIN32 and WIN64 material. That archive is appropriate when the application’s publisher documents FreeImage as its dependency and the application was built for that release. It is not a universal repair package for every program that happens to request freeimage.dll.
Reported file databases may list older copies, including 32-bit builds identified as 3.16.0.0, 3.15.4.0, 3.15.2.0, 3.15.0.0, or 3.14.1.0. Those observations do not establish a universal version or file size. A program may require an older, patched, or differently built copy.

5. Check for a missing dependency
Sometimes freeimage.dll is present, but Windows cannot load it because another DLL that it needs is absent. Reinstalling the application normally restores those dependencies together.
If the publisher’s documentation identifies Microsoft Visual C++ as a prerequisite:
- Download the supported Visual C++ Redistributable package from Microsoft’s documentation.
- Choose the architecture required by the application.
- Run the installer.
- Select Repair if the runtime is already installed.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected program.
Microsoft provides current packages named vc_redist.x86.exe, vc_redist.x64.exe, and vc_redist.arm64.exe. Choose based on the application’s architecture. Older Visual C++ versions, including 2013 and earlier, can remain installed side by side when an older application requires them.
Do not assume that every FreeImage error requires Visual C++. The FreeImage library and the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable are separate products. Install or repair the runtime when the application’s documentation or a dependency diagnostic indicates that it is needed.
If the program still fails, reinstall it instead of collecting individual runtime DLLs from the internet.
6. Repair Windows components only when other symptoms support it
freeimage.dll is not a protected Windows system file, so System File Checker normally will not restore it. SFC and DISM become appropriate when several applications are failing, Windows is behaving abnormally, or the tools report broader component corruption.
Open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. Restart Windows after both commands complete and test the affected application.
If DISM cannot obtain repair files from Windows Update, Microsoft documents specifying a matching Windows repair source:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with a valid repair-source path. Do not invent a source folder or use installation files from a different Windows build without checking compatibility.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, test Windows and the application again. If it reports that it could not repair some files but the only problem remains one application’s freeimage.dll, return to that application’s installer. Windows repair commands are not a substitute for reinstalling a third-party program.

Repeatedly hunting through SFC and DISM output can make an isolated application problem harder to diagnose. Outbyte PC Repair provides a free scan that shows what it identifies, while repair is performed by the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix when that program owns freeimage.dll.
7. Update or reinstall drivers only for graphics-related evidence
FreeImage processes image data, but it is not a graphics driver. Do not begin with Device Manager unless the failure appeared alongside display problems, crashes in several graphics applications, or a recent driver change.
To check the display driver:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider, date, and version.
- Use Update driver only when Windows or the hardware vendor provides a suitable package.
For a clean driver repair, download the driver from the graphics hardware manufacturer, close running applications, run the installer, and choose its clean-install option if provided. Restart Windows and test the application.
Do not expect a driver update to restore a missing application DLL. It is relevant only when the evidence points to a wider graphics or display problem.
Manually checking several hardware pages and matching driver packages can be time-consuming. Outbyte Driver Updater offers a free scan that identifies what it finds, while driver installation is handled by the full version; use it only as an optional convenience, and keep the affected application’s official reinstall as the primary repair.
8. Use System Restore for a recent system-wide change
System Restore is reasonable when the problem began immediately after a driver, Windows update, or software installation and multiple programs are affected.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next > Finish.
System Restore affects system files, settings, and installed programs, but not personal files. It is not the first response to one missing DLL in one application. If the problem appeared after a failed application update, repairing or reinstalling that application is more targeted.

Do not run:
regsvr32 freeimage.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by certain COM or ActiveX components. FreeImage is a normal native runtime library, not generally a self-registering COM server.
Running the command commonly produces an error stating that the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found. That result does not mean Windows needs a different copy or that the DLL should be registered. Restore it through the application’s installer instead.
Avoid random DLL downloads
Do not download freeimage.dll from a DLL collection site, an unknown file mirror, or another person’s computer. The replacement may contain malware, belong to a different application, use the wrong architecture, or require a different companion library. It may also hide the real problem, such as antivirus quarantine or an incomplete installation.

FAQ
Is freeimage.dll part of Windows?
No. It belongs to the third-party FreeImage project and normally arrives with an application that uses image-format support.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Which program installed it?
There is no single universal owner. Products including DocRecord and Visual Pinball have publicly reported FreeImage errors, but the filename alone cannot identify the program on your computer. Find the application that displays the error and inspect its installation folder.
Should I put it in System32?
No. Keep the DLL with the application that requires it. System32 and SysWOW64 are not general-purpose storage locations for application files.
Should I use regsvr32?
No, not for the normal FreeImage library. It is not generally a self-registering COM or ActiveX DLL.
Does a 64-bit Windows installation need the 64-bit DLL?
Not necessarily. A 32-bit application needs the 32-bit FreeImage build, even on 64-bit Windows.

Will Visual C++ Redistributable always fix this error?
No. It may help when a required Microsoft C/C++ runtime is missing, but the application installer is the correct first repair.
Can SFC restore freeimage.dll?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows files, while freeimage.dll is an application file. Use SFC and DISM when there is evidence of broader Windows corruption.
Is “not designed to run on Windows” proof that the file is malware?
No. That message can result from a wrong architecture, corruption, or an incompatible build. It should still prompt you to verify the file’s source and reinstall the application from its official installer.
