“Friend slop” is an informal label for inexpensive, chaotic co-op games whose main appeal is spending time with friends. The mistakes, pratfalls and reactions of the group often matter more than winning or following a plot. The term took off during a 2025 wave of such games, led by R.E.P.O. and PEAK, and it is still a contested word rather than a formal genre.
What “friend slop” means
The phrase describes a social experience as much as a design category. A friend-slop game is usually cheap, easy to pick up, and built around shared chaos: someone knocks over an object, someone falls off a cliff, and the funniest moment is the group reacting. The games are pitched as approachable and low-commitment, so a session can be a 20-minute diversion or an entire evening.
The social core
In this category the entertainment often comes from failure. A run that collapses in a silly way can be more memorable than a clean win, and the games are designed to make that collapse easy to share. That is the main distinction between friend slop and more demanding co-op titles, where success and coordination are the point.
Not a formal genre
No standards body, storefront tag or publisher defines the term. It spread as shorthand, and writers apply it loosely. A game can fit the label without matching every trait described below, and a game that some players call friend slop may be described by its developer in other terms.

The games The Verge pointed to
The Verge’s December 20, 2025 feature by Stevie Bonifield is the main reporting source for the label’s 2025 context. It names the examples below. They are illustrations, not a complete or ranked list. Prices are the figures reported in that article, and the table notes where it gives none.
| Game | Premise and tone | Price detail in the source |
|---|---|---|
| R.E.P.O. | Goofy robot avatars; humor comes from clumsily breaking objects. The Verge calls it one of the biggest co-op titles of 2025. | Not stated |
| PEAK | Lighthearted co-op climbing: players attempt to scale perilous mountains, and failed runs and friends’ mishaps are part of the fun. | Not stated |
| Guilty as Sock! | Players role-play court showdowns as sock puppets. | Not stated |
| Lockdown Protocol | Takes inspiration from Among Us: sabotage amid timed chores in an isolated base. | Not stated |
| Mage Arena | Magic duels in which players shout their spells. | $2.99 arrival price, as reported in The Verge’s December 2025 article. This is historical reporting, not a current price. |
R.E.P.O.
R.E.P.O. is the title most closely associated with the 2025 wave. Its robot avatars and object-breaking comedy are the clearest examples of the genre’s slapstick. Any reader choosing it should check its current storefront price and platform support, since the reporting does not establish them.
PEAK
PEAK is the most frequently cited example of the label’s lighter side. It is a climbing game, and the reporting stresses that a group falling apart on a mountain is entertaining in its own right. It is also the reason the horror traits discussed below should be read as tendencies, not requirements.
Guilty as Sock!
Guilty as Sock! turns courtroom drama into puppet theatre. Its appeal is performance: the players are the cast, and the absurdity of the format carries the session.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Lockdown Protocol borrows the social-deduction structure of Among Us and adds timed chores in an isolated base. Sabotage and suspicion provide the tension, while the chores keep the group busy and under pressure.

Mage Arena
Mage Arena is a duel game in which the spell-casting is shouted aloud, so the voice is part of the mechanic. It is the example where the price is explicitly given, which is useful context for how cheap these releases can be, but the figure belongs to late 2025 reporting.
Traits that show up most often
The Verge names several traits that recur across the category. They describe common tendencies, not a checklist every game must pass:
- PC play: the games discussed are PC-centred in the reporting.
- A typical price under $20: The Verge’s characterization of the category as a whole. It is a qualitative description, not a market-wide survey, and it is not a price guarantee.
- Proximity voice chat: players talk in-game, so the voice itself is part of the experience.
- Wacky physics: unpredictable object behaviour is a source of both comedy and failure.
- Survival-horror elements: present in some titles, but The Verge explicitly notes that PEAK is a lighter example than the horror description implies.
Why the label stuck
The Verge’s explanation for the appeal centres on low barriers to entry: relatively little money and time are required, the games are easy to learn, and they give a group a social reason to gather. The article contrasts this with more strategic or demanding co-op games. This is the reporter’s analysis rather than proven market causation, and it is best read as a plausible account of why the format found an audience.
Where the term came from
A secondary explainer, mutl.space’s “What Is Friendslop? Meaning, Origin and the Real Bottleneck” by Alexander Vahtin, attributes the co-op use of “friendslop” to a joke post dated March 17, 2025, and says the term moved from a jab toward a genre label. That origin is reported secondhand. The original post and its reported view count were not independently checked here, so treat the account as one explainer’s version of events.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is “slop” an insult?
The word is disputed. Its origin was a negative jab, and critics argue these games may prioritise viral moments over substance. Some players and developers have embraced the label anyway. The Verge quotes Paige Wilson, community manager at PEAK’s publisher Aggro Crab, who said:

“We actually think friend slop is a fire term,” they told The Verge. “Sure, it started with the intention of [having] a negative connotation, but I think we always saw the term as funny and actually pretty accurate. It’s used to describe a low-cost game that you and your friends can pick up whenever, have some fun, hang out, and expect a bit of jank. I think some people might not view it as this, but we do!”
Whether the label is a compliment depends on who is using it. A reader who wants polish and depth may hear criticism, while a group looking for a cheap night together may hear a description of exactly what they want.

How to choose a friend-slop game
If you are comparing titles in this category, the reporting supports judging them on these axes:
- Tone: comedy-horror or lighthearted. PEAK and Guilty as Sock! sit at the lighter end; the horror elements mentioned by The Verge sit closer to the other end.
- Group size and coordination: Lockdown Protocol rewards coordination and suspicion; R.E.P.O. and Mage Arena reward shared chaos.
- Voice chat: whether proximity voice chat is central to the game. If it is, a PC headset with a microphone can help, though it is optional and no specific model is recommended here.
- Price and hardware: the typical under-$20 range, checked against the current storefront price for each title.
- Fun when a run fails: if the group’s mistakes are the entertainment, the game is doing what the label promises.
Before buying, confirm current prices, platform requirements, player caps and matchmaking options on each storefront. The 2025 reporting does not establish them for 2026.
What the evidence does not establish
No market-size, revenue or sales statistic for friend-slop games is established by the reporting used here, so this article makes no claim about how large the category is. The price points are historical reporting from late 2025. The term’s origin rests on a secondary explainer rather than the original post.
