Which Mafia game is best? My ranking weighs story and character work most heavily, then considers pacing, mission and gameplay variety, period atmosphere, and the technical condition of the edition being discussed. Those are editorial criteria, not a standardized score: a player who values open-ended systems over a tightly shaped crime story could reasonably order the games differently.

This is a ranking of the four core stories, not five separate games. Mafia: Definitive Edition is a remake of the original Mafia, so it represents the first story here; Mafia II: Definitive Edition and Mafia III: Definitive Edition are updated editions of the second and third games.

How this Mafia ranking works

I rank the four stories by how well their writing, pacing, gameplay, and setting work together. Story and characters get the most weight because each entry is built around a crime narrative; mission variety and atmosphere help distinguish the games, while edition-specific technical condition matters to anyone choosing which version to play. This is a personal ordering, not a claim that one game wins for every player.

The editions need a little care. 2K describes Mafia: Definitive Edition as rebuilt from the ground up, with an updated script, expanded backstories, added cutscenes, and new gameplay sequences. It is a remake of the first game, not a fifth core story. The Definitive Edition labels on Mafia II and Mafia III refer to updated editions; 2K described the second game’s version as having remastered, 4K-compatible visuals. Those edition changes can affect the experience, so the list names the edition being ranked rather than treating all releases as interchangeable. 2K on Mafia: Definitive Edition; 2K on Mafia: Trilogy; 2K on Mafia II: Definitive Edition.

#1 Best Overall

4. Mafia III: Definitive Edition

Why it ranks fourth

Mafia III has the most systemic, repeatable-feeling gameplay of this group, and that can be a strength if you want room to approach criminal operations through play rather than move rapidly from one story beat to the next. But its story-led momentum is less consistently focused than the entries above it: the larger structure asks the player to spend time working through activities around its central conflict, and that can soften the dramatic drive.

That lower placement is not a verdict that its subject matter or setting is weaker. It is a trade-off: more room for gameplay systems, less of the concentrated narrative shape I value most in this franchise. The ranking refers to Mafia III: Definitive Edition, the updated edition listed alongside the other core games in the official collection materials.

Rank #2

3. Mafia: The Old Country

A focused prequel with a different scale

Mafia: The Old Country moves the series back to 1900s Sicily for an origin story. Take-Two positioned it as a linear, highly polished narrative experience, a format that makes it a natural fit for players who want a guided crime saga rather than a broad sandbox. Its period setting gives the franchise a fresh historical starting point, and its emphasis on narrative presentation and voice acting are notable strengths.

I place it third because its focused design does not, by itself, guarantee the same cumulative character and story impact as the two entries above it. Critical reactions are not uniform: TechRadar’s review praised the narrative presentation and voice acting while raising reservations about the overall experience, while PC Gamer’s review criticized the story and gameplay execution. Those are different assessments, not evidence of a settled consensus or an objective franchise ranking.

Rank #3
KARMA: The Dark World - Limited Edition - PS5
  • UK PSN account may be required for any online features

Take-Two announced the game for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC through Steam, and also named NVIDIA GeForce NOW. Its announcement gave August 8, 2025 as the launch date; Steam’s franchise page lists August 7, 2025. The sources do not explain the one-day difference, so those dates should be attributed rather than collapsed into a single claim. Take-Two’s announced $49.99 Standard Edition price was the historical launch price, not a current price. Take-Two’s announcement; Steam’s Mafia franchise page.

2. Mafia: Definitive Edition

The strongest all-around telling of the first story

The remake takes the first game’s story and rebuilds its presentation for a modern release. Its expanded character backstories and added scenes give the narrative more room, while new gameplay sequences distinguish it from a simple visual update. That combination of crime-story focus, period atmosphere, and refreshed presentation makes it the best entry point for a player who wants to experience the original Mafia story today.

Rank #4

  • Travel-friendly design: Compact and lightweight, this game is easy to pack, store, and carry—perfect for road trips, vacations, or spontaneous fun wherever you go.
  • Gift for all ages: A thoughtful and fun gift for everyone, making it the perfect choice for any occasion, whether it's a birthday, holiday, or just because!

It narrowly misses the top spot because its remake status is also its limit in this comparison: it is a new version of the first story, not a wholly separate chapter that expands the series’ range. The edition’s overhaul is substantial, but readers choosing among the core narratives should count it as the first Mafia, not as an additional numbered installment. 2K’s announcement details the remake’s rebuilt production and added story material. 2K on Mafia: Definitive Edition.

1. Mafia II: Definitive Edition

The best balance of crime saga, character, and period mood

Mafia II takes the top spot for the balance this ranking prizes: a strong central crime narrative, memorable character relationships, and a vivid sense of period place. It has the shape of a saga rather than a sequence of loosely connected activities, and its atmosphere helps make the story’s world feel integral to the drama. For a player deciding which single story to start with, it is my pick for the series’ most satisfying blend of narrative and setting.

The ranking is about the story entry as presented in Mafia II: Definitive Edition, not a claim that its remaster is technically flawless on every platform. 2K characterized this edition as offering remastered, 4K-compatible visuals; that description establishes the visual update, not identical performance or condition across platforms. 2K’s edition announcement.

Which Mafia game should you play first?

  • For the best all-around story pick: Start with Mafia II: Definitive Edition, my highest-ranked entry.
  • To begin at the beginning: Play Mafia: Definitive Edition. It is the modern remake of the first story, not a separate fifth entry.
  • For the most systems-driven play: Consider Mafia III: Definitive Edition; its lower position here reflects my emphasis on narrative pacing, not a lack of gameplay ambition.
  • For a linear prequel set in 1900s Sicily: Choose Mafia: The Old Country, while keeping in mind that reviewers differ on how well its story and gameplay come together.

The official PlayStation Mafia: Trilogy page and 2K’s collection announcement present the three earlier stories together, with The Old Country as the newer origin story outside that trilogy. Physical availability and current prices depend on region, platform, and seller; the cited announcements do not establish current inventory.
