If there is no suitable open slot, expand the district when that option is available. Check the selected building’s requirements, costs, and effects in the in-game panel before you commit.
How to build a building in a district
- Construct a suitable district. Open the district construction panel and choose one that matches the function you need: Housing, Food, Extraction, Industrial, or Logistics. Districts occupy tiles on the map; six tiles is a common footprint, not a universal rule. Check the placement preview and current requirements before building. 11 bit studios’ official guide covers construction and related systems, while the district options and footprint should be confirmed in your game.
- Select the completed district. Open its panel and inspect the available actions, building slots, and eligible buildings. Buildings are placed in district slots rather than freely on any map tile, and many must first be unlocked in the Idea Tree.
- Expand the district if needed. If the district has no suitable free slot, use its expand action if available. Expansion requirements vary by district and building; not every district requires expansion before construction.
- Choose and place a building. Select an available building in the district panel, review its displayed requirements, then confirm placement in the slot. Verify the current Heatstamps and Prefabs costs, workforce needs, and operating requirements shown for that building.
- Check the consequences of its location. Consider nearby hubs, area effects, and how the building fits your workforce and resource plans. A slot being available does not by itself mean the building is the best choice for that district.
How to get a building slot
First select the district and inspect its panel: it shows the slots and actions available for that district. If no suitable slot is open, look for the district’s expand action. Expansion can add building capacity, but the exact rules depend on the district and the building you want to place.
For example, the cited Research Institute walkthrough places the Institute in an expanded Housing District. The Research Institute is also an example of an Idea Tree unlock: research unlocks the building before it can be selected for construction. That example illustrates one route to a slot, not a rule that every building must go in an expanded Housing District.
What to check before placing a building
- Eligibility and capacity: Make sure the selected district can host the building and has a suitable available slot.
- Unlock status: If the building is unavailable, check whether it needs to be researched in the Idea Tree.
- Construction and operation: Review the displayed Heatstamps, Prefabs, workforce, and any ongoing requirements. Costs and requirements are building-specific and can change with updates.
- Effects and location: Compare what the building produces or changes with its placement effects, including nearby hubs and area coverage.
- Capacity trade-offs: Expansion may provide another slot, but consider whether using district capacity for this building fits your other needs.
Why a building may not be available
- The district is not eligible: Check the selected district’s panel; district category can limit which buildings it can host.
- The building is locked: Look for its unlock in the Idea Tree.
- No suitable slot is free: Use the district’s expand action where available, then check the panel again.
- You do not meet a requirement: Review the live cost, workforce, and operating details shown before confirming construction.
11 bit studios’ Frostpunk 2 | Advanced Guide, published December 20, 2024, includes construction chapters on hubs, area effects, expansion, workforce juggling, emergencies, and advanced buildings. The interface and building requirements can change with patches, so use the current in-game panel for exact costs and effects rather than relying on an older numeric guide.
