FTB Academy 1.16 runs on Minecraft 1.16.5 with Forge. To host it, install Java 8, use the official server installer for the same FTB Academy release as your players, allocate at least 4 GB of RAM (6 GB is the published recommendation), accept the EULA, and test the server locally before exposing its configured port. Release 1.4.1 is the latest version shown on the official Feed The Beast page, so it is the sensible default unless everyone in your group needs another release.

What FTB Academy 1.16 is

FTB Academy 1.16 is a Forge-based educational modpack for Minecraft 1.16.5. Feed The Beast describes it as “A modpack for beginners,” so its progression is intended to teach modded-Minecraft systems rather than drop players into an unexplained collection of machines and recipes. The official listing shows six releases, with 1.4.1 as the latest listed release. It records 125,557 installs and 454,959 plays in its 2025 page statistics, was last updated on 12 February 2025, and lists 1 July 2021 as the pack’s release date.

The server and every client must agree on three pieces of identity: the FTB Academy release, Minecraft 1.16.5, and the Forge profile supplied for that release. A player can have the right mod names but still fail to connect if the pack revision or loader build differs. Treat the release number as part of the server address: decide which release you are running before anyone installs the client.

Requirements before you install

Memory and Java

The official requirements are 4 GB of RAM minimum, 6 GB recommended, and Java 8. The 4 GB figure is the baseline for the game process, not a promise that a machine with exactly 4 GB total system memory will be comfortable. Your operating system, launcher, background applications and file cache also need memory. On a small home computer, leave headroom instead of assigning all physical RAM to Java.

Java must be available to both the launcher and the server process. CurseForge notes that Java is required for modpacks and that an outdated Java installation can prevent a profile from launching. Do not assume that a Java version used by another Minecraft installation is the one selected by the FTB App or by the server start script; verify the executable used by each.

Storage, network and account planning

  • Use a dedicated server folder on a local drive with enough free space for the pack, world, logs, backups and future growth.
  • Keep that folder outside OneDrive and other synchronised locations. Sync clients can lock files while the server is writing them and can create confusing permissions or partial-file errors.
  • Have administrator access on the host computer so you can install Java, allow the server through the firewall and run the installer.
  • For an internet server, identify who controls the router, firewall and public IP address. Port forwarding cannot be completed from the Minecraft server computer alone if the router is managed elsewhere.
  • Decide who will make backups and who can stop or update the server. A modded world is much easier to recover when one person owns the maintenance routine.

Install the matching client profile

  1. Install the FTB App from the official Feed The Beast distribution and open its modpack browser.
  2. Select FTB Academy 1.16. Choose release 1.4.1 unless the server operator has specified another release.
  3. Open the profile details before launching. Confirm that it reports Minecraft 1.16.5 and a Forge loader, rather than a different Minecraft generation or modloader.
  4. Let the app finish downloading the pack and libraries, then launch once and reach the title screen. This catches Java and launcher problems before you add a server to the equation.
  5. Record the exact release number shown in the profile. Give that number to every player and require it when they install.

Do not update one player’s profile independently after the server has been built. If the app offers a newer pack release later, treat that as a coordinated server migration: back up the world, update the server files, then have every player update to the same release.

Download and install the server

Feed The Beast’s versions page provides server files through its server installer and offers installer links for AMD64 Windows, macOS, Linux and FreeBSD. Use the installer belonging to the exact release you selected; do not guess a Forge filename or mix files from another version. The installer bundles the Forge build expected by that pack release.

1. Create a clean server directory

Create a folder with a short, ordinary path, such as a folder directly under a drive or your home directory. Avoid special characters, restricted operating-system directories and synchronised folders. A separate directory makes it easier to back up the world and to replace pack files without touching your client installation.

2. Run the official installer

Download the server installer for your operating system from the selected FTB Academy version page. Run it with permission to write to the dedicated directory and accept the generated files there. Let the process complete; a server pack normally creates the Forge libraries, configuration, mods, scripts and other files required by the server.

If the installer presents a choice of destination, point it at the empty folder you created. If it creates a nested directory, note that actual path before you attempt to start the server. Keep the installer and the resulting files for recovery, but do not continually rerun the installer over a live world as a substitute for updating.

3. Accept the Minecraft EULA

Start the generated server script once. On a first run, Minecraft commonly stops after creating an EULA file. Open that file, read the licence and change the acceptance setting only if you agree. Save it, then run the generated start script again. Use the start file supplied by the installer rather than inventing a Forge command: the bundled script knows which libraries and Forge entry point this release requires.

4. Set memory deliberately

Open the generated start script in a text editor and inspect its Java memory flags. Begin within the published range: 4 GB is the minimum and 6 GB is recommended. A typical flag pair is expressed as an initial heap (-Xms) and maximum heap (-Xmx); edit the values in the supplied script rather than deleting the rest of its arguments. Never assign more memory than the host can spare for the operating system and other services.

Start with the recommendation, watch actual usage and increase only when the server is consistently short of memory. More allocated RAM does not fix a missing mod, a broken Forge installation or a slow disk. It can also leave too little memory for the operating system, causing swapping and worse performance.

5. Complete a local test

Run the start script and wait until the console finishes loading and reports that the server is ready for connections. The first launch can take longer while libraries and world data are created. Join from the same computer using the local address shown by your normal Minecraft networking setup. Walk around, open a few inventories and stop the server from its console with the normal shutdown command or script option; do not close the window abruptly while the world is saving.

A clean local test proves that Java, Forge, the pack files and the world can load before router configuration complicates diagnosis. If it fails here, solve the Java, path, memory or file problem first; opening a port will not repair a server that cannot start.

Make the server reachable by friends

Router and firewall

Only after the local test succeeds should you expose the server’s configured port. In the server properties, identify the value assigned to server-port; forward that same port from the router to the host computer’s local network address. Create a firewall rule that allows the Java server process or that port for the network profile you actually use. If the host’s local address changes, a forwarding rule aimed at the old address will stop working, so reserve the address in the router or assign it carefully.

Have a friend test from outside your home network. Testing from the host itself or from another device on the same Wi-Fi can succeed even when the internet-facing rule is wrong. Some internet providers place customers behind carrier-grade NAT, which prevents ordinary inbound forwarding; in that case you need a provider-supported public address, a relay/VPN arrangement or a managed host.

Share access safely

  • Give friends the public address and configured port, not the host’s private address.
  • Keep the server software and Java patched to versions compatible with this pack, and restart it during a planned maintenance window.
  • Use the server’s operator controls to grant only the permissions each player needs. Do not hand out operating-system administrator access just because someone wants to use a Minecraft command.
  • Back up the world before changing mods, configuration files or pack releases.
  • Tell players when the server will be offline for backups or maintenance. A predictable schedule prevents players from treating a save operation as a crash.

Compatibility rules for every player

Every connecting player should install the same FTB Academy release and Forge profile as the server. CurseForge’s profile guidance states that a mod and profile must use the same modloader, and incompatible Minecraft-version or loader combinations cannot be selected together. In practical terms, “almost the same” is not enough: Minecraft 1.16.5 with the wrong Forge build, or a different Academy release with similar-looking mods, can produce a missing-mod screen, a registry mismatch or a disconnect during loading.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When a new player joins, ask for a screenshot or text copy of the profile’s release, Minecraft version and Forge information. Compare those values before investigating network problems. If the server was updated, have the player update the client profile rather than copying random individual mods into an otherwise different installation.

Self-hosting versus managed hosting

Self-hosting costs no separate monthly server fee, but you supply the hardware, internet connection, port forwarding, backups, uptime and troubleshooting. It is a good fit when one player can leave a computer online and is comfortable editing scripts and router settings. A managed service provisions the machine and network for you, usually with a control panel and support, but adds a recurring bill and can limit low-level file or mod access.

Factor Self-hosted computer Managed server
Setup effort Install Java, the FTB server files, scripts, firewall rules and router forwarding yourself. Usually choose a plan and deploy through a provider panel; pack-specific setup still needs verification.
Recurring cost No hosting subscription, although electricity, hardware and internet costs remain. Monthly fee; current price and availability depend on the provider and can change.
File and backup control Full access to world, configuration, scripts and local backups. Panel or file access varies; confirm how downloads and scheduled backups work.
Player capacity Limited by your CPU, memory, storage and upload bandwidth. Limited by the selected plan and its shared or dedicated resources.
Network administration You handle public addressing, forwarding and firewall rules. The provider handles the public network endpoint; you still manage player access and pack compatibility.
Maintenance You install updates, inspect logs and recover failures. Support may help with the platform, but you remain responsible for the pack’s release and world changes.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Published managed-hosting examples

The official Feed The Beast page identifies BisectHosting as a hosting partner. Treat that as a commercial option, not a technical requirement: the same FTB Academy server files can be run on a compatible host or on your own machine. Check the provider’s current terms, software support and backup policy before paying.

CurseForge documents a hosted-server flow powered by Shockbyte and billed through Tebex. Its published plans are shown below. Prices and availability are volatile, so verify them at the time of purchase; they are not guarantees of performance for every world.

Plan Published price RAM CPU allocation Listed player range
Iron $12 per month 4 GB 2 shared CPUs 1–5 players
Gold $24 per month 8 GB 3 shared CPUs 6–15 players
Diamond $36 per month 12 GB 4 shared CPUs 16–25 players

The documented CurseForge “Join” shortcut is available only for game versions above 1.20.1. FTB Academy 1.16 uses Minecraft 1.16.5, so do not promise that shortcut for this pack. A host may still support the pack through a normal server deployment, but you should expect to upload or select the correct server files and give players the matching client profile.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The launcher will not start the profile

  • Verify that Java 8 is installed and that the FTB App is configured to use a compatible Java executable.
  • Use the launcher’s Repair Installation action, then retry the profile.
  • Review Forge-specific troubleshooting information rather than replacing Forge with a different loader.
  • Move the installation away from OneDrive, special-character paths and restricted directories when the error points to file access or path handling.

The server stops immediately

  • Confirm that the server process can find Java 8; a different Java installation may be selected when the script runs outside the launcher.
  • Read the first meaningful error in the console or log, not only the final shutdown line.
  • Check that the installer completed in the directory from which you are starting the script.
  • Restore the supplied start script if its Forge or library arguments were accidentally removed.
  • Reduce competing applications or adjust the heap within the 4 GB minimum and 6 GB recommendation instead of assigning nearly all host memory to Java.

A ZIP import says “Invalid File”

CurseForge’s troubleshooting guidance says to confirm that the archive contains a manifest.json file. An archive containing only a parent folder, screenshots or an unrelated export is not a valid modpack import. For a server, prefer the official server installer/server files rather than converting a client ZIP by hand.

Players receive a missing-mod or registry error

Compare the server and client release numbers, Minecraft version and Forge profile. Reinstall the complete profile if individual mods have been added or removed. Do not solve a loader mismatch by copying one Forge JAR over another; rebuild from the official release files so the complete dependency set remains consistent.

Players cannot connect from the internet

  • Confirm that the server is running and that a local player can join.
  • Check the configured server-port, router forwarding destination and firewall rule for the same port.
  • Make sure the public address has not changed and that the test is performed from outside the home network.
  • Investigate carrier-grade NAT or double-router setups if forwarding appears correct but outside tests still fail.
  • Verify pack compatibility after the network path works; a Forge mismatch can look like a connection failure even when the port is open.

Backups, updates and routine administration

Back up before every risky change

Stop the server cleanly, copy the world directory and preserve the server configuration before changing the pack release, Forge files or major mod settings. Keep at least one backup on a different drive or machine; a second copy in the same failing disk is not a recovery plan. Label backups with the date and release so you know which client profile can open them.

Update as a coordinated migration

  1. Announce a maintenance window and stop new building or exploration shortly beforehand.
  2. Make a verified world and configuration backup.
  3. Install the target FTB Academy server release in a separate directory when possible, rather than overwriting the known-good installation.
  4. Start it once, inspect the logs and test with an administrator account.
  5. Have every player select the same target release in the FTB App before reopening the server.
  6. Keep the previous server directory until the new version has been tested and the backup has been validated.

Monitor the real bottleneck

Watch memory usage, CPU saturation, disk activity and network upload while several players explore. If the process repeatedly reaches its heap limit, investigate allocation and world activity; if memory is available but ticks slow during exploration, CPU or disk throughput may be the constraint. Player count alone is not a reliable capacity measurement because automated farms, chunk loading and simultaneous exploration can change the workload dramatically.

Recommended setup path

For a small group, the least-error route is: choose FTB Academy 1.16 release 1.4.1, install the FTB App profile, create a clean server folder, run the matching official server installer, use Java 8, accept the EULA, begin with up to the recommended 6 GB allocation if the host can spare it, test locally, then configure the firewall and router. If you do not want to administer a router or keep a computer online, compare a managed plan using the same memory, player-count and backup criteria rather than assuming a provider’s one-click label guarantees 1.16.5 support.
