fxscomex.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows Fax Service component, not a game file or Visual C++ redistributable. If fxscomex.dll is missing, not found, corrupt, or cannot be loaded, repair Windows and its Fax components instead of downloading a replacement DLL.
Microsoft describes the file as the Microsoft Fax Server Extended COM Client Interface. It provides Fax Service Extended COM objects used by fax clients, administration tools, older business software, and custom programs that connect to a local or remote fax server.

The safest repair path is:
- Install pending Windows updates.
- Run DISM and SFC from an elevated Command Prompt.
- Reinstall Windows Fax and Scan if the component is absent.
- Repair the affected fax or business application.
- Check 32-bit and 64-bit paths, antivirus quarantine, and dependencies.
What fxscomex.dll does
fxscomex.dll ships as part of Microsoft Fax Server and belongs to the Windows Fax Service. Microsoft documents it as the DLL required by the IFaxServer::Connect interface.
That means an application may request this library when it tries to:

It is not normally associated with DirectX, .NET, Microsoft Visual C++, a game engine, or a particular PC game. A game or application may display the error, but that does not mean the program owns the file.
Microsoft’s documentation explains the Fax Service development environment and the IFaxServer connection interface.
Where fxscomex.dll should be located
On a standard Windows installation, the file normally belongs in a protected Windows system directory:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
| Windows installation | Native file | 32-bit file on 64-bit Windows |
|---|---|---|
| 64-bit Windows | C:WindowsSystem32fxscomex.dll |
C:WindowsSysWOW64fxscomex.dll |
| 32-bit Windows | C:WindowsSystem32fxscomex.dll |
Not applicable |
The naming is counterintuitive. On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains native 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files.
Do not copy a file from SysWOW64 into System32, or the other way around. A 32-bit fax application may need the 32-bit component even though Windows itself is 64-bit.
The file should generally be Microsoft-signed and located in a Windows system directory. A copy found inside a random application folder deserves additional scrutiny, especially if it has no valid digital signature.
What the error messages mean
These messages usually indicate that Windows or an application could not load the Fax Service component:

- “The code execution cannot proceed because fxscomex.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting fxscomex.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Error loading fxscomex.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “fxscomex.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “DllRegisterServer in fxscomex.dll failed. Return code was: 0x8007007e.”
“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean the named DLL itself is absent. Windows may have found fxscomex.dll but failed to load one of its dependencies.
A “not designed to run on Windows” message commonly points to corruption, an incompatible architecture, or a damaged binary. It does not automatically prove that the file is malware.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and repair system files
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes, depending on Windows Update and disk speed.
Because fxscomex.dll is a Windows Fax Service file, repairing the Windows component store is the best first step.

Install pending updates
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- On Windows 11, select Check for updates.
- On Windows 10, select Check for updates under Windows Update.
- Install all available quality, cumulative, and feature updates.
- Restart when Windows requests it.
- Test the fax application again.
If Windows Update reports that everything is current but the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to complete. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Restart Windows after DISM finishes.
DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as a source for protected system files.
Run System File Checker
Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then interpret the result:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: Windows did not detect corruption in the checked files.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart and test the affected application.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Run DISM again, restart, and run SFC a second time.
- Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service: Restart Windows and retry from an elevated Command Prompt.
Microsoft’s System File Checker guidance recommends using DISM before SFC when Windows files are damaged. If DISM cannot obtain repair files, Microsoft documents matching installation media and repair sources in its Windows image repair guidance.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If you want to reduce the manual work of checking system health, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported Windows problems and show what it finds, while repair features require the full version. It is optional, and DISM and SFC remain the Microsoft-supported repair path.
Fix 2: Reinstall Windows Fax and Scan
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes, plus any download time.
On Windows 10 version 2004 and later, Windows Fax and Scan is delivered as a Feature on Demand. Its capability name is:
Print.Fax.Scan~~~~0.0.1.0
Microsoft also identifies the related package as Microsoft-Windows-Printing-WFS-FoD-Package. Windows Fax and Scan is not preinstalled after Windows 11 version 22H2, so its absence can be normal until you add it.
Install it through Settings
- Press Windows + I.
- Select System.
- Select Optional features.
- Choose View features next to Add an optional feature.
- Search for Fax.
- Select Windows Fax and Scan.
- Select Next, then Install.
- Restart Windows if requested.
- Launch the affected fax application again.
The exact labels can differ slightly between Windows 10 and Windows 11 builds.
Install it with DISM
If the feature does not appear in Settings:
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Add-Capability /CapabilityName:Print.Fax.Scan~~~~0.0.1.0
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Restart Windows.
- Test Windows Fax and Scan or the application that reported the error.
Feature availability can depend on your Windows edition, build, language resources, organization policy, Windows Update access, and repair source. If DISM says that the capability cannot be found, do not download fxscomex.dll from another site. Check Windows Update access and use a matching Windows installation source if your organization manages optional features.
Older Windows versions
On older Windows installations:
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter:
optionalfeatures
- Press Enter.
- Expand Print and Document Services.
- Enable Windows Fax and Scan.
- Select OK.
- Restart if prompted.
Reinstalling the feature may restore the correct architecture-specific system files, but it is not a guarantee for every Windows edition or build. If the component is installed and the file is still damaged, return to DISM and SFC.
Fix 3: Repair the application that reports the error
Time needed: 5 to 30 minutes.
The error may come from an old business application, custom COM program, fax client, installer, or administration utility. The application may be incomplete even when Windows itself is healthy.

Repair a Microsoft Store application
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application.
If Repair does not help, use Reset only if you understand that the application may lose local settings or cached data.
Repair a traditional desktop application
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Change, Repair, or Modify, depending on the installer.
- Complete the repair.
- Restart Windows.
If no repair option exists, uninstall the application, restart, and reinstall it from the original vendor or installation media. Do not assume the application should ship its own replacement copy of a Windows system DLL.
If only one old program reports the error while Windows Fax and Scan works normally, the application’s installation, dependencies, or COM configuration is more likely to be the problem.
Fix 4: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes.
A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows uses the Windows 32-bit system view. It may need:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →C:WindowsSysWOW64fxscomex.dll
A native 64-bit application normally uses:
C:WindowsSystem32fxscomex.dll
Do not solve an architecture mismatch by manually copying files between folders. Repair or reinstall the Windows Fax feature and the affected application instead.
To check your Windows architecture:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Check System type.
To check whether an application is 32-bit, open Task Manager while it is running. On some Windows versions, 32-bit programs appear with a *32 suffix in the Details or Processes view. You can also check the program’s documentation or installer.
A 32-bit program may fail with a missing-module message even when the 64-bit copy exists, because Windows cannot substitute one architecture for the other.
Fix 5: Check Windows Security quarantine
Time needed: 5 to 10 minutes.
Antivirus quarantine is a possible cause, although it is not established as a dominant cause for this specific file.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Look for an entry associated with
fxscomex.dllor the Fax Service. - Expand the detection and inspect the original file path.
- Verify that the path was a legitimate Windows system directory.
- Check the file’s digital signature before considering restoration.
Do not restore a file merely because an application says it is missing. Microsoft warns that Windows Defender may detect a restored file again. If the file was in a protected Windows directory and its signature is valid, restore it only when you are confident it is legitimate, then run DISM and SFC.
If the file came from an application folder, treat it differently. Contact the application vendor or reinstall the application from its official source rather than restoring an unknown binary.
Microsoft explains quarantine and restore behavior in its Windows Security Protection History documentation.

Fix 6: Use regsvr32 only for a genuine registration problem
Time needed: 5 minutes.
regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command. It registers DLLs that implement the appropriate registration entry point. Running it against a missing, corrupt, incorrectly located, or dependency-broken file will not repair the Windows component.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Registration may be relevant if:
- The file exists in the correct system directory
- The file has a valid Microsoft signature
- The error specifically concerns COM registration
- The application vendor or Microsoft documentation instructs you to register it
For a 64-bit DLL on 64-bit Windows, an administrator may use:
%windir%System32regsvr32.exe %windir%System32fxscomex.dll
For a 32-bit DLL on 64-bit Windows, the 32-bit registration tool is:
%windir%SysWOW64regsvr32.exe %windir%SysWOW64fxscomex.dll
On 32-bit Windows, use:
%windir%System32regsvr32.exe %windir%System32fxscomex.dll
Open Command Prompt as administrator before running these commands. If you receive 0x8007007e, the file or one of its dependencies may not be available to the loader. If you receive an architecture error, the DLL and regsvr32 tool do not match.
Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation describes the command’s intended behavior. For a normal missing or corrupted system file, DISM, SFC, and Fax feature repair are safer and more appropriate.
Fix 7: Check fax hardware and related drivers
Time needed: 10 to 20 minutes.
A fax modem or multifunction printer driver does not normally replace fxscomex.dll, but a driver problem can appear at the same time as a fax-service failure.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Modems, Print queues, Printers, and Universal Serial Bus controllers where relevant.
- Look for a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
- Test the fax application.
If the device disappeared after an update, select View > Show hidden devices, then inspect greyed-out entries. For a vendor-specific modem or multifunction printer, download drivers only from the hardware manufacturer or Windows Update.
When several devices have stale drivers, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver versions, while installing updates requires the full version. It is optional, and updating a driver will not replace a damaged Windows Fax system file.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 8: Use System Restore when the failure is recent
Time needed: 20 to 45 minutes.
If fxscomex.dll worked recently and the problem began after a cleanup utility, interrupted installation, feature removal, or Windows change, System Restore may help.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Open Start.
- Search for Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Next.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Select Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart and complete the restore.
System Restore returns system files and settings to an earlier restore point. It does not normally remove personal files, but you should still save open work first.
Why downloading fxscomex.dll is a bad fix
Random DLL download sites can provide:
- The wrong Windows build
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- An altered or unsigned binary
- A file with incompatible dependencies
- A copy that masks the actual component-store problem
- Malware disguised as a system DLL
There is no Microsoft-supported standalone fxscomex.dll redistributable. The safe sources are Windows Update, DISM, SFC, Windows Optional Features, matching Windows installation media, and the original vendor installer for the application that reports the error.
Never place a downloaded DLL into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder as a first-line repair.

Common causes of fxscomex.dll errors
| Likely cause | What usually fixes it |
|---|---|
| Corrupted or missing Windows component | Windows Update, DISM, then SFC |
| Windows Fax and Scan removed | Reinstall the Feature on Demand |
| Incomplete fax application installation | Repair or reinstall the application |
| 32-bit and 64-bit mismatch | Repair the feature and use the correct system architecture |
| Antivirus quarantine | Verify the path and signature, then repair Windows |
| Disk or system corruption | DISM, SFC, disk health checks, or System Restore |
| Missing dependency | Repair Windows and the affected application |
| Private incompatible application copy | Reinstall the application from its original source |
The problem may begin after a Windows update, optional-feature removal, antivirus action, disk corruption, interrupted installation, or system-cleanup utility. It may also appear only when a legacy program tries to use Fax Service COM objects.

FAQ
Is fxscomex.dll safe?
The genuine file is a Microsoft Windows Fax Service component. Verify that it is in the expected Windows system directory and has a valid Microsoft digital signature. Location and signature matter more than the filename alone.
Recommended Free Tools
Is it part of Windows Fax and Scan?
Yes, it is associated with the Windows Fax Service and is used by fax clients and administration software. Windows Fax and Scan is one possible consumer of the component, but other fax applications and custom COM programs may also use it.
Do I need Microsoft Visual C++ to fix it?
Usually not. fxscomex.dll is not a Visual C++ redistributable file. Install or repair Visual C++ only when the affected application separately reports a missing Visual C++ runtime.
Should I run regsvr32 fxscomex.dll?
Only for a specific COM-registration problem when the file is genuine, correctly located, and the registration command is appropriate for its architecture. It is not the normal solution for a missing or corrupted Windows file.
Can Windows Fax and Scan restore the file?
It can restore or stage the related Windows feature when that capability is available for your edition and build. If the file remains damaged, run DISM and SFC as well.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Why does the message say the module is missing when the file exists?
Windows may be unable to load a dependency, or the existing file may be corrupt or the wrong architecture. Check the system component with DISM and SFC rather than copying another DLL over it.
Is fxscomex.dll required for gaming?
Not generally. A game may be the program displaying the message, but the file itself belongs to Microsoft Fax Service. If the error appears only in one game, repair that game and Windows, then check whether an installer or compatibility layer is attempting to use fax-related components.
What is the safest fix?
Run Windows Update, then execute DISM followed by SFC from an elevated Command Prompt. If Windows Fax and Scan or the Fax Service feature is absent, reinstall it through Optional Features or the supported DISM capability command.
