vifxmvft.dll Missing: Identify the App and Repair It Safely

vifxmvft.dll is an old multimedia component identified as the iviMovieEffectDMO Module. It is generally associated with legacy InterVideo WinDVD or InterVideo DVD installations, not with Windows itself.

The safest repair is to identify the program requesting the file and repair or reinstall that program from its original installer, OEM recovery media, or a legitimate vendor download. Do not start by downloading a loose copy of the DLL into System32.

What vifxmvft.dll is

Item Details
File vifxmvft.dll
Internal description iviMovieEffectDMO Module
Category Application component
Historical association InterVideo WinDVD and InterVideo DVD
Windows component No reliable evidence identifies it as a Windows file
Known universal version or size Not established
Most likely repair Repair or reinstall the parent WinDVD or InterVideo application

WinDVD installations included several video-effect and DirectShow/DMO components alongside vifxmvft.dll. The file may also appear with capitalization such as viFxMvft.dll; Windows file names are usually not case-sensitive.

The exact version, size, architecture, signature, and hash cannot safely be generalized. Old public file listings disagree, so a file that matches the name but came from an unrelated source is not necessarily the correct component.

First identify the application requesting the file

A missing-DLL message tells you what the loader could not find, but it does not always identify the program that owns the file. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency used by vifxmvft.dll is missing.

  1. Write down the complete error message.
  2. Record the application name shown in the title bar or message.
  3. Note whether the error appears when launching WinDVD, InterVideo DVD, an installer, or Windows startup.
  4. Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
  5. Select Startup apps and look for an old media, DVD, or InterVideo entry.
  6. Right-click a suspicious entry and choose Open file location.
  7. Inspect the folder containing the executable.

If the message names WinDVD, InterVideo DVD, or an old helper executable, repair that application first. If it appears during startup after the application was removed, the startup entry may be left over from a partial uninstall.

Check whether the DLL is already present

If you have a legitimate WinDVD installation folder:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Browse to the application’s own folder, commonly under C:Program Files or C:Program Files (x86).
  3. Search that folder for vifxmvft.dll.
  4. Right-click the file and select Properties.
  5. Check the General, Details, and Digital Signatures tabs when available.
  6. Right-click the file again, select Scan with Microsoft Defender, and review the result.

A copy inside the product’s installation directory is more meaningful than a copy found in a temporary folder or an unrelated Windows directory. The absence of a digital signature does not by itself prove malware, because this is a legacy component, but it means you should rely on the original installer and antivirus results rather than the filename alone.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall WinDVD or InterVideo DVD

This is the most likely solution when the error appears while launching the old DVD application or immediately after installation.

Uninstall the damaged installation

  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps on Windows 11. On Windows 10, select Apps & features.
  4. Search for WinDVD, InterVideo, or InterVideo DVD.
  5. Select the three-dot menu beside the program.
  6. Choose Uninstall and follow the wizard.
  7. Restart Windows.

If the program is not listed in Settings:

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Enter appwiz.cpl.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select the WinDVD or InterVideo entry.
  5. Choose Uninstall.

Do not manually delete random DLLs from the application directory before uninstalling. The installer may need its own files and registry entries to remove or repair the product correctly.

Reinstall from a trusted source

Use, in this order:

  • The original WinDVD installer
  • The DVD or recovery media supplied with the computer
  • The computer manufacturer’s recovery package for its bundled DVD software
  • A legitimate Corel account or official vendor download, if the product is registered there

If you downloaded an installer previously, make sure it is the installer for the same product edition. OEM versions of WinDVD may require the original manufacturer’s recovery media rather than a retail installer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After downloading or locating the installer:

  1. Right-click the installer.
  2. Select Properties and check whether Windows shows a security warning.
  3. Scan it with Microsoft Defender.
  4. Right-click it again and choose Run as administrator.
  5. Complete the installation.
  6. Restart Windows.
  7. Launch the application from its normal shortcut.

If the application opens without the error, the missing component was restored. If setup reports that a file failed to register, keep the installer log and the exact error text. Do not immediately copy the DLL into a system folder.

Check compatibility for an old installer

Some WinDVD installers predate Windows 10 and Windows 11. If setup will not start:

  1. Right-click the installer.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Compatibility tab.
  4. Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
  5. Choose an older Windows version only if the installer documentation or the original product requires it.
  6. Select Run this program as an administrator.
  7. Select Apply, then OK.
  8. Run the installer again.

Compatibility mode cannot make every obsolete application work on a modern system. If the installer still fails, use the original recovery media or replace the unsupported application with a current media player.

Fix 2: Check Microsoft Defender quarantine

Antivirus software may have removed a file that was already present. This is especially relevant if WinDVD worked previously and the error appeared after a security scan, update, or cleanup operation.

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Review recent detections.
  5. Open any detection related to the WinDVD installation.
  6. Check the original file path and detection details.
  7. Restore the file only if the path belongs to a trusted WinDVD installation and you can verify its source.

Microsoft warns that allowing a detected file can expose the device if the file is malicious. Do not disable antivirus protection globally, add a broad exclusion, or restore a file simply because its name matches the error.

If Defender detects the installer or the restored DLL again, stop the repair and scan the complete installer and application directory. Obtain a clean installer from the original vendor or computer manufacturer instead.

Fix 3: Repair the installation’s dependencies

A message saying that vifxmvft.dll could not be loaded does not prove that the DLL itself is absent. The loader may be unable to find another library required by the video-effect component.

First, rerun the WinDVD repair or reinstall using the correct installer. Avoid installing random runtime packages based only on the DLL name. There is no verified evidence that Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributables, DirectX, .NET, or a graphics driver directly installs vifxmvft.dll.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the application has a built-in repair option:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps and Installed apps.
  3. Find WinDVD or InterVideo DVD.
  4. Open its three-dot menu.
  5. Choose Modify, Change, or Repair if available.
  6. Complete the repair and restart Windows.

If no repair option exists, uninstall and reinstall from the original source.

Do not assume 32-bit or 64-bit from a website listing

Legacy WinDVD components may belong to a 32-bit application even when Windows itself is 64-bit. Public listings for this filename conflict about architecture and file size.

Use the architecture supplied by the exact application installer:

  • A 32-bit application normally installs under C:Program Files (x86).
  • A 64-bit application normally installs under C:Program Files.
  • Do not move a DLL between these folders merely to make an error disappear.
  • Do not copy a 32-bit file into C:WindowsSystem32.
  • Do not copy a 64-bit file into C:WindowsSysWOW64.

The names of those Windows folders are confusing: on 64-bit Windows, System32 is generally used for native 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system components. Neither directory is the correct general-purpose home for an application-specific WinDVD DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 4: Handle a registration error correctly

Some old WinDVD installers attempted to register multimedia components during setup. That does not mean every vifxmvft.dll copy should be registered manually.

regsvr32 works only with DLLs that expose the required registration entry point, such as DllRegisterServer. If this component does not expose it, manual registration will produce another error and will not repair the application.

Use this approach:

  1. Read the installer’s exact error message.
  2. Confirm that the installer, not Windows startup, reported a registration failure.
  3. Rerun the original installer as administrator.
  4. Check whether the installer provides a repair option.
  5. Confirm that the installer matches the application architecture.
  6. Review the installer log if one is provided.

Only use regsvr32 when the vendor’s instructions or the installer log specifically identifies this DLL as requiring registration. The general syntax is:

regsvr32 <DllName>

Do not run a guessed command against a copied DLL in System32 or SysWOW64. Registration is not a universal fix for missing runtime files.

Fix 5: Repair Windows system files

This is less likely to restore vifxmvft.dll, because the file is associated with third-party multimedia software rather than Windows. It can still help if Windows component corruption is preventing the WinDVD installer or related services from working.

Before running the commands:

  1. Install pending Windows updates.
  2. Restart the computer.
  3. Save your work and close applications.
  4. Open the Start menu and search for Command Prompt.
  5. Right-click Command Prompt.
  6. Select Run as administrator.
  7. Approve the User Account Control prompt.

Run DISM first:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

Wait for it to finish. Then run System File Checker:

sfc /scannow

Restart Windows after both commands complete. Retry the WinDVD repair or reinstall and check whether the original error is gone.

If DISM or SFC reports that it could not repair everything, restart and run the sequence again after installing updates. These commands repair Windows components; they are not a source for an InterVideo DLL.

If repeatedly hunting through Windows repair results is becoming the problem, Outbyte PC Repair can perform a free scan showing what it finds, while repairs are completed by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the WinDVD application remains the definitive fix for this application-specific file.

Fix 6: Update or reinstall related drivers

A graphics or audio driver can affect whether an old media application runs, but updating a driver will not normally install vifxmvft.dll.

Use Device Manager only when the error began after a driver change or when WinDVD crashes while opening video:

  1. Right-click the Start button.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Display adapters.
  4. Right-click the graphics adapter.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Repeat for relevant audio devices under Sound, video and game controllers.
  8. Restart Windows.

To reinstall a device driver:

  1. In Device Manager, right-click the affected device.
  2. Select Uninstall device.
  3. Confirm only if you have a replacement driver available through Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer.
  4. Restart Windows.
  5. Allow Windows to detect the device.
  6. Install the current driver from the computer or hardware manufacturer if needed.

If you are manually checking many device models and driver versions, Outbyte Driver Updater offers a free scan that identifies what it finds, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional and does not replace restoring the correct WinDVD installer when that is the source of the missing file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent system change

If the error appeared immediately after a driver installation, application removal, or major system change, System Restore may undo the change.

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Enter:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  5. Review the changes.
  6. Select Next, then Finish.
  7. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore normally rolls back system settings and installed programs without changing personal documents. It cannot restore an installer that no longer exists, so you may still need to reinstall WinDVD afterward.

What not to do

Do not download an isolated DLL

Random DLL download sites can provide malware, an altered file, the wrong architecture, or a version that does not match the application. Even a clean file may fail because another dependency is missing.

A loose copy also leaves the damaged WinDVD installation, registry entries, and installer components unrepaired. Use the original application installer, legitimate vendor account, OEM recovery media, or the computer manufacturer’s recovery package.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not copy it into Windows folders

Putting vifxmvft.dll in System32, SysWOW64, or another global directory can create version conflicts and does not guarantee that the calling application will find the correct dependency. Restore the file to the application’s own directory through its installer.

Do not blindly run regsvr32

A DLL is not automatically a COM or ActiveX component. Registration requires the appropriate exported function and the correct architecture. Let the original installer perform component registration.

Do not install unrelated runtime packages

There is no verified evidence that Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or a graphics driver directly supplies this particular file. Install those components only when the application’s own documentation or error identifies them as a requirement.

Do not disable antivirus broadly

Do not turn off protection or exclude an entire drive to force an old application to launch. Investigate the quarantine entry and verify the installer source first.

If the error remains

If reinstalling fails:

  1. Save the exact dialog text.
  2. Record the executable or application name.
  3. Check Event Viewer by right-clicking Start, selecting Event Viewer, and reviewing Windows Logs > Application.
  4. Look for an application error at the time of the failed launch.
  5. Review any WinDVD installation log.
  6. Run a complete Microsoft Defender scan.
  7. Check whether the installer is damaged or incompatible with the current Windows release.
  8. Remove leftover startup entries only after confirming which application created them.

If the program is obsolete and no legitimate installer or recovery media is available, uninstall it and use a supported media player. Do not keep replacing DLLs from unrelated sources in an attempt to preserve a damaged installation.

Frequently asked questions

Is vifxmvft.dll a Windows file?

No reliable evidence identifies it as a standard Windows component. References associate it with old InterVideo WinDVD and InterVideo DVD multimedia software.

Which program normally installs it?

The strongest association is with older WinDVD and InterVideo DVD packages, including OEM editions. Confirm the parent application from the actual error dialog and file path rather than assuming every error comes from WinDVD.

Can Microsoft Visual C++ fix it?

Not directly. Those redistributables may be required by some applications, but there is no verified evidence that they install vifxmvft.dll. Repair the application that requested the file.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I register the DLL?

Usually not. Use regsvr32 only when the original installer or vendor instructions specifically require registration and identify the correct file and architecture.

Is the file 32-bit or 64-bit?

The architecture is not authoritative from the available public listings, which conflict. Use the copy supplied by the exact WinDVD installer rather than choosing a file based on size or a website description.

What if the file exists but the error continues?

A dependency may be missing, the file may be corrupted, or the application may be loading from a different directory. Check the calling executable, repair the complete installation, and inspect antivirus history and application logs.

What is the safest source?

The original WinDVD installer, legitimate vendor account, OEM recovery media, or the computer manufacturer’s recovery package. Avoid isolated DLL downloads and copies taken from another Windows installation.
